THE STUDEBAKER 1909 MODEL CAR.
There is much interesting reading matter in "The First Word
about the New E. M. F. 30," the advance notice put out by Evcritt-Metzger-Flanders
Co., of Detroit, giving the specifications of their
new car, the entire output of which will be handled by the Studebaker
The new car which is a 30 horsepower machine is of the 4-cylin-
der, vertical, 4-cyclc type, the cylinders are cast in pairs with water
jacket integral. The water space between the cylinders ensures uni- "
form expansion and contraction. The valves which are all on one
side are mechanically operated and interchangeable. The cylinders
are four inch bore and four and one half inch stroke, the compression
it? moderate. The crank shaft which is drop forged from special
steel is off-set three-quarters of an inch from centre line of cylinders,
giving an increase of power and efficiency with a minimum of wear
on cylinder ways and pistons. There is a double system of igni
tion consisting firstly of magneto, and secondly quadruple coil, com
mutator and battery. The cooling is by thenno-syphon principle, belt
f driven, stamped steel fan mounted on engine, not attached to radiator.
fjp- The carburator is located on the driver's side of motor and is adjust
able from his seat. The clutch is of the improved expanding ring
type, leather faced and is contained in fly wheel. There are four
speeds, three forward and reverse. The drive is direct through uni
w vcrsal jointed propeller shaft to bevel gear on differential, the gears
Ia are extra large, accurately cut and made from special alloy steel.
. The rear axle, of the live, semi-floating E. M. F. exclusive design,
11 is fitted with truss rods, Hyatt roller bearings in hardened and ground
y lemovable sleeves, differential thrust bearings. The front axle is
I-beam type. 'Drop forged in one piece. The wheels are of the ar
tillery design and the tires are of the highest grade standard make.
Universal quick detachable rims, 32 by 3 1-2 inches on all wheels.
Front springs are semi-elliptic and the rear full elliptic. The driv
ing thrusts and braking strains taken by two radius rods and not
by spring. The -body is handsomely finished and is supplied as 5
passenger touring car, runabout, roadster or demi-tonneau. The
wheel base is 105 inches, the tread standard, the gasoline capacity
is fifteen gallons and the oil one gallon. The price of the car. fully
equipped, including magneto, is $1,400 f. o. b. Salt Lake City.
A 24-motor contest will be held at Brighton Beach in September
by a newly organized racing association of Xew York City.
