RECENT CONTROVERSY

recent discussion In Japan of the at

in regard to Japanese residents It op

b tho Japanese newspapers of the

After Sensational Scene
Arizona and New Mexico
Statehood Abandoned
Washington Fob 27There will bo
i
no statehood legislation for New Mex
I Ico and Arizona at tho present session
of congress At a meeting of tho com
r
mittee on territories today all mem
hers regardless of party In a sensa
tional scene abandoned consideration
of tho house bill
The members of the committee left
the room without any one suggesting
further meetings for its consideration
This remarkable action occurred at
the conclusion of tho reading of state
ments presented by Senators Nelson
and Bovorldgo charging corruption
Jury bribing and various other of
I fenses against certain officials and
leadrsl of what was termed the gang
I which Is In control of political affairs
jii New Mexico
Among the statements read was a
telegram from J J Hagerman former
governor of Now Mexico reflecting
upon tho character of tho people who
are in control of politics of the terri
tory and declaring that the men ex
pect to continue their control after
tho torritoy becomes a state He re
fers to them as freebooters and
said that 60 par cent of tho voters are
Mexicans and onehalf of that num
her are Illiterate and ignorant and
easily could be governed by the gang
to which ho referred Ho suggested
that It would bo well to wait until
after the next census before admitting
New Mexico to statehood Another
I statement was read counting the diffi
culties experienced by Ormsby Me
Harg who went to Now Mexico In
1907 as an agent of the department of
justice to prosecute land frauds This
statement declares that Mr McHars
was hampered in his work by Governor
Curry and his attorney general Judge
A B Fall
Among other confidential Informa
tion produced by rations senators
were a number of indictments relum
ed against the territorial officials and
there was read also a letter from W
F WIlcox a former newspaperman of
Santa Fe who asserts that his life was
threatened and that he believes the
threat would have been carried out
had ho not loft the territory
It is regarded as extremely likely
that the committee on territories will
decide to conduct an investigation in
New Mexico before action on an ad
mission bill Senator Bcvorldge today
introduced a resolution which author
izes the committee to conduct hear
ings If thought to be advisable
In some of tho communications laid
before the committee reference is
made to lie rough itfder Influence and
it Is declared that Governor Curry and
a number of others made several trips
to Washington to hao the agents of I
the department of justice called oft I
when they were investigating land
fraud cages
Miss Lawlor a stenographer who
assisted In tho land fraud cases made
a statement to the committee which
indicated that the lives of tho govern
ment agents were In danger as long as
Ithey persisted In their investigations
I She mentioned several people promi
nent In public affairs In New Mexico
I in a most uncomplimentary manner
and cited certain records which she
said would bear her out In all her
I statements At a former meeting of
the committee one of tho Democratic
senators proposed that all sections of
I the bill proposing to legalize land
i gants and bond Issues be stricken
i out This proposition met with ob 1
i jection and today It was said that II
there is not a single member of the
i committee who would vote to report I
1 the bill There was practically no dis
cussion of the bill at tho meeting
I today The time was wholly consumed
by the statements presented It was
recognized that whether the state
I ments were true or not questions had
been raised that could not be dis
posed of at the present session of con
gicss That being tho general view
tho members of the committee dis
persed and any meeting that Is hold
now will bo at tho call of Chairman
Beverldge No date was fixed for fur
ther meetings
I Attention was directed to the land
section of the statehood bill several
days ago when Senator Nelson pro
tested to several of his colleagues
against tine activity of the New Mexi
can statehood lobby In Washington
Ho was opposed particularly to the
work of Governor Curry who appear
ed on the floor of the senate In the
exercise of n prlvlleege had had as

ECONOMICAL CONDITIONS
CONSIDERABLY MUDDLED
Tokio Feb Economical condi
tions in Japan are considerably mud
died although tho prospects for the
future Is regarded as fairly good by
the best and most conservative Juries
A temporary setback has been met
with however in company affairs
Several largo companies in which the
public both foreign and Japanese
has invested largely ate managed In a
manner that Is careless to say the
least Tho directors of one concern
were forced to resign It is the cleans
ing of the augean stables that has be
gun and it will bring forth a more
healthy condition of things but at
present the discoveries are acting as
a depresant and while business gener
ally Is said to me much better thoro
Is marked cautiousness upon the stock
market and exchanges Japanese in
dustrial securities are not being
sought after but government securi
ties have steadily held their own and
they arc expected to improve Some
of the larger foreign firms are natu
rally feeling tho squeeze of Japanese
competition and arc turning their at
tention to the financial side of busi
ness with the Japanese
As a consequence It Is Intimated
that two largo banking firms will be
established In loklo one with Amer

English that this banking feature will
bo the main business conducted by
two firms that hitherto have confined
themselves to merchandise
