United States Consul General George
EL Anderson has made the following
report on trans-Pacific passenger traf
fic:. .-..."■■ivrv ; i
There was a remarkable increase in trans-
Pr.clfic traTel genera. during 1912 over previous
years, and 1913 promisee ,to eclipse all j records
IB this line. , The departures of cabin passengers
from Hongkong for ports on the west coast of
the United States during the first quarter of 101S
as compared with '•; the corresponding >■ quarter, of
1912 scow an Increase of exactly 40 per; cent,
while ensragemcnt.4 of accommodations» for the :
next quarter already! made exceed the record for
any pervious year In the same proportion." The
traffic at present: j;a»n« eastward Is so heavy
that accommodations can not be ' had in < many
cases for weeks to come. •• ■- . . , ,
Round the world | tourists - traffic by way of
Hongkong has grown about CO per cent in the
last year. Several reasons are assigned for this,
notably Increased Interest of travelers in the far
rest because of recent political events, a general
disposition .to break • away from worn tourists'
paths In Europe and countries surrounding the
Mediterranean and the effective work of ; tourist
organization*.. The attractiveness and advantage
of a short winter season in Egypt followed by a
winter trip through India. .lava unci the East
Indies am! a return to the United . States or
Kurope by way of the Pacific are. appealing 'to
greater numbers of travelers each rear. ,
One of the most important factors in the in
f-rease. however, is the marked improvement In
all means of communication >in and to the far
Nearly all the -steamer line*,, both to
Europe and across the Pacific, have put on fine
large new steamers. Railways in Manchuria
Japan. North China and the Philippines* have
established or are establishing improved raihvav
service*. Weather conditions '■■. in the ■ Pacific,
especially during the milder;mbotes of » the year, ,
but also all the year round as compared with the
Atlantic, favor travelers.' Improved' hotel" ac
commodations in most of the ports also enter
Into tbe situation.- ,: . ■•
One feature of the genera, improvements is the
vast increase in the number. of tourists visiting
th" Philippines—an increase due not only to
interest in the islands, bat also to improved
communication between the islands and Europe
and the United States. ?

Stork Brings Seventh Girl
The stork that favors the office force
of the Alaska Pacific j Steamship com
pany with its attention is an industri
ous but not very versatile; bird. i- It
Visited the home of Contracting , Freight
Agrent M. F. Cropiey Monday night and
left there a taaby girl. This is the sev
enth visit the stork has paid members
of the office force within a compara
tively short . time, and this is the
seventh girl the bird has brought.
Cropley might be sore about it :if the
bird hadn't shown rare : discrimination
In picking out for him and hi* wife the
very finest girl baby in all the world. -.?•
