GOLD IS MOVING
TO SOUTH AMERICA
Bankers Expect This Year's
Volume to Be Larger [
Than Heretofore
Harriman Stocks Lead in
Upward Movement —
Good Bond Market
, NEW;' YORK, May 22.—Tn a compre
hensive upward movement,' which lifted
the important -stocks 1 to 2 points, the
market feroke away, today, from the
narrow groovy. which it has* been fol
lowing recently. T .Tradins,~was heavier,
and the ease with which prices were
marked up.suggested a scant, supply of
stocks. * VT^Jf
*It [ was assumed j that short selling had *!
been; overextended and that covering
primarily was responsible for the rise.
„■ - Prices relapsed | from the high point
in the last half hour after the most

,;been|satisfled^^^^'^p^,r : " *",-
The Harriman r stocks led: in ! the up
.wardft movement' being influenced by
persistent rumors that a plan had been i
agreed upon for separation of the
properties in accordance with the de
cree of the supreme court. Apparently
the only basis* for the report was 1 the
fact that a joint meeting was held of
representatives of the Union Pacific and
Southern Pacific boards. The firmness;
of Anion Pacific recently, and its ready
response previously to similar uncon
firmed/, rumors, »have strengthened the
belief that satisfactory progress! la be
ing made in the negotiations. - - .'
7 Considerable , importance was at
tached 7to the 'announcement that
$100,000 g01d,7; had been engaged"; for;
export to Venezuela.
The engagement was. *- believed to
mark the beginning of outflow of gold
to ;; South America, which occurs s each
yea r.'*'j In the opinion of c; international
bankers. * thjs year's movement* will be
larger than 'usual. .".'--.
- In view of. the efforts which are being
made by the principal banks of Europe
to;build up.-their* gold reserve, it
regarded'as probable that this country, 1
with its unprotected store of gold,

nia Petroleum, which fell to a new low
I record. Selling of these stocks did not
I seem to have any effect on the rest of
the list. The Harriman stocks were
leaders *\ in r?, the urn. The v" copper
issues show strength and many believe
they: will be leaders in the upward
turn. '-he It was predicated that | Nevada
Consolidated directors! would declare; an
extra dividend of 12% perhaps 25
cents per share at' a meeting next Tues
day. A sharp rise 7ln Chlno was on
buying for Boston account and expecta
tion of inauguration of dividends in
that*, issue. During the late afternoon
prices' eased off fractionally from high"*
some of the traders showing Inclina
tion to renew their short lines, but sell
ing was if absorbed without difficulty.
More' optimistic feeling prevailed at the
close than for some time past, and gen
eral ft' sentiment seems *s inclined to be
bullish."
