THE HERALD AND MAIL. Friday Morning, June 22d, 1877. CIRCULATION 2,200. Col. John M. Fleming, is again in (hi editorial harnew, as political edi tor of the Knoxaille Tribune. Hi limny friends over tlie State will re ioice at this. He is one of the truest men and ablest political writers in the South. Hp will keen that end of the column all right. The competitive drill between the Porter Kiiles of Nashville and the Chickasaws of Memphis, did not come off at Huntsville, although a large crowd were present from all parts of the State to see it. The Porter Rifles wanted to drill bayonet drill, and the Chicks didn't said they hadn't been notified. The companies ought to have drilled, after enticing so many lHple to Huntsville. Samuel J. Tildes. Mr. Samuel J. Tilden said nothing in a public manner in regard to the late Presidential. election, since the in auguration of Hayes, until a recent event afforded him a lilting opportu nity. Hon. Thos. A. Hendricks, on his why to Kuroix?, was honored with a grand reception by his friends in New lork. Air. IiMen, or course was present, and spoke as follows : hvervtMMly knows that after the re- eent election men who were elected by the people President and Viee-1 rest dent of the United States were counted out, and men who were not elected were counted in and seated. I dis claim any thought of jK-rsonal wrong mvoiveu in mis transaction. ioi iy ;wiy act or word of mine shall that lie dvarfed or dragged in personiil griev mic.' which is in truth the greatest wrong that has stained our national annals to evcrv man of the four and oh.'I'U t millions who are defrauded of th fruit of their elective franchise It J as great si wrong to the country as it was to me and no less to every man of the minority will the ultimate con M oiiences extend. The evils in gov niiiinit grow by success and impurity TIh-y do not arrest their own progress Tin y can never be limited except by external t'orct-s. If the men in jos- session of the Jovernmeiit can, m one instance, maintain themselves in power against an adverse decision at elections, such an example will Ik? condoned. The temptation exists al ways. Devices to give the color of J:iw and false pretenses on which to ground false decisions will not le wanting. The wrong will grow int practice if condoned. In the world's history the changes in a succession of governments have usually lieen the result of fraud or force. It has been our f.iith and pride that we had estab lished ji mode of peaceful change to lie worked out by the agency of the bal-i'tt-lmx. The question is, whether our elective system in its substance, is to be maintained. This is the question of questions. Lntil it is hnally settled there can le no lstlities foil in led on in ferior questions of administration k1 iey. It involves the fundamentitl right of the jwople. It involves the elective principle. It involves the whole system of popular government. Tiie people must signally, condemn a great wrong which has leen done to tic .111. They must strip the example of anything that can attract imitators. They must refuse a prosperous immu nity to crime. This is not all. The people will not Ik.' able to trust the au thors r lieneficiaries of the wrong to advise remedies, but when those who condemn the wrong shall have jxiwer they must devise measures which shall render a rcpitition of the wrong forever impossible.' If my voice could reach throughout the country, and !e heard in the remotest hamlets, I would say, of jjuimI cheer; the republic will Jive. The institutions of our fathers al e not to expire in shame. The sov ereignty of the icople shall be rescued from tin's peril and re-established. Sue -.!'ul wrong never appears so tri umphant! v as on the very eve of its fill. Seven years ago a corrupt dy ds-tv culminated in its power over ibe million of people .who live in the city f Nework. It had conquered r 'bribed or flattered and won almost everybody into acquiescence. It t- pearcd to be inevitable and invincible. A vcar or two later its members were in peniten'larics. History alioui ids in similar examples. We must Ix-lieve in the right and in the future. A great and noble nature will not sever its k- iilical lioin its moral hie. ter with vice or immorality, but to ex Iose and render it hideous." The Jte- pnblican takes a poor view of public ethics when it "protests against edu cating the present generation in the secrets ana success 01 election irauos bv instructing them tnat the chief ex ecutive of the nation is not entitled to his office, but holds it through the commission of felonies." This is a simple truth, and a wise leader would protest against tne suppression of truth in favor of falsehood and fraud. 1I3.TILDZ1T AJTDT2S COUNT. Why H9 Sli Hot Insist Upon His Sights. Vtililntoii Special tiMhe Baltimore Bun. Aii eminent citizen of Alabama, w ho i t:e.scd through Washington yesterday on his way back from New York, had, while in that city, an interview with Mr. Tilden. He said to Mr. Tilden that the people of the South were eon- vim. e l tiiat he had been fairly and l.iwfullv elected to the office of Presi dent of the United States; that the ico nic of that section, in common with the irreat IkhIv of the ieop!e of the whole United States, thought that Mr, Tilden. as the lawfully elected ruler of the country, should have taken early alter the election a decided attitude, and insisted upon his rights; that had he don.- so. and the proper announce ment of the vote of the Klectoral Col li ei-s been prevented, the House of Iteprcseiitative would have elected hii'u according tothe forms of law, and ma le itself responsible for his induc tion into the ollice which belonged to him. Mr. Tilden listened attentively to ( lie r. -marks of his visitor, a gentlemen nearly twenty years his senior. He fc'piicd that he had thought carefully 'ia most conscientiously over thesuli- i-vt in all its possible phases; that he ha 1 U'come convinced that should he a.l.ij ! the course suggested it would le (exiled by the Kadicalparty to theex- t-r.i ol drenching the land in blood; ('.at he shrunk lrom the resiwinsihity i I precipitating another terrible civil var noon his countrymen, and consen ted to the compromise which averted so di cad a disaster. He felt as keenly as anv one the impropriety of the means by which the present result bad l i en t bought aiMtut, but, lor ait that, la-did not regret his own action.
