BUSINESS,- COMMERCIAL ANO FINANCIAL ~ SECTION CANNERS WORKING ON STRAWBERRIES Packers Take Advantage of I Overstocked Market and | Buy at Low Prices | Speculative Trade in Barley at a Standstill; All Spot ■ Grains Strong The wholesale.fruit market was so hadly overstocked with 'strawberries yesterday that receivers were obliged to turn to the canners for relief,: and the latter, who had been quietly: wait ing for the regular.'trade to t become filled up,.took'several-large--lots-.of .-the and other large varieties out of the hands of sellers at the flat rate of $3 a chest, the lowest opening price named for canning account In a number of years. Receipts from all sources continued to increase, deliveries from "Watsonville and Palo Alto being in excess of 1,000 chests, while- the • ar rivals from the Florin and.Fresno .dis tricts were over 600 crates. The crated berries practically went bogging owing to the abundance and "comparative cheanness of the superior, quality;chest offerings. The weakness*, in berries was shared to some extent by cherries, which were in evidence 1 everywhere. nnd posted buyers had no difficulty in obtaining concessions* on round lots. -The first raspberries of the season ap-. poured from the Los Angeles region, a crate containing 12 small, baskets being received. ? The berries found buyers at 35 cents a basket.- Apples anil oranges, while rather dull, were steady as to prices, y All descriptions of seasonal vegeta bles were in abundance, with prices for everything except,, rhubarb inclined to sag. Even peas were lower..although receipts were moderate and advices from the transbay farms .said that shipments would probably be lierhtfor several days. The market for:old crop potatoes was steady at previous, prices, while onions were Inclined to easiness. The butter market developed a firmer tone, on light receipts,' a good demand for local use and some "ship ping business, which resulted in extras gaining half a cent" Cheese was gen erally firm, the only price change being a decline of half a cent in fancy Young Americas. There was no trading in eggs on the exchange and.the old quo tations were consequently allowed to stand. Tn the grain market speculative trade in barley was at a standstill; not a single transaction being;recorded in the options. Sellers were strong In their views at the outset, but when it became apparent that buyers were in different there was a noticeable dispo sition to make small concessions.- Spot barley remained strong at Tuesday's advance and there was continued, firm ness in wheat and oats. Hay and" all descriptions of feedstuff s were > very, firmly held; The bean marketwas dull, with a tall decline in pinks.- indi cating that sellers were tiring of hold ins at high, prices. y - Poultry handlers continued to report a moderately active and steady market and prices for everything on the, list, with the possible exception of squab pigeons, were well maintained with a fair degree of firmness.; y Receipts of Produce, May 7 Flour., qr sis. ...2.710'1/cather, rolls ... 40 Wheat, ctls .... .
