W. P. Hammoß, who has amassed a
large fortune in the gold dredging in
dustry in the Sacramento valley, com
pleted the purchase yesterday of 160
acres of oil lands in the Coalinga dis
trict, the property being in section 12,
township 20 south, range- 14 east. He
also made payments aggregating ap
proximately $150,000 to the* Empire Oil
company, the Republic Oil company and
the De Luxe Oil company, which virtu
ally completes the purchase of these
three properties.
The quarter section in section 12 was
bought from H. H. Brix, the B and B
Oil company and the Coalinga Central
Oil company. Hammon has been mak
ing payments on these properties for
about a year and anticipated the final
payments, which were not due until
next January. There are 12 produc
ing wells on the property.

NATOMAS MAKES CONTRACT
The Natomas Consolidated of Cali
fornia, which has undertaken the recla
mation and development of 90,000 acres
of river land Just north of Sacramento,
has entered into a contract with the
Oro Electric company for a perpetual
water right more than sufficient for the
irrigation of the immense holding.
This contract is of greatest import
ance in the development of the great
Sacramento valley, which is today the
scene of many great development j
projects, including the building of elec
tric railroads, hydro-electric generat
ing plants and the reclamation of vast
acreage. These activities are more or j
less interdependent and are rapidly i
bringing the great interior valley into
Ita own. Many millions of foreign
capital has already been attracted to |
the district.
In the development of its tract the
Natomas Consolidated is spending mil- :
lions in building levees, construe ting :
drainage canals and preparing for the ;
subdivision of its enormous holdings, j
Its major property, consisting of a strip !
22 miles long and four miles wide, ex- !
tending north from Sacramento and!
bordering both the Sacramento and the
Feather riv<*r.s' will be put on the mar
ket first. Much of this land in the
northern part is now fully protected
against inundation and plans are now
being made to plant 2,500 acres of this j
to alfalfa.

FARE TO SAX RAFAEL
Investigation of the passenger rates ;
between San Francisco and San Rafael ■
on the Northwestern Pacific has been \
begun by the railroad commission on j
its own initiative. The single fare is .
35 cents and the round trip rate 50
cents, but the round trip ticket is issued
1q such form that it may be used for j
two eingle trips, which would have the ■
effect of reducing the single trip fare
to 25 cents. To clear up this dis
crepancy a hearing will be had before;
Commissioners Loveland and Edgerton •

F EISHHACKER GOES AORTII
Herbert Fleishhacker left San Fran- j
cisco for Portland yesterday to look j
after the interests of himself and aeso- j
ciates in the Northwestern Electric {
company in the Oregon city. The com- |
pany is building a 20,000 horse power
hydro-electric plant 40 miles from Port
land and has obtained a 25 year fran

DECIDUOUS FRUIT SHIPMENTS
The California Fruit Distributers re
port that for last week California i
shipped 6 cars of pears and 120 cars
of grapes, making 3,124 % cars of pears
this year, against 2,311% last year
and cars of grapes, against j
6,001% last year. Only a few cars oft
pears remain to be shipped. The grape :
season is also nearly over. The last j
of the Emperors are now being shipped ;
from Fresno. They have been in strong
demand and have sold very well. The
packing of some of the finest Emperors
in the state in sawdust is still going
on. These grapes will be in good con
dition for the holiday trade.

PATRIOTS WITHDRAW GOLD
A curious result of the exodus of
Greeks and Bulgarians during the last
few weeks from this country to take
part in the Balkan war is the almost
complete exhaustion of the supply of
French gold coin among the money
changers and private banking estab
lishments throughout the country.
French gold coin is particularly popu
lar with the Greeks and Bulgarians,
because that coinage is current in their
countries. If they can not get the
French "napoleon" they take the Eng
lish sovereign, an<j this they have had
to do lately. It is estimated that at
least 15,000 men of these two national-
Hies alone have left the United States
in answer to the call from home to
take up arms against the Turks.
Zimmerman & Forshay and Guttag
Brothers of New York claim to handle
the bulk of this business for the Greeks
and Bulgarians, and a conservative es
timate from their observations is that
each returning patriot took away on
an average about $200. This means
that about $3,000,000 in French gold
coin has been withdrawn during the
last few weeks.
HEAVY DEMANDS FOR COPPER
Europe is making heavy demands for
copper, considerable business having
been booked in New York yesterday at
17% cents for electrolytic. Stocks in
Europe are lower now than they have
been in months. It is estimated that
to date the Balkan war has consumed
about 25,000,000 "pounds of copper. A
producer who watches the situation
closely figures that this country is to
day consuming at the rate of close to
900,000,000 pounds of copper a year. He
bases his estimate on the increased
purchases made so far this year by the
large copper consumers compared with
the corresponding period of last year.
He says that in the event of a satis
factory settlement of the Balkan dis
pute, Europe will start a buying move
ment that will soon reduce surplus
stocks in this country to the lowest
level reported over the last 12 months

