CHIYU MARY SAILS FOR THE FAR EAST Japanese Liner Carries Many Passengers and Large Cargo of Genera! Merchandise and carrying a full :argo, left the Western Pacific pier for the orient yesterday at 1 o'clock p. m. An hour later the liner had cleared the heads and was pok ing its nose into all the freight that could be stowed away. He thinks that it was a sailing vessel of some kind. The Oakland's forward apron was damaged but not seriously enough to necessitate taking the vessel off the run. No report was made by the vessel that collided with the Oakland and blow was a glanelng one it is «l that no serious damage was Veteran Mariner la Dyias "Word was received here yesterday that Captain Joseph Warren Holmes, ono of the best known of the old school shipmasters, is dying at his home in \ Conn. Captain Holmes is S6 years of age and was active and vigorous until the last few yearn. He was in the service of John Ftosenfelds Sons for many years and commanded a number of fa mous clipper ships. Among his com mands were the Charmer, Elizabeth AVfiletts and the Seminole. Captain Holmes holds probably the world's record for Cape Horn voyages. He has rounded the Horn 84 times and lias been 14 times round by the way of the Cape of Good Hope. He has many flash passages to his credit. He re tired from active service in 1882. Mongolia Is Doe Tuesday The Pacific Mail liner Mongolia, Captain Rice, is due Tuesday from the far east. The Mongolia left Honolule* Wednesday noon and vais 1,630 miles from here at S o'clock Thursday night. The liner is bringing 114 cabin pas sengers, 200 in the steerage and a large cargo, which includes 1.000 tons of overland freight and 130 tons of raw silk. Mike Fitzgerald on Doty Again ! Chat ham, built for the Loop Lumber com pany by the Union Iron works, will be launched at 4:40 o'clock this afternoon from the local shipyard. The Chatham ►4s 23."" feet long, 42 feet in beam and will draw about 18 feet. The steamer will carry I,*>Uo,ooo feet of lumber and will be used in the trade betwene here and Puget sound.
