STUPENDOUS CROPS
For thox past six years, Lord &
Thomas, advertising agents of Chica
go, have annually mado a crop re
port, basedupon the stntlBtlcs and
data gained through a most oxten
slvo and carmul Investigation of con
ditions. Tno reports aro summarized
for October ll In summarizing tho
showing tho report says:
"Novor In Ihh history of agrlculturo

nent." Some of tho fncts given to
us by those who collect tho data for I
our crop report give the yield of dif
ferent crops so high thnt they seem
exaggerated.
It Is also commented upon ns an
unusual but most gratifying, fact in
the showing that the distribution of
farm products Is well balanced over
tho country. The only complaint
heard among the farmers is the scar
city of laborers. Such an Investiga
tion confirms the official goverffhient
report, ns well as those from other
sources. Tho year 1912 has never
been equalled In tho amount of food
produced in this country. There are
no dissenters In any part. It should
prove a factor In tho much discussed
high cost of living and without les
sening the propperlty of toe great
percentage oi our. people ongnged In
ngrlculture. It will give additional
courage to the commercial and indus
trial interests of the country, because
an nbundnnco of food products is tho
most potent ngency of general pros
perity. -
TAFT AT HIS BEST
Praise For the President In a Demo
cratic Newspaper.
It Is to bo regretted that every
American congressman and every
American voter who makes n con
gressman could not have heard the
speech made at the navnl banquet
In Now York recently by the presi
dent of the United States.
There was not a trace of politics
nor a suggestion of self Interest or
demagogy in the president's remarks.
Mr. Tnft was perfectly simple nnd
absolutely sincere. He was at his
best. His speech was an expression
of clear-cut, level-headed, red-blooded
Americanism which should appeal to
every citizen.
Tho president's plea for a larger
navy was powerful In its earnestness
nnd simplicity. It was based upon
tho policy of a national Insurance
against war nnd commercial disaster,
upon the necessities of the Panama
Canal, upon the safety of tho Mon
roe Doctrine and upon the preserva
tion of our dignity and wholesome re
spect among nations. .
'The president's appeal for the con
I tlnuntlon of the congressional policy
of two battleships a year was con
i vlnclng In Its common sense logic.
Tho hcnrtlest, most unanimous and
I most spontaneous applause of the
' evening was given by that great and
' remnrknbly representative audlenco
to this portion of tho prcsldent'8
' speech.
President Tnft never mnde a out-
tor nnd more effective public spesci.
It was nt onco reverent and prophntic
I In Its forecast of peace and nrbltra-
i tlon nnd resolute nnd nggresslre In
j Its demand for preparedness until
I the day of universal peace shall come.
ANOTHER WAR CLOUD
Another war cloud is said to be
looming in Europe, this ono in the
northwest, where Russia is reported
to bo planning the conquest of Swe
den and Norway In order to secure
n frontngo on the Atlantic. Thoro Is
no doubt tnnt Russia covets at least
tho northern pnrt of tho Scandinav
ian peninsula, but as Sweden and
Norway would be a unit In resisting
Russian agression it seems unlikely
that Russia will mako any move In
tha.t direction at tho present time,
Tho Scandinavian peoples havo a rec
ord for wnrllke qualities and as thero
aro about 8,000,000 of tuem thoy
would bo able to give an oxcellent
account of themselves even against
Russia.
m
BIGGER THAN TAFT
"Jack" Johnson, tho Sfcgro pugilist,
whose claim to notoriety Is based on
his skill and prowess In having wors
ted a white man, "is In bad" with
tho minions of tho law at Chicago,

fatuation for an unsophisticated white

ity of Johnson Is evidenced by his
estimate of himself. Ho sayB be "Is

LESS IDLENE8S
MORE ACCIDENTS
The monthly returns to tho Bureau
of Labor Statistics at Albany makes
an excellent showing of the condition
of the lnbor market. ReportB from
185 representative trade unions indi
cate such activity and demand for
workers in their lines of Industry
that tho mean monthly percentage
of members reported Idle for any
causo Is but 19.7 for the first half
of this year as compared with 24.8
for the corresponding period of last
year.
The number of strikes and of lock
outs reported for tho second quarter
of this year- is about the Bame ns
half as much time was lost. Tho
strikes of the waiters and of tho fur
riers in this city nccount for nlmost
one-half of the employees Involved
in all disputes during the period and
moro than half of tho tlmo lost.
The ono sad featuro of tho report
is tho list of accidents which during
the three months under review reach"

13,731 were in factories. This Is tho
largest number of accidentB rep'orted
