ers, candy merchant and restaurant
keeper at Nosales. Ariz., was convicted
in the United States district court sit
ting at Tombstone, Ariz., on charge of
importing alien women across the Mex
ican border at Nogales for immoral
purposes. A motion for a new trial
was denied and Rogers was sentenced
to one year in the territorial prison
and to pay a line of $500 by Judge
Fletcher M. Doan.
PEARY IN LONDON
TO RECEIVE MEDAL
LOXDOX. May 2. — Commander Rob
ert E. Peary came here today to re
ceive the {?o]d medal from the Royal
ideographical society and to deliver his
lecture on his trip to the north pole.
He will receive the medal Wednesday
and expects to be in Europe several
weeks.

PITTSBURG. May 2.— Dr. James L.
Orris may die as a result of injuries
received tonight when an automobile
in which he and four others were riding
was thrown over a 125 foot embank
ment while racing with Honus Wag
ner's car.
The others, all friends of the ball
player, were less seriously hurt. Wag
ner took them, to a hospital in his
machine.
Two hours later an automobile
crashed into a huge boiler left in the
street, and one man. Maurice Bredin of
Franklin, Pa., was instantly killed,
while two men and two women were
seriously hurt.
ACCUSED OF BATTEBY— The hearing of C.
Comisky and George Nicolades on a charge of
battery brought by Pedro Tesfilo, a water
tender on the United States army transport
Sheridan, was heard before United States Com
missioner E. H. Heacock yesterday morning.
Th.c defendants both belong In the engine room
of tbe Sheridan and claim that they struck
Tesfilo to maintain discipline. The commis
sioner intimated he would dismiss the de
fondants. \

KANSAS CITY, May 2. — Following
the cessation today of the rains that
began Sunday night and wh,Pch • were
general over the southwest, a decided
drop in temperature . was experienced
tonight. Late tonight the temperature
at Topeka was only a few degrees
above freezing. Horticulturists believe
that should there be a freeze tonight
great damage would result to crops.-
At Salina, in the center of the state,
the "rain has been succeeded by sleet
and for a time snow fell. ' »'

lost: in the storms that swept portions
of the;state last night. v John Huffman,
a farmer near Burrtown. was the vic
tim. . His wife was seriously injured.

LOS. ANGELES, May 2.— Percy Van
Dyke, a visitor from New York, entered
a motion , picture theater yesterday,
pushed. his way, along a row of seats
occupied -mostly by women, sat down
and instantly leaped into the air, yell
ing. .
He had sat -down on a phalanx of
long, sharp hat "pins. .His body shot
into the darkness and he landed in the
lap of a woman in front. This woman's
escort immediately- leaped upon Van
Dyke and there were signs of panic
in the twilight of the house when the
police were called. ,
Van Dyke was found to be seriously
injured and he was taken to the re
ceiving hospital, where the surgeons
said he would recover.

phant here today Samuel Montgomery, an ani
mal trainer, was trampled by the beast and
perhaps fatally hurt. William Erans took
refuge on the top of a wagon, but fell froo
it and was killed.
