FIRE THREATENS
SALMON CARRIER
Flames in Donkey Room of
Star of France Quickly
Put Out by Crew
All But Five of Alaska Pack
ers' Association Ships Are
Now on the Way
Fire hi the donkey room of the ship
Star of France threatened yesterday to
cause a hitch in the dispatch of at least
one unit of the salmon fleet. Prompt
action on the part of the crow prevent
ed a spread of the flames, which were
extinguished before anj' serious dam
age had been done.
The fleet pent north by the Alaska
Packers' association is larger this year
t iia ti last. All but five of the ships are
now at sea, on their way to the north
ern canneries, and the last of the five
will be on its way before the end of
this week.
The dispatch of the fleet this year has
been remarkably free from trouble. In
the old days the sailing of the salmon
ships meant a continuous performance
In which all kinds of trouble figured,
from disorderly intoxication to mur
der. Placing the ships on a strict pro
hibition basis wrought a changre for
the better, and today the sailing of a
Mlmon ship Is about as orderly as the
departure of a passenger liner.
The ships themselves were never in
better shape than they are now. This
is rtne largely to the system introduced
by Captain Mnser. I*. B. N.. retired, who
has been superintendent of the Alaska
Packers since he left the navy.
When the ships come in from Alaska
they ore given a thorough cleaftingr.
Everything In the living quarters that
is movable a:>d combustible is taken
out. and what can't be scrubbed is
burned. The-«hips are fumigated, and
when a condition of scientific cleanli
ness has been attained the living quar
terg are painted and refitted. This Iβ
done in winter quarters, where the
ships are otherwise given a thorough
overhauling. When the time comes to
send them north the ships are not only
ready for anything that comes in the
way "of a tussle with the elements, but
the living quarters, clean, airy and
comfortable, are ready for occupation.
This care of the ships has paid in the
improved health of the cannery hands
and greater efficiency all around.
The ship* still in port, but ready for
sea. are the Star of Italy, Star of
Prance. Star of Greenland, Star of Lap
land and Star of Finland.
Honoitilan Sulla Thin Afternoon
The Matsr.n liner Honolulan. Captain
Bennett, will sail at 6 o'clock this aft
ernoon for Honolulu with a full com
plement of p.issen?ers and a largre
cargo. In addition to the usual ship
ment of livestock, th» Honolulan -will
take, hack to the island port the ponies
used here by the Hawaiian polo play
ers. Comfortable quarters on the main
deck have heen prepared for these
small but hlgti hred horses and a small
army of grooms will attend to their
comfort on the high sea.
