Aside from the inconvenience of dust, a more pleasant season than this could hardly be desired. What good do liowcri do? In whatever direction one may turn his steps in this city just now a sight most inviting and beautiful is certaiu to be met with. Flowers and shrubbery in most abundnnt profusion neeuis to rife up oo every hand, presenting to the ee and heart a most grateful and beautir ful sensation or emotion. Such a state of thing is pleasant tocoutemplate, being evidence of i. high moral and intellectual refinement, and say ing in the most emphatio manner possible, that cur people appreciate the beautiful and true in Nature The rig'd utilitarian might enquire, "What is gained by all this? does it pay?" Now, If one will judge on a large 6Ca1e,take an extend ed view of things in general, and watch them in all their bearings, such an enquiry is by no means object iouable. Hut everything must not be measured by dollars and cents. There are wants in human nature which dollars and cents cannot alone satisfy. The Creator ha not only made ample provision of food, rai ment and other temporal blessings for mankind, but he has gone farther by making abundant, we had almost said prodigal, profunori for grat ifying his tate, for ii .flnencing hi mental and moral faculties by surroimdii g oljects among them, and by no means (he leaatof what tend to man's happiness, lie made the flowers to beautify and adorn theeirih, and gratify those denires in a human being which are jo-t a natural a any other part of his being. H:iu ty, and love of the beaut iful, are relative, each supporting the existence of the other. No door-yard apears right and cheerful unless it lias a succession of flowers through the season. We are afraid of the man who does not love flowere. We think better of tli American Congress rince they hav made pro vision, through the Patent OtSce, for distrib uting not only grain and fruits, butalofl iwer aeeds throughout the whole length and breadth of the land. There is uo doubt iu our mind that our representatives ate just as well em ployed in ariaiin$ to carry out this discribu tion, oftentimes as in making lung Seche. If they wh-h to do anything for Huucombe, we will bid higher for their encouragement in horticultural improvements than for great swelling words. We trust that no person will think we are giving too muc'j pace to this ul jeer, for it eemt to us that something is duo to the good htste displayed by our people in this particu lar, and we wish to encourage it, ee that the eutire ciiy, in a few tear, may I ud and blos som like a horticultural garden, aud we appeal to all to join their love of taste and the beau tiful, so that this object may be attained. FcKsnrag JJamfactout. Aou-rig the es tablishment in our goodly city which add no little to its business and lui'mrtaure is the fur niture tuauufactury of J. W. The City Council meet to-day to determine the rexed question in relation to accepting the proposition of the County Court in rebuilding the Court Douse and improving the Public Square. Chir position upon this eubjeet is well known, and the more we have cauvaased the matter the firmer Lave become our conviction that the proposition should be accepted. Our readers have heretofore, bere and elsewhere, been advised of the necessity and importance of the proposed step, and the reasons for remov ing, and eventually doing away with the Mar ket House, aud it would be a work of snperer rogation to rejeat them now. We propose at present ouly to notice some of the objection of those who oppose the proposition. It is said, in the first place, that this scheme will cost the oorooraiion about $140,000. With all due revpeot for the opinions of gentlemen, we submit that if $127,000, at least, were de ducted from that amount, it would be some thing in the vicinity of the real amount which would be required, and even the remaining sum is nearly double what some of our scien tific calculators have set down as the sum nec essary. Those who oppose the measure set out with the assumption that it will be ne nec essary to buy immediately two sites for mar or tl-e one tor a general market as at present, ket houses in opposite portions ot the city, prepare the grounds and erect suitable build irg. Such a thing is not contemplated in the plan proposed. The removaJof the present market house, immediately, is not required. This may be the work of one, two or three years, when ample time ha elapsed to give the new system for marketing time to develop itself. That public opinion in the cities of this country i undergoing a radical and beue f.cial change upon this sul ject, is not to be con troverted, and now is the most propitious time for Nashville, also, to profit by the same progressive spirit of iruprovemeut. Thus it will be seen that the objections in this partic ular fa'l to the ground. It is then argued that a vast outlay of money wili be necessary to improve the square. Let u see. If the propnsii ion of the county should be accepted, an open space 100 feet wide is o left ujon every side of the square for a street The buildings will cover quite a large space of ground, so that scarcely more than one third of the whole area, and perhaps not that much, will be left to be improved. A large quantity of stone will be necessary for the su perstructure of the contemplated buildings and ft nee, and when it is recollected that the whole 6tU.ire is bn: a fine quarry of rock, it will be seen at once that a great portion of the ex pense necessary to the carrying out of the pro posed plan will be saved. This, with tf e ex pense proposed for rebuilding the City Hall, will doubtless be more than sufficient, to po the work ot improving the square. On the score of economy, then, the proposed plan is by far the most preferable. Let it be remembered that if the court house is erected npon the old site, all'the pro babilities or hopes for the accomplishment of this desirable object are perhaps at an end for years to come. We desire to remark here, that public opin ion is, upon this subject, hardly divided. We have met with but very few who did not favor the proposition, while its friends may be de nominated "the masses of the people," and among them the most influential of ocr citi zens, as well as many outside of the city whose interests are identified with her prosperity. Will this wish of the people of Nashville he reflected to-day by those who represent her in the City Council t We shall see. tJ7 A very large and brilliant audience as sembled at the Adelphi on Wednesday night last the occasion of Mrs. Macrearj' benefit. The entire entertainment was all (hat her most stnguine friendssnd admirers could have wish ed. A more delighted or enthusiastic audi ence has hardly convened at any entertain neut which has ever before been given in this city. JVashVlllo Tf potrruphlcn.1 t'nia.
