t Action is the Watchword in the Market Place of the Munnimakers
Easy hi Teach Them
To Look or Your Ad i
By MR MUNNIMAKER
The Famous ProfitWizard of the Standard Classified Advertising
Columns
Now it is perfectly easy said Mr Munnimaker yesterday
for any business man to recognize in an instant whether his busi
ness belongs to the class that sells to the same customers every day
01 every week or every month or only cvery yenr01 whether the
business which may sell to a customer only once in a lifetime the
kind of business in fact where a man must really sit and wait until
the customer rejuhes the point where his services are needed
Now a good deal of the science of keeping customers interest
ed and getting new customers depends on a judicious adjustment of
the advertising according to how often the business can sell to the
same Customers The business man who sells to the same customer
every day has a comparatively easv problemhe can advertise either
In the display columns of the Standard
or the classified columns
But my point Is that for the busi
ness man who can not soil so fre
quently to the same customers there
Is Just one right way to keep himself
and his business and his way of doing
business before the minds of the peo
pie
Remember while he Is waiting for
icoplo to require his services he runs
the risk that when they do want
goods of his kind they may go to I
somebody else And his only safety I
Is to keep people so well reminded
that he Is waiting to servo them that
whether ho has to wait a week or a
month or a year or half a lifetime his
name and address will be the first that
hey think of when they do need any
services or goods of the kind that he
offers
Now the classified columns of tho
Standard the busy Market Place of
the Munnlmakers offers an especial
advantage for business men whose
I
customers come In at long Intervals

GREAT FORESTS BEING
DESTROYED BY WASTE
A very fen years ago forest con
servation wag little more than a
phrase today it is a vital Issuo In
our national development says
Treadwoll Cleveland Jr In a circular
on tho status of forestry In this coun
try which has just been Issued by the
United States forest service In con
nection with the general plan to con
serVo nil natural resources It Is the
most important and far reaching eco
nomic policy ever adopted and pur
sued by any nation
The forest is one of the chief sup
ports of tho whole material fabric of
our clvlllxjatlon The forost means not
only a permanent supply of wood and
the life of all the Industries which
depend upon it but also the control
of tho waters for human use There Is
only barrenness in the future of tho
nation which has lost the use of wood I
and the control of water
The sort of use that was made of
natural resources during the pioneer
Ing stage while right enough at tho
time Is far too wasteful to bo carried
on Into the new Industrial era In or
der to know how to use a thing how
ever It is necessary first to find out
how much of It there is to use and
taking stock of our forest resources
has led to startling results
It has shown that we are stll de
stroying the forest as we USe It that
we are taking from It every year
three and a half times as much wood
as Is added by the new growth It
has shown less than one third of the
growing trees felled by the lumberman
is ever used at all so that twothirds
of all the timber crt Is simply de
stroyed It has shown that oneelev
enth of all the forests are swept by
fires every ear and that on the aver
age since 1870 forest fires have yearly
cost 50000000 In timber and fifty
lives It has shown that more than 99
per cent of the forests in private
hands which comprise threefourths
of all the forest land and fourfifths of
all the wood is thus devastated by de
structive use and the scourge of un
checked fires while less than 1 per
cent Is properly handled for successive
crops or effectively protected from
fire The forest as a resource is rap
idly being obliterated
But the Inventory of the forests has

I had yet other ugly facts to reveal
With the disappearance and deterior

I tion Is losing control of the streams
which arc useful in our civilization in
I ways and degrees unparalleled by any
I other resource Pure water for domes
tic purposes Is of course indispens
able usable water at the right sea
I sons is the sole reliance of the great
projects by which the arid lauds aro

transportation is a matter of dollars
and cents to everY citizen trustworthy
power streams are the key to the age
of electricity at tho gales of which
modern industry is standing Yet
the guardian of the waters is steadily
I compelled to retreat before tho ax
and fire
I In waste alone we reject more than
I twothirds of the lumber that might
bo taken from tho standing trees At
I least half of this waste Is unnecessary
In the first place we waste the forest
I by refusing to take advantage of Its
full capacity for growth Protected
I and properly managed our forests
will produce far more wood than they
I do at present But while It is waste
ful to cripple the forest by a violent
I lumbering which destroys young
growth the promise of thc future for
est It is doubly wasteful to lock up
I the forest and let the ripe timber die
and decay for in the former case tho
forest at least contributes a temporary
I supply of wood whereas In the latter
case It contributes tb o wood at all
I It Is not use which destroys the
forests but waste Not use as such
I
but destructIve use combined with In
excusable neglect Is causing the for
