Grand Canyon Distances.
The dimensions of the Grand canyon
have been the subject of much discus
sion ever since It was lirst explored. It
may therefore be of Interest to give
some tlgures taken from his new sur
vey. The average width from rim to
rim does not exceed ten miles through
out tho Kaibab, or widest section of
the canyon, and it frequently narrows
down two miles. The river docs not
occupy the middle of the gigantic
trough, but Hows at a distance varying
between one and three miles from the
south side. Parctically all of the
magnificently sculptured pinnacles
and mesas (the socalled temples) lies
north of the river and at distances of
from live to seven miles from the
viewpoints usually visited by tourists.
The depth of the Grand canyon In one
way has been overstated, In another
overstated. Measured from the south
rim the total depth is considerably
less than a mile. From the rim at
the Hrlght Angel hotel, where tho
altitude is (iOGG feet above sea-level, to
lhc hlghwater mark of the river at
the foot of the tourist rail, the drop
Is 4430 feet. The highest point on the
south rim at the Grand View hotol
is 7480 feet, above 1!00 feet above the
river.
From the north side, however, the
drop to the water-level averages con
siderably over a mile and in many
places even exceeds 0000 feet. It may
be stated that tho north rim Is from
1000 to 12000 feet higher than the south
thus producing that high, even skyline
so striking in all views obtainable by
the tourist. The figures here given
arc based on spirit-levels run in con
nection with the map work. They
are the first that have ever been run
to the bottom chasmand the high
standard of accuracy maintained
throughout will cause them to be con
sidered authoritative and final.

Notice to Improve Sidewalks.
"You are hereby notified that your
cldowalk requires improving and
must be so improved within five days
of the date of this notice, In accord
ance with the Ordinance of Logan
City."
The above Is a copy of the olllclal
notice sent by the street supervisor
of this city to those who should re
pair their sidewalks. Supervisor Sam
uel Holt states there is practically no
attention given by some to this notice.
To all such, wo wish to say that you
are not only creating additional
expense for yourselves, but Jeopardiz
ing tho interests of our city as a
whole. Some of our worthy citizens
have been asking for a free delivery
mall service but we will never secure
this until our sidewalks are put In
proper shape. We understand there
Is a government law that Is explicit
upon tills point. It should bo tho duty
of every citizen to repair their side
walks just as soon as the notice is
received. Furthermore It is unjust
for a part of the walks to be Improved
and tho other parts to remain un
touched. AVc trust that the supervisor
will bo exacting on this matter and
compel eacli and every one to icpalr
their walks In compliance with tho
,law.

A nd now It Is Russia's turn to bo
visited by earthquakes. Andijan a
city In the Caspian sea region lias
been destroyed. f000 people are re
ported to have been killed. The state
treasury containing live million rou
bles is In the ruins. The water has dis
appeared from the wells and a general
subsidence of the site of tho town Is
feared. Something seems to be out of
Joint with the old world this year. It
lias been a long time since there has
been such disaster fiom volcanos and
earthquakes as the world has witness
ed in tho last few months. The de
struction of St. Pierre Martinique was
the most peculiar and most awful of
its kind ever recorded In history. We
had hardly gotten over the Martlne
quc disaster, when news came of the
eruption of Mount, Santa Maria hi
Guatemaula and the destruction of
nearly all of the coffee glowing dls
t rlct of the country. Since then there
has been other disturbances in dif
ferent quarters and now comes lUissia
for her share of the trouble. No ono
knows where the merciless hand of
death may fall next. t

HOW DIAMONDS MAY EXPLODE.
Cases In Which Only Ordinary Decree
of Heat Is Necessary.
It lias long been known that dia
monds, cspoclntly tho class known as
"roso diamonds," aro likely to oxplodo
If subjected only to what would Beem a
very ordinary degreo of heat, such as
strong rays from tho sun, etc. It Is
now believed that tho explosions aro
tho result of tho rapid expansion of
certain volatile liquids Inclosed In cavi
ties near tho contcr or thoso precious
ctoncs. A great many diamonds, even
though cut,' mounted nnd worn as gems
of perfection, aro still In an unfinished
condition that Is, tho liquid drop from
which tho stono Is being formed has
not as yet deposited all of its "pure
crystals of carbon." These movablg
drops mny occasionally bo seen with
tho naked eye.
When this Is tho case, a strong ml
croscopo will give tho drop tho appear
unco of a bubblo in tho fluid of a
carpenter's level. It Ib nlso highly
probablo that besides tho liquid men
tioned thoso cavities may contain
gases under great tension. This being
iho caBo, ono may readily comprehend
how a very small amount of heat
would causo tho liquid and gas to ex
pand to such a degreo that tho dia
mond would glvo way with all tho
characteristics of a mlnlaturo explosion.
Concerning Names.
Apropos of tho eternal domestic
question, an English women relates
this experience: "I engaged a maid
named Pearl, nnd as I simply could
not ask a Pearl to till tho coal scuttlo
happy woman to havo ono to fill!
or to holystono the doorstep, I said:
'I would rather call you by sorao other
iiame. Havo you a second one?' 'Yes,'
lepllcd tho damsel, brightly, 'my sec
ond namo Is Opal.' So I Btuck to
rear). At ono tlmo I all but engaged a
maid named Hermlono, but upon
Bsklng her, 'Have you a black dross,
whlto caps nnd aprons?' sho replied,
acidly: 'Yes, 1 havo; but I'm not go
ing to wear 'cm. Ma didn't chrlston
mo 'Ermlono for to wear a livery.' "
"Tim" Sullivan Is Temperate.
"Tim" Sullllvan, who has como to
tho front so strongly In Now York city
politics of lato, has boon a saloon
keeper for many years, but It Is not of
record that unyono ever saw him take
a drink. In Albany at ono tlmo ho
was tuken seriously 111 and a physician
ordered him to tako a stimulant.
"Don't you think I can pull through
without whleky?' asked Tim "You
might," wan tho reply, "but you aro
bo frightfully run down that I don't
think you ought to risk It." Tim re
flected for a mlnutu and said: "I'll
tako tho chanco. D n if I'll tako a
drink." And ho didn't.
Hades Located Once More.
"Tickets," said tho conductor of a
north-hound excursion train out of
Kansas City to a man who had been
imbibing too freely a few nights ngo.
"Ain't got no ticket," said tho in
ebriate, half aroused from his slumber,
"Where aro you going?" asked tho
conductor as be shook him.
"Ooln' t' hell," was tho drowsy ro
ply. "All right," said tho conductor
cheerfully. "Wo'ro due thoro at 9:30
o'clock. Glvo mo sixty cents and get
off tho train when tho brakoman calls
Leavenworth." Newton (Kan.) Ro
