TAKIN A POLL. I
(Continued from Pago 11.) I
'Toll To rob, plunder, despoil. Associated with and perhaps I
suggested by or synonymous with pill." 1
Turnm' my binoculars about this horizon that looms up in the 1
distance 1 sees no indication of error in the dictionary's roundup. The I
poll is sure the broad end or butt of a rammer; it's sure an innocent I
nursery toy to remove the head of, lop off, clip, any politician that I
ain't been downright good, and it's sure the thing that robs, plunders I
and despoils; whether it's associated with pill or not, I don't know, M
but thcy's a mighty powerful lot of people that's swallcrin' pills these
days -and they don't wear the federal brand of purity, neither. I
I
I never do get satisfied about this poll stunt. Everybody's got I
theirs-: some of them more, good and plenty but I ain't, only in mild I
sense, like you'd hit a broncho over the head with a piece of corral I
fence pole, and then you'd put a prickly pear under his tail they's a I
difference, all right. One don't act, the other docs. I
It pesters me, this poll aggravation docs, until yesterday, when I
I'm the dock that a leeward tack brings into with a luff a mate that I I
think first is Percy. But he ain't. He's togged out like he'd 'just I
stepped down from the window and he spreads an odor thatputs Jim I
Ham Lewis' trail on the Wright machine. I
"Say," he says, as near as he can, "you don' wan' a pole, d' you?" I
Gee, that's a shock. Manna, same's Moses got. I
"You're the cherry I've been waitin' for these long, long days to B
pick; are you ripe?" says I. "I'm the original purchaser of polls at H
any price. I don't want no discount. I want you to put your price I
up. If you've got a poll that's worth an ant-eater's breakfast, I'll buy I
it. I don't care whether it's good for last election or any other old H
election. I'm for your poll. Name your price, Rudy." H
"Name ain' Rudy name's Bill. Bill Garlcr. Everybody says bes' H
barber on earth. Bill Garlcr, don' forget that. That's my name. Used H
run shop Wes' Sou' Four' Eas' Nor'. Got froze out. Got fines' pole H
in the worl' ; cost fi'ty six dollars, on'y needs paintin ; that's all. Got H
froze out; on'y needs paintin " H
