SUNSHINE DISPELS
EMERYVILLE GLOOM
Two Favorites Celebrate Letup
in Rain by Leading'
Fields Home- .
JOE MURPHY
For the first time in many aha** a
bright sky and sunshine' greeted the
crowd at Emeryville yesterday. It was
•welcomed, as the dreary weather and
the adverse legislation "which is soon
to take effect had cast a gloom'over
the Emeryville racecourse.
An Interesting card was offered to
the patrons of the sport." Three events
were over a distance of ground, while
the other races were sprints. -Two fa
vorites were returned winners —Sldon,
George XV. Berry's two year old, and
Ayame being the successful choices.
Tha defeat of the favorite Fort John-I
*on in the third event at a rail* and j
twenty yards was one of the hardest j
blows the players, had sustained in j
many a day. For some unknown reason |
Mackenzie's entry was played as if
the race wereb in. .Fort. Johnson's I
price waa hammered down from evens i
to 1 to" 2. while Rosevale, which "ad j
only been beaten hy the scantest n» r
gin by the favorite in their previous
meeting, received from 3 to 5 to 16
Ito 5. Raleigh was 9 to 2 and 60 to 1
tould be had against Eddie Graney.
- As usual Rosevale made • the pace
until the -stretch when Fort .-Johnson
drew up on• even terms.'.-.. When they.
straightened for home the favrJHte and
ttosevale engaged in a bumping match'
which -lasted nearl yhalf way down the
retch. Passing the paddock Fort
Johns. seemed to tire and Rosevale
fame on and won handily. Mclntyre
gave Raleigh a Joke ride, but he man
aged to get third place.
Early O. "Wright furnished the wia

The final event Of the day at six |

to the front early and never left the

that could keep up close was "Uncle*
