SYNOPSIS OF WEATHER CONDITIONS
The pressure has rlseu slowly over nearly all
of the Pacific coast. A moderate depression
over Arizona has resulted in rain or snow in
Utah and northern Arizona. There has also been
snow in Wyoming and light rain in Montana and
the Dakotas. A moderate depression is passing
over the Mississippi valley and has caused rain
in lowa. Missouri, Illinois and Ohio. A thunder
storm ts reported at St. Louis. The weather is
cloudy from New York to Boston with southerly
wind and conditions favoring rain.
The temperature has risen 22 degrees in Penn
sylvania. 14 degrees In Ohio and 12 degrees in
Kentucky. Otherwise there hare been no Im
portant changes.
On tbe Pacific coast there baa been a sharp
fall In temperature over Nevada and southern
California and a gradual rise in the San Fran
cisco bay section and Sacramento valley.

San Francisco and vicinity—Fair Thursday;
moderately warm; light north wind.
Santa Clara valley—Fair Thursday; some

SHIPPING NEWS OF COAST
[Special Dispatch io The Call]
EUREKA. Oct. ft.—Tbe present year promises
to break ail records for foreign shipments* from
this port direct to Australia. Sixteen cargoes,
comprising a total of 25,000.000 feet of lumber,
have already been shipped to Australia this
year, and tbe amount will be doubled before
the year closes. Seven additional foreign car
goes are already in sight.
The British steamer Lonsdale cleared for
Salina Cms, Mex.. thle afternoon with 21,««3
ties, valued at «5,318. The Lonsdale will de
part tomorrow or the following day. It is
expected that the schooner A. F. Coatea will
clear tomorrow morning with ties for Hilo. H. I.
With the hull of tbe new steamer Necanicum
in tow, tbe steamer Ravallu, lumber laden, de
parted this morning for San Francisco. At San
Francisco tbe engine and boilers will be placed
In the Necanicum and tbe steamer placed in
the lumber trade between tbia port and San
Francisco and San Pedro.
Steamers J. J. Loggie and South Coast crossed
out early this morning, bound for San Francisco,
with redwood lumber cargoes.
Carrying passengers, as well as a Inmber
cargo, the steamer Washington departed shortly
before noon today for San Francisco.
With a largo number of passengers and a
consignment of mail and freight, the steamer
F. A. Kiiburn departed this morning for San
Francieeo.
Steamers North Fork and San Pedro departed
this afternoon, the former for San Franetaee
and the latter for San Pedro. Both carried
lumber cargoes.
' The body of August Schmidt, a longshoreman
who disappeared with Albert Ross three weeks
ago, eras recovered from the bay last night.
The body of Ross haa not been found.
SAJP PEDRO, Oct. 9.—The steamer Beaver ar
rived this morning on schedule from Portland
via Astoria and San Francisco with passengers
and 1,600 tons miscellaneous freight. The Beaver
will clear on the return trip tomorrow.
Steamer St. Helens completed the discharge ot
1.800.000 feet of Inmber and cleared today far
San Francisco to load freight for Portland.
Steamer President proceeded this morning for
Ran Diego with passenger* and freight and will
touch here tomorrow northbound for Paget sound
ports vis San Francisco. C. D. Dnoann. passen
ger traffic manager of >he Pacific Coast company,
is a passenger, on the President. He 1s on a trip
of inspection of tbe San Pedro and San Diego
agencies.

Steamer. Alcatraa completed the discharge of
300,000 feet of lumber for the Southern Califor
nia Lumber company and cleared for Greenwood
via San Francisco, in ballast, to reload.
Steamer Northland arrived this morning, five
days from Portland via San Francisco, carrying
passengers and freight lor tbe West Cpast Steani
ahip company and 000.000 feet of lumber con
signed to the Southern California Lumber com
pany.
British steamer Oswestry. Captain Wattley,
2,354 tons, arrived this morning. 6i> days from
Rotterdam via Kuropean and South American
ports. Its last port of call being; Punt a Arenas,
on September 17. The Oswestry will discharge
800 tons of coke and general cargo for the Cres
cent Wharf and Warehouse company and is
scheduled to proceed Friday for San Francisco
carrying 4,000 additional tons of general cargo
for Henry Umd & Co.
Steamer Bowdo4n arrived from Eureka via R«
dondo Beach, discharged the remainder of a
lumber cargo and cleared tonight on the return
trip.
Five bids for additional dredging in tbe outer
harbor were received yestwday by Lieutenant
Colonel McKinstry. The bids ranged from 30
cents to 48 cents per cubic yard. A minimnm
of 850.000 cubic yards 1* to bo dredged in the
area lying between the So foot contour line and
tbe wharves of the Outer Rock and Harbor com
pany and proposed municip.it dock. There is a
goveniraemal appropriation of $327,250 available.
