James Trclfall Gardner was born
(May 29th, 1863, at American Fork,
Utah County, Utah. His parents,
HJ James Gardner and Jane Trclfall,
HJ were of English descent coming from
Lancashire, England to America in
the year of 1855. His father was a
farmer of the sturdy kind and pos
sessed much executive ability. James
T., like his father, has filled many
positions of public trust. He was
elected to the office of city council
man in 1886; was again elected in

1895; served a third term in 1902 and
1903; a fourth term in 1905. Was
elected mayor in 1905. At the last
election he was again honored by the
people to fill the same position during
the years of 1908 and 1909.
He was not only favprcd political
ly, but the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints, of which he is a
member, honored him by selecting him
as counselor to Bishop C. G. Patter
son of the American Fork First Ward
in 1901. In 1903 Bishop Patterson
moved away and Mr. Gardner was
chosen, sustained and ordained bish
op of the ward, which position, he
holds at the present time.
In 1884 he married Ruth Green-

He is a good husband and a kind
father, and is loved and respected by
all who know him.

ery. All being the property of Mr.
C. M. Beck of American Fork. The
New Grant Hotel, Mrs. James H.
Pulley, proprietor, is one of the mod-
ern hotels of the state, having been
built at a cost of $22,000. It has
large rooms elegantly furnished and
is strictly first class throughout.
The Opera House of which Mr.
Beck is the manager, is one of the
best play houses in the state outside
of Salt Lake City It ha recenMy
been remodeled, and reseated with
up-to-date opera chairs, having a
seating capacity of 800 persons.
Mr. Beck is one of the best known
livery men in the state, having been
in business for the past fourteen
years. He personally conducts the
Beck Livery at the present time. He
is what is called a self made man.
By his hard work, energy and per- ..
severance he has achieved that
amount of success that places him
among the leading business men of
his city. He is a staunch worker for
the best interests of his town, and
one of the foremost promoters of
public improvements or enterprises
