FIRST TRIP TO MALAD WILL BE
MADE TODAY
Regular Passenger Service Commences
on Monday Crew Selected For
the New Run
The first gasoline motor car for
passenger and express service in
Utah was tried out yesterday by A B
Stevenson superintendent of the Utah
division of the Oregon Short Line The
car was run from Salt Lake to Saltalr
and return The car camo to Ogden
this morning and will make a trial
trip over the line between Ogden and
Malad for the purpose of arranging
the regular schedule of service which
will be started next Monday
The cur was sent on a trial trip
to Malad this morning at 855 in
charge of Conductor F B McCuno
Engineer William Vance and Brake
man W A Jones Accompanying the
crew on the trout trip were General
Superintendent J M Davis Division
Superintendent A B Stevenson Su
perintendent of Motive Power J F
Dunn and Master Mechanic George

what is considered an experimental
trip the car took out the regular run
and will return from Mahwl and Brig
ham City this afternoon or evening
On the outside of tho car appears
tho number 480 and the words
Oregoh Short Line On the side ol
tho baggage compartment are the
words United States Mail Railway
Postoffice
The result of this experiment on the
Malad run will be watched with keen I
interest by operating officials of the
llarrlman system and if the service
is satisfactory there Is hardly a ques
tion of doubt but similar motor cars
will be put In service between Ogden
I and Salt Lako during the next thirty
or sixty days
The car was made by the McKocn
Motor Car company In Omaha and
came directly from tho shops under
its own poyor last week In charge
of George H Updegraff tho com

Tho exterior lines of the design of
the car are similar to an Inverted

The new car is seventytwo feet long
having three compartments for the

feature with tlicfco pars experiments
having shown that in addition to Tid
ing steadier the car of thin shape will
consume 10 por cent less fuel than a
square car On the trip taken yester
day it took one gallon of gabullne for
each to miles traveled although the
lighter cars travel 303 miles on one
gallon of fuel on level track Only
twelve feet of space Is nccebsarv for
the engine room which IB provided
with an auxiliary gasoline air com
pressor for the brakes and instead of
cranking tho engine there Is an
aiangpment whereby the compressed
air can bo used for tho first few rev

Side entrances arc provided at the
front of the passenger compartment
making the car easy of acccgn the

Principal Cross staled today that It
looked to him as though there would I
have to be some pretty lively work

the time designated II But said ho
I presume the contractors know I
what they arc talking about when they

of the building completed then to give

The contract calls for the comple

September but as a matter of ac
commodation to tho board of educa
