■ ;" ■"" AA--':
Alter an extended period of dullness,
during which trade was unusually quiet
even for the dull - -■'*■*. the market
for dried fruits is showing more tone
and activity with prices for some de
scriptions working upward. Prunes
ore particularly firm, with the outlook
ror growers and jobbers more reassur
ing than it has been for some time
past. European buyers are operating
In the local market again, "and .this
activity, together with rather unsatis
factory crop prospects in some parts of
ihe state, has changed conditions to
such an extent that large handlers are
expecting a general cleanup of last
year's yield. ■ Basis prices are higher
than they were a week ago. and larger
premiums are being obtained for the
big tea. All handlers are quoting
to 4 50s which are the largest sizes ob
tainable in quantity, at the flat bulk
basis rate of sea pound, a sharp ad
vance. Apricots,.which have been dam
aged by frosts in some growing dis
tricts, continue very firm, with stocks
steadily diminishing Prices for the
other fruits show no change as yet--
Greatly increased arrivals brought
about a break in prices for strawber
ries long Washington street yester
day, and the* decline had* the effect of
popularizing, the berries among trades
men and consumers. More than 250
chests came in from nearby districts in
addition to about 400 crates from the
south, and, $10 a chest became a top
price for everything except one or two
favored brands of ?Longworths? Cher
ries were also In greatly increased
supply and lower, with 'the. bulk of the
offerings selling slowly because of the
unattractiveness of the fruit. There
was nothing new in apples or citrus
fruits, both being in fair request..
Vegetables were in abundance, with
prices for almost everything on the list
more or less lower. Arrivals of -aspar
agus were far in excess of ordinary re
quirements again, and with tradesmen
inclined to purchase sparingly, the can
ners had things their .own .way and they
reduced their bids to 40@50c a box,
which figures' sellers had to accept, or
carry the bulk of their consignments
over. Old crop potatoes were steady
at unchanged quotations. - The feature
of the onion market was the arrival of
the first new reds of the season. Five
sacks came in from Stockton and they
were forwarded to Oakland, owing to
the congested- condition of the local
market. y y «
Tn. the grain market barley futures
were exceedingly dull and lower, with
sellers unable to effect a single sale of
the Hay option, and there was less
excitement in the cash grain. The dull
ness was merely the result of a reac
tion ihat followed Monday's upswing.
Cash" wheat and oats remained firm at
unchanged quotations* and there was
continued firmness In, ha*' and feed
stuffs. In the bean market everything
except small whites continued dull and
weak. Grain bags were easier and
lower 'for spot and futures-
Quotations for dairy produce re
mained exactly, the same as on Mon
day, the market being particularly firm
for butter, despite a heavy increase in
the arrivals. The-only change in eggs
was a decline of -if a cent in firsts*,
the quotationsfor the other grades be
ing apparently satisfactory to every
one. It was reported that local buy
ers had quit paying a premium to
ranchers in Petaluma. ~
Receipts of poultry were liberal, as
is usually the case on Tuesday, but
prices for everything were maintained
with a fair degree of firmness.* An
other car of eastern hens*, the second
for the week, was received.
