AYc visited Cohiinbiti during the
week, were we met ninny familiar
lace?. The folks there were in the
highest glee all day Tuesday over the
pleasme (hey expected to enjoy that
night at the Opera House, in the ap
pearance of Booth.as Hamlet. Per
Bens from all portions of the State
came to sec the great tragedian, not
one of whom whose luck it was to get
a scat, went away dissatisfied. The
performance commenced at 8 o'clock
p. M., hut long before thai, time every
scat in the p:ir<iuetlc and dress circle
had its quota of human ilesh, and ere
the curtain rose for the first act, the
building was alive with hundreds
whose anxious countenances showed
that they would rather sec liobtbjj.linil
to have a first class legislator's inte
rest in the Big Bonanza bill.
The performance was a grand suc
cess. Booth, by hard study and elose
application, lu.s made himself not
only familiar with every word of his
part, of this great drama of Shak- |
spcarc, but seems also to understand I
every thought, impulse, passion, and
feeling that moved the hard of Avon
in its composition. Ho embodies
himself thoroughly with the charac
ter of Hamlet, and makes the audi
ence follow him in every word, look
and gesture. It is really a rich treat
to see him, supported as he is hy a
Company both strong and intelligent
'Apart from the pleasure of seeing
Booth, there was not much of any
other sort at the Capitol.
The Legislature was in session, and,
as a matter of course, a first class
farce was being enacted at the State
House. But visitors did not seem to
feel any special interest in procuring
reserved seats in that building.
There is not much business before
that body, and if the men who make
it up had any regard for the tax-pay- j
ere, they would adjourn and go home.
We had a glimpse of the "ins" and
"outs" up there. Ex-Governor Scott
struts about bigger now than he did
while Governor. Barker if gone and
he seems to feel that all is well with
him now. The delectable Franklin
J. Moses, Jr., now cronerously ycleped
Judge, still stalks around his old
haunts, but not with that same air
which distinguished <him as asatisHcd
vi Hi mi when Governor. He looks as
though he may quit the bench?if he
ever gets there?with as much disgust
as Saucho Banza had for his Island
before he had Governed there many
days.* Dennis, N eagle, v.t id f/cHus
omnCy are also loafing conveniently
near the delightful places that used
to know them. But one can sec that
? . thev 'seldom get their hands into the
pockets of the tax-payers now-a-days.
Sonio of them wear old clothes, and
appear unable to buy a servic i ble
tooth brush. Of course they may be
playing the 'oposum. For ways that
arc dark and tricks that are vain
they arc very peculiar.
J \ Money.is scarce in Columbia, trade

. Hard to Please.
The life of an editor is by no means
the smoothest thing in the world.
'The chair-edit oral is not eushb ncd
with roses. Where be frequently hopes
to phase, he not uufrcqucutly raises
lhcdovil, and brings down curses deep
and ihre it j ion his unprotected bead.
If he omits anything, he is hr/.y. If
he. speaks of things as they are, people
get angjfy:; ' If he glosses over or
smooths down the rough points, he is
bribed. If he calls things by proper
names, he is unfit Jor (be position of
editor, if he does not : urnish his
readers with jokes, he is a mullet; if
I.e. tines, he is a iallleliead, lacking
liability, If be condemns wrong, lie
is a good fellow, but lacks discretion.
If he. IoUj Wrongs ami injuries go un
mentioned, he is a coward, lfheex
poses "a public man, he does it to
gratify*"'spite? is the tool ofti clique,
or belongs to the "outs." If he in
dulges in personalities, he is a black
guard; if ho does not his paper is dull
und insipid. If ho prints au account
of a BepubHenn meeting, the Democ
rats .straightway look daggers at him.
If ho ^flpqilah d? the Democracy, or
any member of that party, instantly
the Bepublicans raise a hue and cry
find swear that he is a hyena, and
means to devour every person declar
ed free hy President Lincoln? It' he
soys farmer Jones is n successful anil
intelligent planier, lie is accused of
being bribed with ft mess of turnips.
If he .speaks a good word of this or
that minister, il is because his sins arc
winked at. If he says anything
against pin-back dresses, the com
munity swears that he is mad because
all the girls have turned i heir backs
on him. If he censures the custom of
ladies wearing striped stockings, he is
vulgar, and warned to look for locals
elsewhere. No matter what he docs,
he cannot please everybody. Here
you will find Squire Bcllwcathcr who
orders his paper stopped because he
wants to live under a monarchical
government, (but hasn't money
enough to go to one), and, ergo, dis
likes the News and Tim; s because it
lias for its motto "God and our (this)
country." Thero you will butt
against Mr. Weasel-Sncezel, who is by
nature antagonistic to ever}' news
paper that is not made up entirely
from .Josh Billings. Col. Ilard-to-Con
vert, would like to take his Con nty
journal, but will never do so until it
promises to revive the Confederacy.
And then there's a dozen or more who
want to pay up und stop "dc paper,"
because, as they say "We don't like
de ritt til dat you's a habit ob puttin' iu
dare."
Now, kind reader, is it possible
for us to do all this. And, yet, be
cause we cannot, the N. ws and
Ti \\ es is not always acceptable. Who
has the next complaint to make?
Useless Legislation.
Our Legislature is not the only
one where filibustering and tinker
ing over local and unimportant mat
ters consume much valuable time, as
witness the following from Put
Walsh, one of the editors of the
Augusta Chronicle und iSvntincl t who
writes to his paper under date, 21st
inst.j about the doings of the Georgia
.Legislature, now in session. The Em
pire State is all over Conservative :
"In it any instances ellbrtsarc being
made to lit particular cases and iu
many others to make changes simply
for the sake of doing something that
had better be left undone. The num
ber of local bills is enormous. In
glancing over the proceedings of the
Legislature the reader cannot fail to
be struck with the triflirlgiusignifi
cance of sonic of the measures intro
duced. Here is a bill to change a
county line to accommodate some man
who wishes to have his residence or
his place changed from one county
into another; here is another bil' to
allow somebody to jteddlc without a
license; another to prevent fish traps
in the waters tributary to Gum
Swamp; another to prevent hunting in
Sleepy Hollow; another for tho relief
of the sureties of Mr. Smithy who has
been unfortunate in handling the
funds of this county. And still
another^: To incorporate the lice
Gum Refining Company."
?-m -? ?? --
"Darwin says that the male grass
hoppers use their hind legs to fiddle,
on the edge of their wings, and that
the best fiddler always wins the affec
tions of tho females first." We find
the above sentence floating around.
Our proposition is that wc all go to
"fiddling.' '?? /tcxinytan I) iitpafch.
Hut wc are not all grasshoppers,
brother, and are, therefore, without
''hind legs!" There's where you have
the advantage of many of your con
temporaries.
