ship's company of thirty-six who sail
ed from San Francisco In tho 111 fat-
od oil tanker, llosecrans, only three
HaJ survive tho loss of the vessel yes
kTP torday on, the rocks of Peacock spit.
Fred Peters, quartermaster, Is the
only man ashore. He wag washed
up on tho beach Inst night six miles
from tho wreck, more dead than nllvo
His name Is the only thing rescuers
were able to get from Wm before he
relapsed Into unconsciousness. Two
moro survivors, names unknown are
aboard tho lightship which ildes far
t beyond the Columbia river bar.
They wcro taken from the rigging of
the lost ship by the life saving crew
from Point Adams, who dared death
for many hours to make the rescue.
Unable to make their way ashore,
the Hfo savers worked their disabled
boat out to tho lightship, whero res
cued and rcscuerB were safe when
the wireless message was received i
ftom tho tug which put to sea last
night to aid them. Tho lightship has
no wireless equipment and no fur
ther message has come from the tug
Onconta.
Lifeboat a Floating Coffin
Astern of tho lightship tho disab
led lifeboat road at midnight, a float
ing coffin for a fourth member of the
Rosecran's crew, who leaped from
the rigging to be picked up, but died
in the boat.
The gale which drove tho tanker
to her fate still howled over the bar
early today. There seemed little
chance that tho llfo savers could
mako their way ashoro before It fell.
Bodies from the wreck, Including that
of Captain Johnson, who followed
his ship to the end throughout her
disastrous career, have beon washed
ashore nt various points. Only that
of the master has been Identified.

Tho wreck lies a half mile off

Peters, who survived tho battering
