jj THE EVENING gTANPAKD. I JUDGE JOHNSON ESCAPES CENSURE Tho Republican state committee at a meeting at Republican titato head quarters in the Felt building In Salt Lako yesterday decided Lhat It did not have the power to review tho ac tion of tho Btnte convention in the nomination of Judge Jacob Johnson to congress. Tho committee had undor consldciition communicate ns declar ing that the nomination had been ob tained by fraud and that charges against Judge Johnson's personal character disqualified him from being an acceptable candidate for the clec Judgo Johnson appeared before tho committee prepared, ho declared, to disprove all tho charges brought against him. PcrsonB who bad known Judge Johnson for forty years were ready to state that tho cbargeB agalnat his character wore groundless. Thej c said the charges were moro than thir ty years old and that during the en tire time that they had known Judgo Johnson they had known of no grounds upon which to baso such accusation. They called attention to tho fact that 'ho had lived In the same community for tho last forty years and had been honored by the people of the com 'munlty with election to the district bench and had been given other posi tions of mist which ho had flllod ably and honorably. Furthermore, as evl 1 1 dence that tho friends and neighbors S4 i of Judge Johnson take no stock in vg , tho charges brought against him It ia 'ill , asserted that he will rocelve the sup- flj? . port of a large majority of tho people rffl , of his home county for congress, Jr- P1 respective of their political prefer- b ' cnoes. Sa Found Vindication. 39 The state committee yesterday Hnt "Sl " the following communication to those H who "wore requesting that an investl vM gation Into the charges against Judge $ Johnson be made by the committee: M 8alt Lake City, Oct. 1, 1912. 4 Gentlemen: Referring to your JI7(J I communications in regard to nom BM lnation of Judgo Johnson for con 's? greas, would say Judge Johnson S was regularly nomlnnted by the M J Hopubllcan convention. That IJJI : convention was the sole judge of 5B?i i the qualifications of Its candidates JyA and tho state committee has no Wfl j authority to roviow the action of H ! the Republican state convention. M (Signed.) HENRY GARDNER, M Chairman 15- Jndge Johnson last night docllned SJL to comniont on tho action of tho staio ! committee. He said that the action had evidently ended the controversy. "JU Joseph Belligerent. 9 Harry S Joseph, who was Judge 'M Johnson's loading opponent for the ) I congressional nomination, and who m charges that the nomination of John ny Bon was secured by fraud, said last 2K night that he had received no notlff LJ cation of a meeting of the Republican VT 'k committee and had been given no op i(! portunlty to present any evldenci to &K, the committee bearing on tho question He said that he had not made any II plans as to what action he would take P relative to the matter in this contln ar V gency as ho had been firmly convinced 5? B tliat the committee would grant him ? a hearing. However, he declared that M m he purposed getting the facts before & ft the public if it was necessary for him K to hire halls in every Pirt of the I S1 state. Ho said he would not let the V matter rest with tho action of the SiW: state committee. It Is possible that wdm- Mr. Joseph may attempt by court pro H ccduro to keep Mr. Johnson's name oil K the ballot. The foreign slt--ss uation was again responsible for the !j heaviness shown by today's early mar 3jj? kel.
