STOCK TRAPERS
SELL MARKET
i* NEW YORK, Nov. 16.— The. J*
most effective interest in todays ,;
movement of stock prices was the ■■«,
early absence of the aggressive..,;
operations for the advance by a < p
few brokers, which were the fea- J,
tures of yesterday's market. Th^ >
traders watched for the appear- «,
ance of these orders ln United J
States steel. Union Paciflc and r
Reading. They sold those stocks j,
and the soneral list because the ,
orders failed to appear. This was ,
taken to Indicate the abandon- j,
ment of the attempt to inau&u- ,
rate a new market movement by (
concentrating dealings in those J
stocks. The reappearance of the ,
same kind of buying- in United i
States steel and Union Pacific in S
the final hour pulled prices up
again and left them higher than
last night. , '• ' '!
The general decline in prices 01
meat all over the country came in \
for a great deal of attention.
The latest rapid decline has come .
sub«^o|irent to the November 1
condition shown by Bradstreefs ,
index number of commodity /
prices. Th« fall from the record \
level of January 1 of this year
amounts to 3.8 per cent, with the
decline evidently In progress In
increased degree since November
I. Great satisfaction is felt with
this tendency.
One immediate effect Is an in- ■
creased pressure on the banks in ;,
some sections of the west. The
explanation is that the fall in
grain prices has prompted farm
ers to withhold their offerings and
to buy livestock to feed corn to.
With the end of the feeding pc- >
riod there is foreseen a large in- ,
flux of offerings in the cattle ■
markets, a further decline in
meat prices and a heavy liquida- .;
tion of bank loans.
Bonds were easy. Total sales
(par value) $1,590,000.
United States bonds were un-|
changed on call. /
NEW TORK. Nov. 16.— E. F.
Hutton & Co.'s wire says: The
Stock market today continued to \
be under the influence of banking |
manipulation. In the early oper
ations there was some pressure
On the market leaders, which last- i 1i 1
ed toward the late afternoon, <
when a sharp buying movement j
occurred, taking stocks to the ,
nigh point of the day. There was
practically no news during the ;
session that would cast any light .
on the day's market movement. \
However, It might be said that in >
view of a coming speech by
Chairman Knapp of the commerce
commission here in New York |
November 22, in which it is said <
he will advocate the raising of
railway rates and also give as- /
Burance to bankers of a quick \
solution of these matters, that the
stock market will receive a sharp ,
upturn in advance of this favor- ■
able factor. . /

• The net profits of thfi.Belraont mine for Octo
ber were % 102,000. This compares with, about
$155,000 for September, and the decrease, in the
profits may partly account for the recent de
cline in the price of the stock. • The Relmont
management, however, - explains^ the decreased
profits, by the fact- that during October a large
quantity of low grade ore had to be cleaned up,
and the working of this ore caused lower values
for the output. ■ - - . . ,

