Hot-Headedness.
"Wo Sprint elsewhere in to-day's
pnper a short article from the Journal
of Commerce in which that paper,
while it gives us credit for shrewtl
nessj^ceuses us of being "grand
motherly" and mistaken in our opin
ion of its temper, and the spirit which
inspires its course. ~\Vc greeted our
contemporary with such a cordial
welcome that it is with considerable
reluctance that wo arc constrained to
differ from some of its conclusions.
If to .advocate an honest and
economical government for all South
Carolina-be "grandmotherly," we tell
the Journal of Commerce that we are
content to occupy that possition, and
to continue to do battle op that line;
for it is our opinion, forced upon us
by .the. .united expressions of the
people, that the prime and para
mount object of nil parties now is to
secure to South Carolina a just, in
tcllc'gch't, and honest administration of
public- affairs Of course they want
men for this work whose garments arc
not stained with the corruptions of
the past, and whose antecedents will
be a sufficient, guarantee to the people
that if elected they will rule fairly
and righteously and help to raise
this tax-i idden State from bankruptcy
and .ruin and place her once more on
the road to prosperity. The "mild
mniincrdness" of the Journal of Com
merce will not be effectual in bring
ing about this consummation. Its
editor needs first a cold hath to show
him the excited :datc of his pulse, and
salts, and snrsaparilla, and sassafras
tea to cool and tone down the
unnatural warmth of his Bourb on
blood. After going through a pre
scription of this kind for a mouth or
so, he might be brought down loa
level with our common and practical
humanity, where, upon reflection, he
would,,acknowledge that his sweel
temperdness was nothing more nor
less than bold, rash, inexplicable
hot-hcadedncss. lie would then be
of use.
The Journal of Commerce is a new
venture and we should like to see it
Esuccectl. If, however, its success is
to militate .in any way'against the
interests of the people, we cannot
hope ioT-it that career which we would
otherwise be glad to sec it enjoy.
Charleston is tho metropolis of old
Soi\tU-..Gftrolina, and one of the most
important commercial cities of the

the bright newsy face of the Journal

Mr. Editor?Having casually heard
that the communication in* News ami
Courier with reference to ''Trial Jus
tices," has brought out a reply, al
low me to say that the remarks were
made upon iho system, and no allusion
was had to any special officer. The
Court iu itschaigc located \t generally,
referring to the useless litigation and
anuoyance brought about by incompe
tent officials, and my article used the
term general, which should have been
applied only by those who fell under
the lash of the Judge. A competent
officer in that position will always be
able to show the public that he is an
excepticn to the rule that has been
set upon the many incompetent, who
have brought odium upou the system
and themselves.

Bitter Sweet.
Our Orangcburg contemporary, the
News and Times, is shrewd in some
things, but a trifle graudinothcrly in
others, as the extract which we print
elsewhere will conclusively prove to
ever) discerning reader. #,T^be News
and Times shrewdly observes that our
Broad street neighbor docs not repre
sent the Democratic population of the
State. In reality, our Broad street
neighbor does not profess to be a
Democratic .paper. It talks Demo
crat sometimes, to bo sire, as Grant
talks horse, by way of diversion, and
it frequently tells Democrats what
they ought to do for their own good
and the advancement of its favorites.
But it don't profess to be anything
but an independent paper, nud knows
more of what ought to be done from
its own standpoint than all the Demo
erats that ever got together in con
vention. The News and Times says
the Journal ok Commerce is bitter
and therein the * etc* and Times is
graudmothcly. We are not bitter at
all, wc arc only straight. Wo are
the sweetest-tempered and tho mild
est-mannered paper that is printed in
South Carolina, but wc are straight.
The old notion that Democracy is
only another word for hotheadedness
and excessive zeal is altogether tin
exploded notion. Level-headedncss
is the most useful quality for Demo
crats to possess. To be level-headed
in all things is the constant aim of
the Journal of Commerce.?Journal
