BUSINESS, COMMERCIAL AND; FINANCIAL SECTION DECEMBER BARLEY CONTINUES WEAK Further Liquidation in Dis tant Option Spot Grain Quoted Lower Heavy Arrivals of Cherries — First Peaches of the Sea son Received TV..- December barley option alter nately advanced and, declined within a range of less than 1 cent a cental In the local speculative market yesterday, linally closing slightly higher on- the day after continued liquidation had parried it down several fractions below, •Tuesday's last quotation. While ; the closing rally gave the market an ap pearance of strength, the situation was uncertain with sentiment in the pit somewhat mixed. The May contract «old at $1.48 in the morning, a decline of 2 cents from the last recorded sale, and this altogether with a drop of 50 Tents a ton in the spot grain -made the situation appear easy during the early trading period. Trading in the pit was ronfined almost wholly to the Decem ber option. * Cash wheat remained Arm nt the old quotations, while oats were | quoted at a narrower range, with j sellers inclined to be strong in their j views. Feedstuffs were quoted at un- hanged prices, though rolled barley •was inclined to weakness in sympathy j with the decline in the whole grain. •: Peaches were added to the list ; of ; seasonal novelties* in the wholesale■ fruit market yesterday, a consignment of 60 crates of the early Alexander j variety being received from the Red-i banks Orchard company near Visalia. The fruit was well colored and it was held- at $2.25@2.50 a crate. Seedling anricots from the same source were offering at $2.25 a standard crate, a substantial advance over the prices asked for the Prlngle variety from other sections'. A heavy influx of cher ries from the river, mostly black Tar tarian*, brought about another sharp decline in prices. A break in the' Los Angeles market resulted in consign ments Intended for the south being sent here, hence the decline. Royal Annes were offering in small lots and sol _ at $1 for drawers and 10c a pound In bulk. Receipts' of strawberries were the largest, the deliveries exceeding 1.400 chests from nearby districts alone, and prices settled; down to slightly lower levels. The canners came to the assistance of the market, however, and took several large lots of the Malinda variety at or near the Inside quotation. Raspberries, black berries and gooseberries were in in creased supply, but prices had little change from the previously quoted rates. There was nothing new in apples or citrus fruits. ■',--: There was not a scarce article on the list of vegetables, and, although there was a good general demand, prices were rather weak than other wise. New garlic appeared and sold at 6 cents a pound, and egg plant from Coachella brought 30 cents a pound. Texas cucumbers were offering at $2.25 6 crate,- while standard boxes <pf the ■same article from southern i California could be bought at $1.25. -* • Aside from some little easiness in hens, that was due to the marketing of two cars from the east Wednesday, there was nothing new in the poultry situation. The market was in * satis factory shape generally with the trade expecting everything to be cleaned up at the close of business today. An unexpected advance in butter, amounting to one cent in /extras - and half that much In firsts, was the feat ure of the dairy produce market yes terday. The market ruled ' firm at the advance. Wednesday's sudden advance in eggs was followed by a : reaction, extras losing two cents and selected pullets half a cent. The quotations for cheese were unchanged.
