Surprise Over Oil Concern's
Failure to Respond to News
of Purchase
By CLOVIS A. FARNSWORTH
General Petroleum's failure to re
spond yesterday to the announcement
that the company had acquired control
«rf Union Oil occasioned some surprise.
This condition was probably due to the
fact that the terms of the transaction
were not published and that there had
been some discounting in advance.
Speculation was rife as to the man
ner in which the deal had been financed
whereby General Petroleum acquired
control of Union Oil. According to one
good source of information. Colgate,
the soap man, is the person who is
financing the deal which has just been
closed by E. J. de Sabla Jr. and Captain
John Barneson, the principal owners in
the General Petroleum company.
It will be remembered that Colgate
fa the man who financed De Sabla and
John Martin In their early power ven
tures He if a man of large resources,
and it is believed that he has thrown
the weight of his millions into the
trade that hap given General Petroleum
control of Union Oil by the purchase
of the Stewart interests in the latter
company.
General Petroleum was oftpren in
N>w York yesterday at $33.50, with %J
--bid. No pales were reported. In this
city a block of 45 shares was offered
at '$37."0. but there was no buyer. The
announcement of the absorption or
Union Oil by General Petroleum caused
a slump of several points in Union
stock, because it was understood that
no provision had he«»n made for the
minority stock

D. & R. G. IS STRONG
The largest gross earnings, the
largest net revenues and the lowest
transportation costs in October of any
previous month in the company's his
tory. That is what new money, new
management, new metnods and a fair
business have done for the Denver and
Rio Grande railroad.
Gross revenues for the fourth week
of October increased $81,900, or 11.3 per
cpnt. For the full month, revenue in
creased $265,000, or 12.1 per cent, and
for the four months to October 31 the
gain was $515,000, or 6 per cent. In
creases are now becoming cumulative
because results of improvements made
to the property axe becoming more ap- ■
parent.
Operating expensee, for the same
reason, decreased $34,000, while net,
after expenses and taxes, increased
$300,000, from $491,000 in 1911 to $791,000
in 1912, equivalent to 61 per cent in
excess of the previous year. Surplus

PACIFIC GAS ASTD ELECTRIC
John A, Brltton of San Francisco, vice
president and general manager of the
Pacific Gas and Electric company, is in
New York, according to the "Wall Street
Journal. He states that Pacific Gas and
Electric is enjoying a wonderful
growth, which will be increased with
the completion of the large expendi
tures now being made for improve
ments and extensions.
Among the leading features of the
improvement program is the great
hydro-electric development on Bear and
Tuba rivers, which will develop an
initial capacity of 53,000 horsepower.
This will be completed in the next year
and will make the company indepen
dent of outside sources of power sup
ply. It will result in a saving, as com
pared with the present cost of current
purchased, of more than sufficient to
provide for the maintenance and opera
tion of the new plant and the addition
al fixed charges incurred in its con
struction, besides giving the company
a surplus of approximately 26,000
horsepower available for future sales.
Business of the company is showing
a rapid increase, as indicated by the
fact that Pacific Gas and Electric had
102.198 consumers on December 31
1911, and on September 30. 1912. had
111.906 consumers, an increase in nine
Jionths of almost 10,000 consumers
This large increase indicates that the
additional hydro-electric output from
tvorks now under construction will be
quickly absorbed in supplying the in
«reased demand for current.
tVHAT KRUTSCHXITT SAYS
Julius Kruttschnitt, rice president
and director of operations of the Har
riman roads, has returned to New York
from a six weeks' trip over the com
pany's line, on which he visited Pa
cific coast territory from El Paso to
Portland. Kruttschnitt says:
"Business is big throughout our ter
ritory. Regarding car shortage, It is
axiomatic that aTthe height of the crop
moving season there is bound to be
some shortage of cars. It would be a
physical impossibility for the railroads
to supply sufficient equipment to move
all of the large crop together with
their other traffic at one time, and if
it were possible the country could not
provide the trackage to handle the cars
However, there is no serious conges
tion."
Regarding reports from the west that
the Southern Pacific would now rush
through the proposed new short line
between Los Angeles and Portland
Kruttschnitt said that while such por
tions of this line were being con
structed as were iequired for serving
local territory in certain regions, there
was no prospect of developing the
tnrough line for some time to come

THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1912.
Stock Market Shows Listless
Tendency and Little Is Done
NEW YORK, Nov. 18.—Extreme listlessness and narrow price changes
in representative issuea marked the day's operations on the stock ex
change.
Initial dealings showed general declines in keeping with the heavy
tone of the London market, but these were soon recovered in large part.
The market yielded again In the afternoon on announcement that the
United States supreme court had adjourned for a fortnight without
rendering decisions on several important cases of especial interest to
the financial community.
At odd moments during the day there was moderate pressure on
Reading, Union Pacific and United States Steel, while specialties such,
as American Can, Bethlehem Steel common and preferred, National Lead,
American Woolen preferred and Sears-Roebuck fell 1 to 2% points. On
the other hand, some of the equipment stocks were conspicuous for their
strength. American Locomotive and New York Airbrake scoring highest
prices of the year on small trading. Copper shares, which were heavy
at the outset. Improved later in connection with reports of heavy buying
of the metal for Europe. Net losses were general at the dull close.
Call money loans under 6 per cent and time rates were inclined to
ease because of the improved bank position disclosed in last week s
statement.
Wabaeh fours were the feature of the bond department, the balance
of that division being dull* and irregular.
Total sales, par value, were $1,450,000.
United States bonds were unchanged on call.
NEW YORK, Nov. 18.— E. F. Hutton & Co.'s wire say: "The usual
Monday's session was experienced in today's stock market. An early
recession followed by a moderate rally at noon on the announcement or
no important decisions from the supreme court at Washington. Later
dealings were without feature in the general list, being purely profes
sional and confined largely to the room traders. The lack of selling
pressure from any important sources kept prices fairly steady. The
market showed that it was distinctly a waiting one and subject to
future developments. Foreign news on the surface seemed to be not
quite so favorable on the Balkan war situation, but it failed to stimulate
"Tariff talk under the coming democratic regime also failed as a
market factor. News Stems today were specially devoid of interest, and
the movement of prices was practically deadlocked."

Boston Stocks
I BOSTON. Nov. 18.—E F. Hutton A Co.'s wire
I says; "Dullness was the feature tbe entire day
in our market. Large sales of metal at 17% c
have taken place within the last few ciys, and
these sales, together with increases in divi
dends, should stimulate activity hare. Money is
extremely tight on coppers here, and this un
doubtedly accounts for the inactivity. La Salle
is to be reopened on a new part of the property
and some strength was shown in the price today.
A year ago some thousands of shares were
bought at 3% and 4 by inside interests, and
this stock is still being held. The persistent
buying of Saeta Fe, the drill hole activity of
Keweenaw, the entrance of United States Smelt
ing crowd into Michigan camp, all portend to
great activity and great results. we again
advise purchases- both for new account and to
average old accounts. The market closed dull
and uninteresting."

changed from 0:30 a. m. to 8 o'clock, the new
arrangement is not proving to be a popular one
with members of tlip board. The new arrange
ment went Into effort at the first of last week,
and since that time the regular call of the Cotn
stocks and southern Nevadas has been a dnll and
perfunctory affair. Yesterday was no exception
to the rule, for there were only a few brokers
on the floor for the call, and actual trading was
confined to five stocks. Business assumed more
satisfactory proportions after the call, but the
late operations vrere mostly of a bearish charac
ter and the general trend" of prices was down
ward.
None of the north end Comstocks figured In the
limited early dealings and the opening bids Indi
cated that the tone was a little weaker than at
the close on Saturday. In the late trading
Sierra Nevada was sold in fair sized blocks at
declining prices and (sustained a loes of several
points on the day. Ophlr and Union were weak,
though prices showed little change, while Mexi
can sold below Saturday's low figures. The
latter had one sale at $2 and another at $1.95
Immediately after the call and declined to $1.90
bid in the last hour of trading. Consolidated
Virginia was given fair support at the same
prices quoted at the close of last week.
North Star and Mlzpah Extension were the
only Tonopah Issues that figured on the list of
sales at the opening session. The latter stock,
which had a smart rally after a period of weak
ness on Saturday, was given better support and
started to advance from the start. It closed at
70c. Pales and bid, against 65c on Saturday.
North Star was slightly hlpher for a while, but
lost the jiain later. Tonopah Merger was the
most active stock of its group and experienced
another of its spasmodic advances in the late
trading, rising to 94c on brisk buying and clos
ing one point below that figure. Jim Butler and
MacNamara were steady features, while West
End cold off a little. The others sold or were
quoted at previous prices.
A decline In Consolidated, the leader of the
Goldfleld group, had a depressing effect on the
other issues. The leader opened weak with one
lone sale recorded on the call at $2.47%. Later
on it dropped five points on ealeu and closed easy
at $2.40 bid. Merger Mines sold at 33c, Atlanta
at 18c and Jumbo at Sic. Nevada Hillg was
steady and in fair request at $1.50 all day.

GRAIN MARKET
Wheat and Other Grains
Wheat—The deadlock, which bad existed la
the local market for futures for an
period, was broken yesterday when one lone §al«f

at Saturday's revised quotations.
The Chicago speculative market was a nerr
ons affair, with all months advancing after aa
parly decline. Bullish foreign advices brought
about the advance.

CHICAGO. Not. 18.—Sudden strength de-rel
oped !n wheat today after the receipt of news
that British troops had landed at Constantin

Saturday night. ,
Unfavorable weather 1n Argentina unsettled the
confidence of the wh»at bears early In the Mβ

world shipments larger than expected, formed
more than an offset.
May fluctuated between 83% c and with
last sales at 86*fcc.
Shorts who were frightened at the action of
wheat rallied the corn market. May closed
steady, at 47% c.
Oats displayed independent strength, making a

Provisions offerings were limited and the
