Surprise was general among- local
brokerage houses yesterday at the
news from Lk>s Angeles teUing of the
;nsion of Fielding J. Stilson from
the stock exchange of that city. Sill
son had been a large operator In po
troleum and in real estate.' It was
generally believed that he had very
substantial backing. Manager Parson
of the southern exchange Is said to
have expressed an opinion that Stil
son's firm has real estate and other
holdings which will enable him to pay
off all obligations. i
A press report from Los Angeles
brings the following:
It is said the Fielding .1. Stllson
company owes probably $20,000 In
unsecured obligations. Among its
holdings is a large.equity in 150
Angeleno Heights lots, worth from
$2,000 to $5,000 each.
Following the suspension from
membership all of Stilson's "buyer's
contracts" in the hands of the stock
exchange clearing house were sold
to the highest bidder. The con
tracts amount to agreements to pay
loans secured by stocks which are
df «x»«lted in the clearing house
■xr\u) the contract. About $6,000 j
■vtv-s Involved in these obligations,
and for the most part no loss to. the
creditor resulted.
Included in the list were 50,000
shares of Oleum oil stock. The
last sale of this stock was at 3
cents a share. The SO.OOO shares
were bid in by the holders of the
loans at $1 a thousand, there being
no outside bidders.

strength. Metal and kindred se
curities Bold at best prices in some
months, while some attained-their,
highest quotations in more than a
year. ■
Last week's spectacular-rise In
American Smelting was continued,
the common shares rising above
R9 on enormous dealings. 7 Th»»
eagerness with which this stock
was taken offered additional proof
of the existence of an enormous
support.
Industrials, notably American Can
common and maintained r
their prominence of last week at'
higher levels and as a whole 'com
prised a large percentage of
the day's business, the standard
railway shares being comparative
ly dull until the, latter part of the
session, when Heading rose to its'
best price of the year. United
States Steel shared this distinc
tion.
The niarket made its first pro
nounced halt in the last hour.
Final dealings were <>n a moder
ate scale with the tone barely
steady.
Sixty and ninety day money rates
were advanced here today, chief
ly as a result of last week's
further decreases in reserves and
continued borrowing by Germany.
Increased firmness was shown
In comipercial paper. For the first
two days of the bank week local
institutions already have lost al
most 12,000,000.
Bonds were in better demand
here today, prices in general re
flecting greater firmness. Total
sales ipar value 1, $3,226,000.
United States government bonds
were unchanged on call.
NEW YORK. March 25.—X. V.

technical position was still quite
strong. United States Steel led
the little reaction and it was the
opinion of many conservative ob

stronger the general market was
not unlikely to react. The street

Steel's leadership that it mistrusts
