IN THE HANDBALL COURTS.
Champion Jones of Australia
Meets With a Signal
Defeat.
Several Other Interesting and
Closely Contested Games
Are Played.
The handball courts were crowded yes
terday, the cold weather having prevented
the crack players from going on a pleasure
trip to the country. There was a surprise
in store for the patrons of the San Fran
cisco court. Jones, the Australian cham
pion, had recovered from his mishap and
played against M. Dillon and George
Hutchinson, and the two latter won in
three straight games. Jones was not in
the best condition. Immediately after the
match he challenged the winners for a re
turn match for $50 a side, to take place
next Sunday, which was promptly ac
cepted.
The attraction at the Occidental court
was a match between T. F. Bonnet and T.
French and E. Maloney and J. Fennessev,
which was won by the two former by three
games to two.
An exciting game of rackets was played
between Nate Jacobs and John Purcell,
the former winning. On Wednesday night
M. J. Kilgallon and Richard Lenihan will
play T. F. Bonnet and Louis Kenny, and
Jotin Purcell and Al Collins will play Ed
Maloney and V. 0. Tobin, the whirlwind.
At the Union court the event of the day
was a match between P. T. Donnelly, the
amateur ciiampion, and It. Lonihan and
Al Pennoyer and J. Nelson. The former
team won. Another interesting game was
played between Frank and William Mc-
Manus with a tennis ball. Frank used his
hands and feet so effectively that his
brother quit before the conclusion of the
third game.
Following were the games played at the
different courts:
