WHOLE MARKET £■££
IS IRREOUL.AR
% KEW YOEK, Oct. 18.— The frequent
fluctuations in the prices of stocks today
gave the market an appearance of great
irregularity and feverishneis. The high
opening prices and the inflow of outtids
buying orders which ' accompanied them
afforded an inviting opportunity to sell
stocks, and this - was . taken advantage of.
During the remainder of the day the mar
ket underwent many vicissitudes. The
conspicuous place taken by the stocks as
sociated with the name of Hawley and the
comparative irresponsiveness of the general
list to these movements was one ground
of suspicion which caused free selling of
the general list. The consummation of the
Missouri, Kansas and Texas deal last week
was the ostensible ground for the concen
trated movement in the Hawley group, and
the attention it attracted was emphasized
by the supposition that operations in the
Interborough Metropolitan stocks were from
the same source. The professional element
deduced an inference from certain opera
tions in the loan crowd, in which United
States steel figured as collateral; that there
had been concealed liquidation groins on in
that security, which it wu feared might
come from informed inside sources. Hence
the free selling of that stock which fol
lowed and which caused a decline of almost
3 points. This movement carried with it
Union Pacific, Beading, St. Paul and all
the stocks which have been most affected
in sympathy with the prolonged rise in
United States - steel. »
The securities connected with the cop
per industry wsre a . strong factor in the
early market. This strength was accompa
nied by a rise in the price of the metal in
London and by a rumor from Paris of the
projected formation Of a syndicate of Amer
ican copper interests which would exercise
a closer control-: of . the production' and
prices of that metal. A later reaction ■in
the London copper market and reports from
the domestic trade of declining consump
tive demands in face of the record rate of
production left those 'securities vulnerable
to the reactionary tendency of the whole
market.
The tone of the money market was easier
following the strong bank statement of
Saturday. Money loaned on call at below
4 per cent for the first time in two weeks.
Foreign exchange rates were strong.
Considering the wide price fluctuations
during the day final changes in stocks were
surprisingly small.
Bends were irregular. Total sales (par
value) $3. 513, C00. United State* bonds
were unchanged on call.

THE COPPER STOCKS
BOSTON. Oct. IS.— The Boston copper shares
market can be called (stronger, although ■ trading
does not show any great activity,- except in
t-I*>ts. The strength in Amalgamated has'im
proved pentiraent somewhat • and no doubt is
responsible/for the strength generally in- the
coppers. Butte Coalition has extended Its ad
vance to 26*4. a gain 'of 5-16. North Butte got
as high as 60% and has since reacted to 60.
Old Dominion at 52 was stronger. Bange is up
% a point. Mohawk has been the exception and
Is a . point lower. Superior copper was taken
in hand after: the first hour and advanced -to
60%, a gain of 1%. This has been very quiet
for some time past. In the industrial list United
States oil has been the feature of activity and
strength and at 38% shows a gain of • 1 point.
Nominal transactions have taken place in Amer
can telephone' and'telegraph and United States
machinery without change In • prices.