OIL STOCKS
The oil stocks continued very quiet yesterday,
and the only change of note was a decline in
S. W. & B. to 30c.
The Midway Oil Courier of November It Kays:
"Two big gushers only 250 feet apart is a sight.
that may be seen near the western end of the
Midway "field. 1
"On section 5-31-23 the Midway-Premier oil
company pushed the drill into the pay grease
yesterday morning at 11 o'clock, and a ■ huge
volume of oil shot Into . the air high over • the
crown block. On the same section the Midway !
Five oil company has a big spouter. Both, wells i
sanded after flowing a short time. The Premier
sanded over 1.600 feet.- completely shutting off
the flow of oil. The well was brought In at a j
depth -of about 2,400 feet.
"The Rock oil company, operating in section |
23-31-22, Vitiway, brought in a good "• producer :
the last wpek at a depth of between- 2,300 and
2,400. feet in well No. 2. The gusher bridged
after a spectacular performance of several hours'
duration, and will remain (juiet- until the com«
pany Is ready to take care of the oil. No. 2 iar ;
expected to come in within the next few days. :
"The California Midway, which was brought;
In somet ime ago, has been shut ln and will 'be
opened today. The well is expected' to start off;
at a good rate. The 12} i inch casing was car- i
ried down I.SOO feet, and the well was finished
with the eight inch casing. This .is probably
the longest . string of 12^ Inch casing in the
Midway field." ' •■
The Coallnga Oil Record of November 11 says:
"\V. T. Ciishing, general superintendent of the
Producers' transportation company, was in 'Coal
inga last night and gave notice to the Producers"'
agency that the transportation company was
ready to receive oil from the Ooalinga field. '
"Secretary Dallas of the Coallnga branch of
the agency had- the tanks- turned on this morn
ing.' and notified the Producers' transportation
company that 50.000 barrels had been turned
into the lines.- It will take probably four days
for this 50.000 barrels to be run. but it will
force all of the cold oil through the pipe, and
from that time on as. high as 20,000 barrels per
day can be run during the cold weather.
"This* 50.000 barrels is only the oil which Is
now turned on,' and does not mean that it is all
which will be run for some time, as all of the
Coulinga oil will be run as fast as possible
through the Producers' line. It Is understood
that the Producers' line will take all of the
Coalinga production, running from 15.000 .to
20.000 barrels per day, and all of the Midway
oil will henceforth be run through the Associated
line tp Port Costa. The intention probably is to
run a part of the Kern Rlvejf oil Into storage,
of the Associated and draw upon it at a later
date, when the oil situation \becomcs a: little
better and the facilities for bandllng.it are en
larged. „ -
"The oil which is' being run today Is practi
cally the first run out of the Coalinga field for
nearly two months, with the exception of the
oil run under special contract. All. of the sumps
and tanks in the field belonging to agency com
panies hare been filled, and the superintendents
were disappointed dally by not being able to run
their oil."

'). CHICAGO BOARD OF TRADE
Fnture Grain and Provisions
CHICAGO, Nov. 16.— Refreshing rains in Ar
gentina today ended anxiety regarding the safety
of the wheat . crop in that country and gave a
sharp backset to prices here. The close was
weak at a loss of %c. All the other leading
staples, too, suffered a decline, corn finishing
14c to %c down, oats off %c to.%c and pro
visions ioiver by 5@7%c to 40c.
The finish In wheat was at almost the low
point of the day and followed a strong and
higher opening. Early cables told of dry hot
weather in Argentina at the most critical period
of the crop. Accordingly, shorts covered ln
rather a free manner and longs took profits on
the swell. Pressure from short sellers and
owners as well was already weakening the mar
ket when news arrived telling of the breaking
of the threatened drought. A 'further bearing
influence , was the. total- absence of export busi
ness. Cash wheat here, moreover, was a dead
load and Minneapolis reported the flour business'
flat. The May option, which had ranged during
the day from 06 He 'to OSc. closed weak at 96%
@96% c, a net loss of %c.
The corn market dropped with wheat. May
fluctuated between 47% c and 48?sc, closing easy
at 47% c. a decline of %c.to Xc from the figures
current 24 hours previous. Cash corn was firm.
No. 2 yellow closed at 51 ! !i(a52%c.
. Oats prices followed wheat and corn. May
touched as extremes 3414 c and S4%c. with the
last sales %c to i/4c off at 34H@34%c.
Buyers of . were backward. The
end of the session left' pork 12% c less ♦costly,
lard off 12% c to 20c. and ribs down 5@7%c
to 40c. . ■ ■■ * *

"Hay still continue* to move to San Francisco
in large quantities, this week's arrtTats amount

last week. Practically all of this Is grain hay.
But -»cry little alfalfa Is moTlng to market now
as the fields are cleaned up and th« quantitr

"The most Interesting feature of the week is
the report of stocks of hay on hand In the coun

hand aTallable for the San Francisco market
Last year's report totaled 233.370 tons.- which at
that time was the larzest amount ever reported
on hand. "With these enormous stocks on hand at

is Tery light and there Is nothing to Indicate
