CLOVIS A. FARNSWORTH
All the national banks, in response to
: by the comptroller of the cur

their condition at the close of business
November 2«. Excellent showings were
made by the nine national hanks of this
city. The statements showed low re
serves, indicating a strong demand for
money to carry on the growing indus
tries of the state.
The previous statements of the state
savings and commercial banks of this
city also reflected the great growth of
San Francisco.
On another page are the statements
of leading national banks of San Fran

m:YKLOPME\T OF WEST
R. .1. Dunham of Armour & Co. has
just returned to Chicago with glowing
accounts of the great development
work in the west. He said:
'Development is the west is almost
wonderful. The country Is moving for
ward at such a pace that important
changes are to be noted within a year's
time. The people age extremely pro
gressive and. it can be said, full of red
blood.
"Long account is being taken of the
future in the plans of the people. There
is apparent a systematic intention to
look ahead to future needs. In the
city of San Francisco this is specially
marked. For instance, hotels that be
fore ftie earthquake and fire had a ca
- of 500 persons, have been re
built on a basis of capacity for 1.000
persons. This idea runs through all
operations. Land, too, has been ren
dered - ; o productive that a price of $300
an acre is ordinary for farming or
ranch purposes. Soil that, would com
mand $200 an acre in Illinois readily
brings 50 per cent more in California.
"Again, the rapid growth of the
country is causing new capital to be
veimmed. It is recognized that the
west, of itself, can not finance the
large projects that are accompanying
its development. The people are using
ail their own available resources, and
must look farther cast for the extra
• apital needed."

Harriman Issues Subjected
To Feverish Fluctuations
XEW YORK. Dec. 3.—Feverish fluctuations in Harriman securities
featured the stock market today as various opinions "as to the ultimate
effect of the dissolution decree prevailed. Early firmness was succeeded
by pronounced weakness in Southern Pacific and increasing heaviness in
the other securities affected. Professional operators took the view that
separation of central Pacific from the Southern Pacific would hinder the
development and operation of the latter road and tbey sold that stock
heavily until it ruled three points under yesterdays close. Conspicuous
strength was shown by Reading. The general movement of prices was
downward. Steel fell below its recent low level. Money rates were main
tained at high figures with renewals at ft per cent. Bonds wer,e irregular.
Harriman securities led the stock market at the opening today. Union
Pacific rose 1% and the preferred I*,.- Southern Pacific opened with a
slight gain, but on subsequent sales relaxed 1% under yesterday's close.
Southern Pacific collateral Is rose two points."
Rear operators .-old Southern Pacific freely in theory that the carry
ing out of the dissolution order would seriously affect the status of the
property. The price sagged 2% to 107 and I'nion Pacific also reacted a
point. Partial recoveries occurred afterward when Reading manifested
considerable strength.
Liquidation of a large amount of Can depressed it three points and
hampered recoveries in other quarter* where the pressure was abating.
Continuous drives against the market ultimately canceled the two
point rise in Reading and tent I'nion Pacific. Steel, Copper. Smelting and
Northern Pacific a point under yesterday's final figures. Breaks of two
to three points were made by many less active stocks.
The market closed firm. - *
Speculative sentiment underwent a change in the final hour and tflere
was a substantial rally which was most effective in Reading, Steel and the
Harriman stocks. Short covering was largely instrumental in pulling up
the market, but the earlier low prices also attracted buying for the long
account. Monetary conditions were less of a factor in the day's movement
and the rise was achieved in the face of a final advance in call money to
9 per cent.
NEW YORK, Dec. 3. —K. F. Tlutton <*. Co.'s wire says: "Today's Stack
market was strongly Influenced by a number of unfavorable factors. The
Union Pacific decision yesterday and the money situation both contribut
ing to much selling and liquidation in spots. ' The final outcome of the
I'nion Paciflc decision and its relation to other important systems of rail
toads created serious distrust. The money outlook over the first of the
year was another matter of concern to hankers here and it was amply
evident during the session that loaas carrying industrials were being
forced out.
"The secretary of the treasury says there is no necessity for de
positing government funds in our banks at present. This means let Wall
street liquidate some of its speculative commitments; and who can tell
how far this will go.
"Talk of a physical valuation bill on railway property in the lower

Tiicv refused to foOon the recent sharp decline

the consensus of opinion was that I here was no
pressure to sell and That the decline in futures
simply increased the discount here under spot at
the south and thus rendered it more difficult than
ever to bring cotton to ihis point except at a
very heavy loss. The unsold stock here Is not
much more than 20.000 bales and is owned prin
cipally by one house. Wall street interests,
which last week sold heavily, were buying freely
today. So wen- some of the spot booses. Local
shorts also covered. There was buying hy Mem

by spinners is considered as one of the bpst

the day: 4.17.000 bushels of wheat and flour were

movement of wbett to date has been 225.tMVi.n00

We do not believe there Is any easy money left

CHICAGO BOARD OF TRADE
CHICAGO, Dec. 3.— E. F. Huttnn * Co.'-. w |r«
says:
"Wheat—Technical speculative conditions hare
outweighed all others In today's wheat market.
There is evidently a large short interest which
has arrived at the point where It is in n" po
sition to make a determined fight. Meanwhile
there has evidently been slow but persistent ,-.b
sorption of wheat on dips below 90c for May
that has left the market well drained of a
floating snppl.v. Yesterday's deliveries of cash
wheat have evidently gone the way of the fu
tures, absorbed by competent buyers. December
delivery has been relatively the weakest here
and the strongest elsewhere of any of the fu
tures, rallying here toward the last. Its dis
count under May here at one time was t'.
6*740.
"Kansas City reports that elevators that .b
livered wheat oni yesterday have tried to get
it back since, but found 250.000 of the fIOO.OOO
bushels taken by millers. War news has been
Ineffectual today, the v*cakno.,s of the European
grain markets being discouraging to alarming
reports circulated early. Prospects are for an
armistice agreement today. One of the peculiar!
tie* of the market today has been the infre
quent and fractional reactions from any given
point. Northwestern receipts have again been
larger than last year. but. show a falling on*
from last week. This Is partially due to rail
road desires to clean up. following the rush be
fore the dosing of lake navigation. Milling de
mand here poor. No cash sales reported. North
west reports a broad general milling call with
prices firm. Southwestern prices firmer. 9
"Corn —Started Just a shade easier but ral
lied even more promptly than wheat and closed
steady with rather slow" gains thereafter. As in
wheat, the gain appeared to be due to strictly
speculative conditions in the pit. Several large
and many smaller shorts covered In whole or In
part and bullish local speculators and commis
sion house investors bought and helped the
bulge along. Cash concerns report largely In
creased offerings of new corn from lowa and
local shipping concerns report that eastern de
mand is very slim, Buffalo corn underselling
that offered here. Illinois offerings here have
gained materially but not equal to the gain
from lowa. Shipping sales reported 75,000.
Liverpool weak with spot there lower.
"Oats —Oats followed otter grains, making
best price toward the close. Elevators and ship
pers bought the nearby deliveries. Aagentine
exportable surplus estimated 100.000 bnshels. by
far the largest ever heard of there, and, in fact,
larger than any former crop. Shipping sales re
ported 255.000.
■'Provisions — Lower all around daring the
greater part of the day. Yesterday's closing
bulge evidently discounted the showing of much
smaller world's stocks of lard than expe. •
Hog receipts here and west large, with today's
run west 133.500. against 128.373 last year.
Trade fairly large. Selling mostly local."
