t
Copenhagen Sept 1Dr Cook the

telegram Just received at tho colonial
ofllce hero from Lorvik Norway
Dr Cook Is on board tho Danish
government steamer Hans Egedo
which passed Lervlk at noon today
route for Denmark
The telegram announcing Dr Cooks
achievemtn was sent by n Greenland
official on board the steamer and reads
as follows
We have on board tho American
traveler Dr Cook who reached the
North Polo April 21 1908 Dr Cook
arrived at Upcrnivik the northernmost
Danish settlement in Greenland on
an Island off the west coast In May
of 1909 from Capo York in the north
west part of Greenland on Baffin
Bay The Esqulmaux of Cape York
confirm Dr Cooks story of his Jour
ney I
For years Dr Cook has given his I
attention to Arctic explorations and
In 18912 was surgeon of tho Peary I
Arctic expedition and in 18979 sur
geon of the Belgian Antarctic expedi
tion He has received numerous dec
orations from the geographical so
cieties of Europe for his research and
writings in tho polar field
Dr Cook started on tho present ex
pedition in the summer of 1907 sail
lug from North Sydney C B on the
schooner John R Bradley with Cap
tain Moses Bradley as sailing master
The party was reinforced with
sledges dogs and Arctic equipment at
Etah Greenland whence thoy sailed I
March 3 1908 Dr Cooks plan was
to set aside all tradition by making
the dash to the pole during the winter
months when tho elements are con
sidered least advantageous for an ad
vanco northward Nothing JiadLJjeen
heard from Dr COOK tho last eighteen
months
It was Dr Cooks plan to make his
base of supplies or permanent camp
at Annatoak In Greenland about 20
miles north of Etah This would
place him about 1000 miles from tho
pole He first made his way west
ward out of the cache and across to j
Ellsmereland The Arctic club calc I
lates that ho reached this position In i
the spring of 1908 The last news re I
calved from him was dated March 17
190S when he was near Capt Thom
as Hubbard
He then reported that his health
was excellent that he had picked up I
a large party of Esquimaux of su
perior intelligence and that his pros
pects for success were bright He intended
I
tended to push on to the northern
point of Greenland and from there I
start his dash to the pole In the wIn
ter of 1908 He expected to return to
his quarters at Annatoak not later
than next month I
Dr Cook was born at Callcoon De
pot Sullivan county New York In j
1865 He was married in Brooklyn In
1902 to Miss Mary Hunt His wlfo has
shared belief of the Arctic club that I
her husband has achieved the goal of j
the North Pole

SHACKLETONS COMMENT

pleased to hear the news said Lieu

cently returned from an expedition I
that came very close to the South i

If the news Is correct continued
the lieutenant It Is a very remark
able achievement It must have been 1
a one man dash to tho polo as Dr

was between five and six hundred j

DOUBTS THE REPORT
Philadelphia Pa Sept LRcar
Admiral George W Melville U S N I
retired who conducted several expedi
tions into the Arctic regions was In
clined to discredit the report from
Copenhagen that the North Pole hod
I beon discovered by Dr Cook
I did net know that Dr Ccok had
an outfit available for that purpose
he said and I dont think that that
report can be true Dr Cook has been
wandering in those parts for some
time It Is Just possible that tho story
emanated from come Danish skipper
who has Just returned from tho
north
When asked what would be the
value of the discovery if the authen
t
ticity of the report was confirmed Ad
miral Melville said
I For one thing it would put an end
to the Arctic fad Tho only use to
I which the discovery could be put
would bo of a scientific nature

NO JOY RIDERS IN
NEW YORK STATE

Another law provides a fifty years
