VOLUME 114.— 19. VENTURA IS DUE FROM ANTIPODES Liner Is Expected to Reach Port This Morning About 11 o'Clock Among the Passengers Is Sir Edgar Vincent, Famous : | British Official The Oceanic Steamship company's liner Ventura, Captain Cowell, is due today from the antipodes with a full j complement of passengers and a big cargo, which includes a large ship ment of frozen meat. Tlie Ventura, was C 72 miles from here at 8 o'clock Tues day night, and is .expected to reach quarantine about 11 o'clock* a.m. JV , . The new service of the Oceanic com pany between here and Sydney, con tributed by the fast liners Ventura and Sonoma, is growing in popularity and bookings for future sailings give assurance of a steady increase in the business. The Sydney short line is the principal link In the shortest route between London and Sydney. The com bination of comfort with speed has at tracted the attention of travelers in all parts of the world. . A The re-establishment of this line has been of great Importance to San Fran cisco on account of the high class of travel it attracts through this port. Among the passengers on the Ventura is Sir Edward Vincent, one of the most distinguished of British govern ment officials. Sir Edgar is a member of the British colonial commission and is on his way back to London after an official tour through Australasia. ' Sir Edgar was here some years ago as the guest of the late - Wliitelaw Reid. He is one of the worlds recog nized authorities on colonial govern- ment and has found time in his busy life to write a number of books. Thomas Sails Today for Manila The army transport Thomas, Captain J. M. Healy, will sail at noon today for Manila with a large number of military passengers and a full cargo of army and navy freight. While in port the Thomas has been equipped with a Marconi wireless outfit, a five kilowatt affair equipped with a quenched gap. The quenched gap is something new. Before this innovation the dots and dashes of a message being sent could be heard all over the ship. To one who understood the code reading, the message was simply a matter of listen ing to the noisy crashes of escaping juice. To everybody else the noise was an insufferable nuisance. The quenched gap shuts off this noise altogether. The sound caused by the outgoing wave can be heard inside the room as a faint hissing. As far as the outside is j concerned, the quenched gap has elimi nated ail noise and also the possi bility of outgoing messages reaching unofficial ears. Chiyo Maru Has Many Passenger* '. The Japanese liner Chiyo Maru, Cap tain W. W. Greene, left Honolulu at 10.o'clock, a. m. Tuesday and is expected to arrive here early Monday morning The liner is bringing 160 cabin passen gprs from China and Japan and more than 200 Asiatics in the steerage. The cargo of 3,800 tons includes 80 tons of raw silk. 50 tons of matting and 400 tons of tea and other overland mer chandise. Water I<*ront. \ote« Receipts of lumber yesterday by sea amounted to 2,078,000 feet. The harbor commissioners will hold their regular Weekly meeting in the ferry depot this morning. v>: The American Hawaiian freighter Missourian is due today from Salina Cruz with a full cargo of New York and European freight. ,' '■• The Pacific Navigation company's Harvard. Captain Jepsen, arrived yes terday morning from the south and galled at 4 p. m. ' for - San Pedro and Kan Diego with a large number of passengers. The Alaska Pacific Steamship com pany's Buckman is due today from Seattle. The Blue Funnel line is making a strong , bid for the trans-Pacific trade out of Puget sound. The big liner AJax will operate hereafter between Seattle and the orient. Captain Soule of the Pacific American fisheries company's steamer Windber, "which was here not long ago under going , extensive repairs, is frankly afraid of the number 13. His ship was loaded and ready to leave Bellingham for Alaska ports early on Friday. June IS, but in spite of the demands of his agents that he get to sea, he refused to cast off a line until several minutes after midnight. The freighter Protesilaus left Pugdt sound the other day for the orient and Great Britain with 15.000 tons of cargo. The freight included 10 carloads of mail, the biggest shipment of its kind ever taken to the far east on one vessel.
