HOODOO SCHOONER
RUNS INTO ROCKS
AlVshfield Finds Berth Upon
Reef in Dense Fog and
Suffers Badly

from Point Orient
picked out a berth
on the rocks just
west of Point Ori
ent and smashed in
its stempost above
and below the
water line. But
for the fact that
the schooner was
At 5:14 a. m. the Marshfield. in a four
knot speed, crashed head on against
the reef. The bow was stove in
two feet. Without -waiting for a sig
nal. Engineer Kennedy, acting prompt
ly in reversing the engines, saved the
craft from piling up. The heavy leak
was stayed partially with a bulkhead
*o that the pumps were able to take
care of tho. water, and the distressed
craft made its way back to Howard
street* pier No. 2, where it was laid up
for the night, with all pumps working.

The Marshfield left Point Orient at
pf a. Co., bound for Hardy creek with a
light cargo. Captain Ahlin, as usual,
was hugging the north head to clear
away in good time, but misjudged his
chore distance in the fog. Even after
Tho t-rnft struck the. rock the lookout
was unable to sec tho Lime Point
light, some 200 yards to starboard.
Several weeks on the dry dock, with
the setting of a new stempost and
water line timbers, will be necessary
before the craft ran he made sea
worthy.
Panama Boat In
Pacific Mail liner Pennsylvania,
v Charles Austin, put In from
Balboa via San Fedro yesterday morn

a big slide in the Culebra cut of the
canal during; the middle of last month,
in which three steam shovels and a
train of flatcars were liuried without

Captain Austin reports that when he
left Ball.o;i, September 29. all was in
readiness for the raising "of the Pacific
Mail liner Newport, which sank at the
Balboa wharf several months ago. On
Sth the three pumps were tested
and found in good working order, and

Hamburger Freighter In
The big Hamburg-American line]
freighter Alexandria, Captain Scham- !
men. put in yesterday from Pisagua,
Costa Rica, with cargo for the Kosmos
lino, after an uneventful voyage. The
Alexandria is not under charter to the
Koemoa line, but Ls -working in con
junction with that company. Its cargo
for this port includes r.,150 bags of
nitrate from Tocopilla and two cases of
machine petrolcs from Antofagasta.
Allot- discharging at Oakland long
wharf, where it will be taken early
this morning, the freighter will pro
ccc(\ to Victoria. The Alexandria was
a month and seven days from Pisagua
and a month and eleven days from
Puerto Culebra.
Japanese Entertain
A reception was held on the Japanese
freighter Tsurugisan Maru, docked in
Qhina basin, yesterday afternoon, when
the uflicials of the Matsul line enter
tained local mercantile men and the
Japanese consul. At the reception it
was announced that the Matsui line has
completed arrangements for a two
month freight service Into ISan Fran
risco. which will mean a great deal
for the port. Tho Matsui has a good
fleet and promises to bring good car
poes. Among those present at the re
ception were Captain F. G. Wilson, Ed
ward Roberts of the Toyo Kl.en Kaisha,
Consul General Nagal and family, Naka
Jima. general manager here for the
Matsui line, and his assistant, Hiroto.

SYNOPSIS OF WEATHER CONDITIONS
The pressure is high over the greater portion
Of the country west of the Mississippi. A mod
erate depression overlies southern California. No
rain has fallen west of tbe Rocky mountains and,
with the exception of some light showers at At
lantic coajt stations, there lias been no rain lv
the United States during the last 24 hours. There
have been no changes of importance in tempera
tures, except on the Pacific coast, where it Is
decidedly warmer from San Francisco to San
Diego and deeidely colder on the Oregon eoaat.
As Illustrating the diversity of California climate
It may be noted that th# temperature did not
rise above 48 degrees at Eureka nor above 32
degrees at the Southeast Fara Hones, while at
San Francisco It reached 78 degrees, at Los An
geles 02 degrees and at San Diego 94 degrees.