MINING STOCKS
It was tbe same old story of an apathetic
and humdrum market for mining stocks at the
opening session of the Bush street exchange t*s
terday morning, and further evidence that 'the
early opening of the board was not looked npon
with favor was furnisbeil hy a petition signed
by many inemhers asking the governing body to
restore the official call of the Comstocks to* the
old hoer of 0:30 a. m. There seemed to ho
little objection to holding the call for the eicK-ks
THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL 20, 1912,
Prices of Stock Issues Rally
After a Temporary Depression
NEW YORK, Nov. 19. —After a temporary depression, prices of stocks
rallied today, and at the close net changes among the principal is^
were small. The opening was heavy and quotations in the early tramng
gave way on comparatively small offerings. Canadian Pacific, which was
weak in London before the opening here, continued its decline, iaii-
News of brighter prospect? for peace in the Balkans acted as a mild
tonic, and in the midday trading the losses among- the representative
stocks were recovered. Toward the close quotations eased off slightly.
The most conspicuous changes of the day were among stocks ordi
narily inactive, some of which were subjected to steady pressure.
American Brake Shoo preferred lost 18 points, American Woolen OV2,
Bethlehem Steel and American Cotton Oil, which recently has at
tracted some attention by its rise, lost 2 points.
In view of the better prospects for the ending of the Balkan war. a
decline in foreign exchange rates attracted some attention. Demand
sterling fell to the lowest point of the year. A" settlement of the war
would cause a decided relaxation in financial circles, in Europe, encour
age the return to regular channels of a large amount of money, which has
been held up for more than two months, and, it is thought, might place
American bankers in a position to bid successfully again for a part of
the weekly offerings of South African gold in the London market.
Bonds were dull. Total sales, par value, f1,840,000.
United States government bonds were unchanged on call.
NEW YORK. Nov. 19.— R. V. Hutton & Co.'s wire says: "Today's
stock market has been one of many cross movements, with, strength in
some of the industrial specialties and sluggishness tn the general list of
standard issues. In the more speculative lixt of rails and industrials,
where a short interest always exists, there was moderate support and
occasional rallies by important interests, who are apparently desirous
of holding the market steady. Liquidation was evident in stocks like
Chicago and Northwestern, Illinois Central ;ind some pressure in St. Paul.
Tlie selling of these stocks could not be trnced, however.
"Metal securities were kept fairly steady on trade reports, but there
was no attempt to create any rise further than a rally on the profes

to be bullish, but buyers had oviier views and
as a consequence tbere was no trading. The spot

firmness being due largely to the fact that

CHICAGO, Nov 10.—Wheat-E. F. Hutton
& Co.'g wire says: "Some strenjrth. following an
easy opening, was seen in wheat, partly the ro
strtf of the com strength aDd partly on wet
weather in Argentina. There were also pre
dictions of lip Jit receipts ahead in the poiith
west. Lnter rumors that peace was near in
the European tangle helped to shade the faith
of recent buyers. The subsequent slump in
eon, the blockade at some of the Fort Wil
liam elevators on Lake Superior, and the list
less call for cash wheat In all directions finally
counted against wheat and there «v a very
bad break in prices, values losing IVi to
or morf from the top. Export clearances were
317,000 bushel?. World's available supply in
creased 8,300,000 bushels'.
"Corn— An unusually largo trade and violent
fluctuations in com. There was a general
slaughter of smaller shorts and an attempt wa«
made to stampede one of the larger ones. Sev
eral large local traders bought corn at top
prices in the attempt to start a general demand
from larger shorts but found they had been
filled up by several large commission house
concerns on the bulge. This corn was sub
sequently dumped overboard. Resulting declines
carried the market back to about yesterday's
closing. St Louis reported a very much de
moralized cash market, while some of the
other outside markets were higher. Cash corn,
here was steady. Shipping sales were 80,
--000 bushels.
"Oats—Followed corn, scoring a very sub
stantial advance while the shorts were cover
ing, but losing It on cealizing sales on the
rise. Cash concerns little December, and
there were some sales made to go to store—*K>.
--000 bushels—with shofte preparing to fill their
contracts. Minneapolis reported some good cash
sales of cash oats to go to seaboard. Cash
oats in sample market sold mainly ] ,i to
higher than yesterday.
"Provisions—Went about the same course aa
grains. There was a very sharp flurry under
the lead of January Pork in which local specu
lators headed the buying. A Milwaukee packer
sold freely on the bulge and there was other
realizing and short selling. Ail of the ad
vance was lost."
