OLD TIME CROWD WILL
WITNESS BIG BATTLE
Ketchel and Johnson, Trained to the Hour,
Ready to Step Into the Ring
WILLIAM J. SLATTERY
Johnson and Ketchel were both on edge yesterday. . After three weeks
of careful preparation each man looked to be ready for a contest of the most
strenuous order on Saturday afternoon. Whatever worry either man may
have on his his mind he is keeping to himself. Each has the same old smile
of confidence, though, strange to say, neither says much about the other. The
preliminary arrangements for the mill were never marked by the ordinary
mud slinging duels which generally are in vogue when a pair of the stars of
the ring are being groomed for combat. Ketchel and Johnson have minded
their own business throughout and for this the fans are thankful.-
That a wonderfully large crowd will be at the ringside when --the two
champions clash goes without saying. Promoter Coffroth has made more
reservations for this fight than for any others he .ever: handled/ barring the
two greatest that the city has ever* ■ — — '■ — ; =-; — — — ; — -— ■♦
known — the Brltt-Nelson mill at Colma
in 1905 and the Corbett-Jeffries affair
at Mechanics' pavilion in 1903.
From every section of the state and
from many other states orders are com
ing in daily for blocks of seats. Indi
cations are that the fight will pull
something like $25,000, or possibly
more. No other onesided betting fight
in the past, barring the first Gans-Nel
son bout, ever managed to work up so
much interest as has this one..
Neither fighter did much work yes
terday. Johnson laid off entirely. He
junused himself as usual by .tearing
around the beach roads in his auto,
and made two trips downtown to talk
business with Jim Coffroth. The pair
went into more details regarding the
European rights of the moving pic
tures, but nothing definite was de
cided upon. w-
KETCHEL HAS DUSY DAY
Ketchel went on the road In the
morning and in the afternoon ha
worked around his gymnasium. He
put in a fairly busy day, but did no
boxing. As his hands are In excel
lent shape, the middle weight cham- [
pion does not care about taking any
chances with them at the eleventh
hour. Anyhow, he has done about. as
much boxing as he needs.
Both men will pose for the benefit
of Miles brothers and their moving
picture machines this afternoon. They
will each do a little boxing with their
sparring partners, but it will not be
of tjie slambang order. Tomorrow,
they will lay off altogether and also
lounge around Saturday morning until
it is time for them to report at tho
Mission fetreet arena,
Johnson's seconds will be George
Little*, Barney Furey, Dave Mills and.
Bob Armstrong. In Ketchel's corner
will be his manager. Willis Britt, John
ny Loftus, Charley Miller and Steve
O'Connor. The ; men have been in
structed to' be on the job at 2 "o'clock. I
This will give them plenty of time to i
get ready and will guard against any
possible delay. «
The first preliminary will start at
1:30 o'clock and will be furnished by
Frankie Smith and Jeff Perry. It is
scheduled to go 10 rounds. Each man
has- a victory over the other. This
will be followed by another 10 round
affair, in which Antone LaGrave and
Sam Nelson will start. As In the other
fight, both of these boys have one
win and one lose over the. other.
BETTING REMAINS SAME
The betting remains at 10 to 4 in
Johnson's favor, with even money on
15 rounds. In fact, it has not changed
for the last two weeks. \V. A. Trem
blay, a sporting man from Miles City,
Mont.. arriA'ed at the St. Francis yes
terday and flashed a big roll of bills
which he wants to bet that Ketchel
will stay 15 rounds. He is an old
admirer of the Michigan Lion.
Willis Britt assumes an air as con
fident as the manager of any fighter
that ever put on a glove. If Britt had
time to go around town and spend 10
minutes talking with every fight fan.

WINS TITLE BUT IVO BELT :
[Special Dispatch io y The Call] : - .■ • j
LOS ANGELES. -Oct. 13. — Although
Danny Webster, by virtue of the ma-t
Jority decisions of the sporting writers
of the three Los Angeies papers is con
ceded to have gained the world s ban-*
tarn weight championship, he is placed
in. the anomalous position of; a 1 cham
pion who has won tlie title, and. yet
failed gain the belt which was offered
to the winner. „-..* :
By the agreement of the fighters the
championship was decided by the thrat
morning paper's and the belt by the five,
papers. Two papers gave Webster,
the verdict, one gave Attell the de
cision and two others gave it a draw k
This leaves the belt- decision a draw.
Therefore, the men will be forced to
fight again for possession of the hand
some gold and diamond trophy offered
by Promoter McCarey ..and now h^ld
by the club until one or three other
clinches a definite claim to •'it.
Attell and Webster have practically
agreed to a return -match. That is,
Danny is willing and eager and Monte
has said he will consider it. However,
as this Is Monte's opportunity to re
gain his lost laurels, he probably will
think it over and decide quickly that
he will be glad to go on." -
