Produce Firm That Sent IVlaize From
Durban to Antwerp la Having
Shipment Itctnraed
JOHANNESBURG, -Tan. S. — Tt Is
stated here that a produce firm which
shipped 10,000 bags of maize from Dur
ban to Antwerp at the beginning of
October, landed p'-i-f being $3.12 a bag,
is having the shipment brought back
again, the price at Durban now being
§4.12 a bag. with every prospect of an
advance.
The prlee on the f t;i?i. l Is at present
:-.ts less, but it is r> I ready feared
that the increased coet "t" foodstuffs
may offset to a considerable extent
whatever advantage may FMtflt from
an Increased supply of native labor. By
way of mitigating , the effects of the
drought in districts where famine pre
vails, the government has taken powers
by regulation to authorize an Increase
of from $10 to $25 in the advances
made to natives by the
agents when tliey are about to leave
their homes for the purpose of pro
ceeding to work on the mines.
The drought is reported to have
broßen in the Orange Fre State. Tt was
high time. Potatoes were selling
a few days ago at $7 a bag, as against
$2.7-"i last year; onions at $3.75, as
against $1.25, and forage at twice its
normal figure.

Catcher Wilson of Giants
Illustrates the Point
With a Story
BLOOMTNGTON. 111., Jan. ."..—"I see
UlAi the averages of the Nations 1
league give me three home runs." said
Arthur "Wilson, .second catcher of the
New York Giants, who is spending the
winter at his home.
"It Is a curious fact," he continued.
"that all three won games for the
team. One of these drives centered j
about the most remarkable came of my i
career. "We were at home, playing
Brooklyn, and as it was Saturday there
were 30.000 persons present.
"At the beginning of the seventh the
score was a ti<", and McGraw sent me
in to relieve Chief Meyers behind the
bat. There was no change in the score
until the ninth, when Brooklyn got men
on third»and second.
"Suddenly the man on third made a
dash for the plate. Jeff Tesreau, -who
was pitching for us. tossed me the ball
and the runner started back to third.
I ran down the base line after him and
should have caught him by an easy
throw to Third Baseman Herzog.
"I threy the ball all right, but it went
to the outfield and the runner scored
what looked like the winning run. As I
walked to the bench I got a severe pan
ning from the fans. Their howls shook
tho stand?.
"I was 'rotten, a bush leaguer and
a bonehead Barry! - In our half Groh
singled with one gone. I was next up
and supposed that McGraw would send
some one to bat for me, and thus show
me up right. But he said nothing, and
I wont to the plate.
"Rucker was pitching for Brooklyn.
The first one he threw was a bit wide,
and I missed it a mile. The fans sent
up a deafening Jeer.
"1 was expecting the next ball to hp a
curve, but Rucker sent it straight
across the plate. I connected
and the ball shot off on a straight line
for the left field bleachers.
"As I was rounding first I paw It fly
into the upp*er lier. I ran as fast as I
could, and overtook Groh between sec
ond and third.
"'Hurry up! , J said.
"'What's the use?' he replied. 'It's a
home run. .
"And that's what it was. A? I trotted
