STATE BANKS SHOW
BIG GAINS IN YEAR
Individual Deposits Reach
the Grand Total of
$561,921,649
Increases Over Same Period
of 1912 Shown Through

An excellent "barometer of the finan
cial condition of the ■tat« la afforded
by the abstract of the reports of con
dition of 648 state banks of California
as of June <. 1913, completed yester
day by the state banking: department.
The figures given show decided gains
in resources, surplus? undivided profits
and deposit.-* over the corresponding pe
riod In 1912. : ":,•*-?? :■-
The fall already has shown the gains
by state banks in San Francisco, but
increases in Lite year were general
throughout the state. The grand total
of Individual deposits in 1813 was $561,
--1*94.36. as against $522,945, for
1912. State and municipal deposits in
1913 were $19,031,911.31 and in 191- they
were $13,523,43 :
The gain in combined deposits was
J44.454.395.20. The gain in combined
resources was $30,964,722.53. The gain
in combined surplus was $1,592,340.74.
The gain in combined undivided profits
was $390,093.26.
Total combined cash on hand June 4,
1913. was $26,934, 8 OS. 68, as compared
with $24,199,035.45 on hand June 14,
1912. The total value of bank prem
ises was increased from $23,907,717.86
In 1912/ to 3,748.66 10 1913. The
grand total of capital stock In 1913 is
$62.665,593.96, an Increase of about
$2,000,000 over 1912.
Excluding Los Angeles, Oakland Sac
ramento, San Diego and Stockton, the
total resources and liabilities of state
banks in San Francisco exceed the total
for the remainder of the state by more
than $65,000,000 and the individual de
posits here are about $71,500,000
greater, though the paid up capital in
San Francisco banks is nearly $9,000,
--000 less than in the country banks.
The 36 state banks and branches in
Pan Francisco show a gain in individ
ual deposits of $6,300,707.30 in . the
year. The 38 banks and branches In
-i Los Angeles show a gain of $7,30.5,
--617.10. The 18 banks and branches in
Oakland show a gain of $2,949,245.92.
The-ll banks of Sacramento gamed
$2,306,767.22. The seven banks of San
Diego gained $1,393,126.49. The six
banks of Stockton gained $652,507.53.
The 432 banks of the remainder of
the state gained $8,968,645.74).
Stockton with its seven banks ranks
fifth In resources and. deposits and
fourth in individual profits. Oakland
is an easy third to San Francisco and
Los Angeles throughout the list.
The 548 state banks include 86
branches, 146 commercial banks, 136
savings banks, six trust companies and

COTTON CROP DOUBLES
According to information received
by the Southern Pacific company in
this city yesterday the cotton crop
in this state this year will more than
double that of 1912. the value of which:
wig $3,000,000. While California acre
age in cotton is but 14,000 acres as
compared with 35.022,000 acres jin the
whole country, that is 55 per cent more
thin the state planted to cotton last
'ear and the condition of the crop is

whole crop.

INCREASED SUGAR YIELD; ■-•-- 7
Reports received in the financial dis
trict indicate that the sugar beet
yield is going: to be heavier this year
than last by 15 to 25 per cent. Grange
county factories will cut no less than
290,000 tons of this product, and farm
ers will receive $1,750,000 or more for
the season's output.
The Santa Ana Co-operative Sugar
company and the Southern California
Sugar company, will begin their cam
paigns about the middle of August: The
Santa Ana Co-operative field men re
port all that factory's acreage in good
condition. The factory will cut beets
from between 10,000 and 13.006 acres
this year, about double last year's acre
aire.
The Southern California Sugar com
pany finds the fields contracted with it
in good condition, and prospects for
heavy yields are encouraging. This
plant has a large share of its 8,500
acres located in the rich lowlands
where the average yield is the highest
In the United States.

whereby they believe the banks of the *
west side of the Sacramento .valley wil
buy sufficient bonds of - the $15.000,000
road issue to ."construct the west side
highway from Sacramento across .Volo
basin and from Benicia to Red-Bluff.
Mr. Stevens will put the plan before
the Sacramento Clearing House asso
ciation and ask for Its approval, It

EUREKA PIPE LINE COMPANY
The Eureka Pipe Line company has
announced its regular quarterly divi
dend of 10 per cent, payable August 1.
to stock: holders of record July 15.. 1 his
indicates that the company will pay 40
pet cent in dividends this year. Its
earnings last year were officially re
ported as $2,618,389, or 52.37 per cent on
the company's capitalization. -At its
present market around $360,- the stock
is yielding 11.11 per cent. -

PACIFIC LIGHT AND POWER
Pacific Light and Power company has
commenced construction of -its, trans
mission, line from the Big Creek hydro
electrical development, to Los Angeles.
The Big Creek development will be of
150,000 horsepower and the transmis
sion line will be" 248 miles-long, said
jto be-the" longest high tension trans
; mission line yet constructed. The line
will.carry current at 120,000 volts. .At
Lot***"Angeles the current will he dis
tributed to the city systems and also to
the pacific * Electric Railway company
and other utility corporations. *

company has been organized as a con
solidation of the Home Telephone com
