RAIN CAUSES RISE
IN FRESH FRUITS
Showers Check Gathering o:
Berries and Cherries—
Crop Damage Feared
Cash Wheat Firm, With Sev :

ley and Oats Steady
The rain checked gathering of straw
berries and cherries in nearby giro
ing district Tuesday, and, as a eonse-*
quence, receipts of 'both' were ligrht in
tlie local market yesterday and prices
vent up. The firmness caused by 'the
light i tM-eipts - Was enhanced by the
belief that today's arrivals of straw
berries would be wet" and. moldy and
if was also feared that the ripe cherries
on the trees would be badly damaged
if warm, sunny weather followed; im
i lediately after the rain. -'-A. good por
tion of yesterday's arrivals of f berries
were in rather poor shape, and the
scarcity of choice offerings sent prides
for such stock up sharply, while the
light arrivals alone were sufficient to
cause a i stiff advance in values for
cberaies.' Both packed and loose offer
ings of the latter were higher, with
the advance in the cheaper sorts shut
ting the cannere out of the market
temporarily. The rise in cherries and
strawberries was . not the only J new
catu»e of the market, for the first
plums and. green. apples of the season
appeared and a crate of cantaloupes
was received from Fresno. The plums
ere of the early cherry variety and
came from Vacaville. being packed in
the regulation 10 pound flats. ; .They,
were offered at 75c a box. but they
were too green to attract traders. The
new apples were also. too green to find
favor witli buyers, and sales.were slow
at 60(ST5c for 20 pound r boxes. The
crate of cantaloupes from Fresno con
tained one do2en melons and it'found
» buyer a t $2.50. Among the other
deciduous fruits raspberries" were lower
on liberal arrivals from the Los An
sreios region, while gooseberries and
apricots were fairly steady, with the
supply of both just about ; balancing
the demand. Figs from Yuma. Ariz:,
sold at $3,509? 1 a box., an*d some from
Indio were offering, but they had not
been disposed of tip to a late R6Ur.
The vegetable market was still over-
Rtocked with asparagus, and as a large
percentage of the arrivals came to
and in poor shape, ' prices r'emaihed
very weak, with only giltedged lots
soiling up to $1 a box. Carjners paid
tiO cents a box for good No. 1,; and
further sales , of off grade .stock* were
reported at 25 cents for canning ac
count. Half Moon Bay peas were in
limited supply and higher, while offer
ings from the transbay farms dragged
badly at low rates, owing to their poor
quality. . The market was still filled
up with string beans and summer
squash and buyers' terms ruled for
genera] offerings of both. The first
sack of green corn from across the
hay was received and sales were readily
effected at |" a rloken. CoacheUa
yreen corn was practically unsalable.
In the grain market speculative
trade in barley was quiet, with-the
December option opening weak and
sharply lower and rebounding later to
within a fraction of Tuesday's closing
level. The May contract was not
quoted. Spot barley was held at the
old quotations, but Pales were' slow,
while there was a strong ; inquiry for
feed and seed oats. Black seed led in
point of firmness.- Cash wheat was
very firm, with Club, Russian Red and
J orty-foJd 50 cents a ton higher.
There was no change in the market
for dairy produce, both butter and
i heese being firm at the prices quoted
on the preceding day. Not a pound of
butter changed hands on the excharige.;
Prices for eggs- continued to make
small gains, half a cent being added
to the quotations for firsts and selected
pullets, while extras were bid for at
the quoted rate. ~ , : .
Poultry handlers continued to report
easiness in hens, as another car came
in from the east, and receipts from
state points- showed that shippers were
••tilling- their flocks and forwarding
old birds to the market. Other fowls
were in fair request at satisfactory
prices. ; . :"-.v-v-?
