ELY, Nev., Jan. 5. — Edward Barrett,
a machinist's helper, was ground to
fragments in the new Huntington mill
of the sixth section of the Steptoe val
ley smelter at McGill yesteVda>\ E. P.
Fitzgerald, foreman, of* the section,
escaped with severe cuts : about; the
head and his body was badly bruised.
As near as can be learned Barrett and
Fitzgerald had ' thrown off the power
from- the mill and entered it to. make
some repairs when in some manner the
power clutch slipped and -in a second
the mill waSi in: motion. Fitzgerald
started to clamber for the. top., know
ing- that' outside assistance was not
to be had: He succeeded In reaching
safety after being badly battered. Bar
rett: had no chance whatever.vtho,ma
chinery catching him and dragging him
relentlessly to a terrible death.
