NEW YORK, N. V., Dec. 10.— The excitement
in the Industrials is gradually subsiding, as to-day
the transactions in these specialties fell way below
he totals reported recently. Tobacco, which was
the most active stock, figured for only 85,200
shares ag&inst 202,000 yesterday.whlle Leather pre
iVrrcd, which was traded in to the extent, of 37,200
shares on Monday, shows up with but 32,700
shares to-day. At the ODening there was a drive
at Tobacco." which carried the stock down from
71 W<s<>3. reports having been current to the effect
that me company had sold $1,000,000 new stock
during the past year.
Another disturbing factor was the fresh cut In
the pr.ee of cigarettes by a Western competitor.
The slock issue rumor was officially denied, and
the price gradually worked back to 72*^ alid
closed at THi, the same as yesterday. Sugar was
sirong daring the ear:y sassion, rising to 1i,7, but
in the afternoon a selling movement of moder
ateiv large proportions carried the stock down to
105 V- Leather preferred was depressed early In
the day and dropped to 59 1 2. only to rise later on
to 625/3@615.8. The directors held another meet
ing to-uay. but it Is understood that the subject of
dividends was not discussed.
Leading stocks were a little more ac:ive at a
lower range. The gvueral list was favorably iu
lluenced by the reduction in sterliug exchange ana
the announcement that uo gold will be forwarded
to-morrow and also by the proposed distribution of
the regular dividends by the Manhattan and West
ern t nion companies. Manhattan, it is semi-ofH
cuilly stated, more tuan earned its dividend for the
quarter, while the Western Cmon statement to be
given out to-morrow will show a comfortable bal-
U c-- after meeting all charges.
Manhattan rose from 101 Vi to 103y 8 . and "West
ern Union from 87 : to 883<g. Subsequently there
was a reaction to 102 and 88 respectively. Tfce
railway list was dull throushoat, and at one time
showed gains of l@ls/g per cent. In the after
noon, however, wnvii Suiiar, Leather preferred and
Tobacco weakened, the improvement was lost.
Chicago Gas was tirm on the postponement of the
proceedings before; Attorney-General Hancock.
Very little attention was paid to the suit brought
before Judge Bischoft*. Tue stock ruled steady at
673/ 8 ;&.69Vi; closed 008-g.
In the inactive stocks i/onsoli<laied Gas of New
York bounded up from I^9^* to 15. r >Vs on rumors
of a deal with the outside companies. Illinois
tsteel fell 4 to 68 and Toledo and Ohio Central pre
ferred Bto 70@72. Speculation closed quiet and
irregular. Net changes show.declines of y to S A
per cent in the railway list and Vg^l^i per cent in |
the industrials.

Manhattan 34 and Consolidated Gas 4V2 percent.

CHICAGO MARKETS.
CHICAGO, Ir.i., Dec. 10.— The bull market in
wheat which showed such lively attributes yester.
day had suffered something In the way of modifi
cation this morning. Instead of clamorous buying
there was an undisguised disposition to sell, and
any one who was rasli enough to bid found all the
wheat necessary to satisfy his wants. Under these
conditions prices declined until they, met with re
sistance from holders of "puts." The weakness
was primarily due to Liverpool's failure to fully
reflect the strength ■of ; yesterday In American
markets. Of secondary Importance In causing
weakness the world's shipments of 71,850,000
bushels and large Northwestern receipts, 1239 cars,
were about equal. The Government report |to
issue in the afternoon tended to restrict trading.
The general belief was that it would neither afford
radical aid nor tend to depress prices very much.
Receipts at Chicago were 290 cars, and 138.340
bushels were taken from store. Export clearances
amounted to 236.734 bushels. The . elevator peo
ple were among the most liberal sellers to-day,
while one or two of the professionals were active in
the same direction. Bradstreet reponed a decrease
in the world's available supply of 237,000 bushels.
Liverpool cables were quiet. Continental markets
were unchanged to higher. May wheat opened
from 62Vi c to 625/gc, sold between 625 /8 c «nd
SI Is c closing at 82c, %@lc under yesterday. Es
timated receip.s for to-morrow 125 cars.
CORN— Business in corn <!id not materially vary
in volume or significance from that of recent days.
Occasions of moderate activity were seen, but tho
average was below an ordinary trade. As usual
prices were up or down in accord with those of
wheat. Re eeipts were 608 cars, and 149,316 bush
els were withdrawn from store. ' Liverpool cables
were firm. Export clearances amounted to 225,
--447 bushels. Hradstreet reponed an Increase in
available stocks of 196,000 bushels. May corn
opened at 29c, declined to and closed at SKM^C,
s, c under yesterday. Estimated receipts for to
morrow 300 cars.
OATS— Much the same state of affairs prevailed
in oats as in corn. They were dull, and what
changes were observed were due to the action of
wheat. Receipts were 33S cars, and 103,897
bushels were taken from store. Bradstreet gave a
decrease in stocks of 468.000 bushels. May oats
closed s/ 8 c under yesterday. Estimated receipts
for to-morrow 235 cars.
FLAX— Was firm. Cash sold 94@94yac: De
cember, 93c: May, 97»4@98c. Receipts were
42 cars.
PROVISIONS— The information from the stock
yards was not so depressing this morning, and
product participated in the better feeling. The
weakness of wheat was antagonistic to speculative
improvement, however, and beyond a steady tone
there was therefore no intrinsic benefit noted.
Later prices declined in sympathy with grain. May
pork closed 7y 2 c lower, and May lard and May
ribs each 2V3C lower.
Closing: I'liccs.

BUTTER— The supply of butter was very light
to-day, aud trade in consequence was quiet. Prices
were advanced, and the feeling firm. Creameries—

ciently large to absorb the small run, and prices

COAL—A local broker says: "Values are a little
easier, as Coal freights are quoted lower Jot future
deliveries. This Is attributable to the short crops
in the Colonies forcing grain carriers in this direc
tion, and a number of wheat charters from here in
clude options on Coul back. We have 35,000 tons
fully due here to arrive within the coming 30 days
and about 50.000 tons additional engaged to follow.
Some of our largest consumers are holding oack
their purchases, anticipating lower figures for 1896
consumption; they may regret their delay If the ex
pected labor troubles should culminate, which
some of the Colonial journals seem to think more
than probable. The Swansea Anthracite •is the
most formidable competitor the Australian product
now has in th« market. It is favored by our cus
