NASHVILLE: T. IT. GlEXy, Local and Commercial Editor. Monday Morning, June 9, 1856. Dance to lite 71 Male. Opponents of the American Party arc in the habit of Raving that the contest for the TresiJcncj will be between the Demo cracy and the Black Republicans that Mr. Fillmore will scarcely, be known in the race. A friend at our elbow, proposes to democrats who profess to believe this, to wager $200 that Mr. Fillmore gets more electoral votes than the Black Republican candidate. Furthermore, hi view of the fact, that democrats are declaring Mr. Fillmore viU not get a single Slate, he desires to test their sincerity. He therefore proposes a bet of $100 on each of the States, (Kentucky, Tennessee, New York and Pennsylvania), from which the candidates for the Presi dency and Vice Presidency are selected, $100 to $1,000 that he pets all four of these States, and $100 to $1,000 that he will be elected. Any erson can take up the first propo sition. The second proposition to be taken as a whole all together. Should any one object to taking the last proposition because he is not willing to be out of the use of so large a sum; he can put up $100 forfeit; the balance to be put up the day previous to the election. I?cleMin of Col. Xelfton "We regret to announce that Col. Thou. A. II. Nelson hat been compelled by the condi tion of bis private nffitirs to decline the ap pointment of American Elector for the State at large, tendered him by t lie State Conven tion. The Knoxvil'e Register states that it will publish this wet-k a long and very inter esting letter from him on the subject. 'I' lie Speaking- alurdny fghU The very large number preceDt nt the speak ing Saturday night, and the enthusiastic spir it which prevailed, indicate that the people, although generally quiet, are alive to t lie great importance of the I'residential campaign and hre seriously r fleeting upon the issues which are to form the ground work of discussion. Desiring to hear tlie-m issues debated, they lis tened attentively to Mr. Clinton for iiearly two hours and a half; and we are quite 6 lire they deem themselves well rewarded. Mr. V. is a very rapid speaker, and in the time he oc cupied uttered as much, and effectively, as most men would in fiva hours. His manner is peculiar, and very forcible. lie evidently has full faith in the wisdom of the ancient or ator, who counselled "uctioti." No one can li-n to him without becoming interested. His logic convinces by its clearness nud rtrength; his oratory wins by its beauty and elegance; whilst hia humor and wit are irre-t-istilili-; and his denunciation and in t-ctive ab solutely terrible. It is not our purpose to pre sent a sketch of his speech, which will not tuou be forgotten by those who heard it. Suf ficient it is to cay, that it presented abundant good reasons for considering old party issues obsolete and uniting iu support of the princi ples of the American party for the benefit of t!ie country, whose welfare is jeopardized by the great influx of foreigners, and the defer ence paid to them by the democratic party. It seems to us incredible that any candid, intel ligent man could listen to the facta he cited, and the arguments he employed, to exhibit the dangers which, to the South in particular, are almost inevitable from the growth and inso lence of foreignism fn the land, and not be con vinced. During his speech Mr. O. was fre quently interrupted by enthusiastic shouts of applause. Our citizens would be pleased to have an opportunity of hearing him again; but as he has an appointment to seitk at Memphis Thursday, we presume he cannot give them another treat. We commend him to our Mem phis friends, a au advooate of Americanism worthy of a place in the heart of every man who loves hia country and her institutions. After Mr. O. concluded his speech the crowd literally forced an exhortation out of our young friend Crowe. He did it np iu his usually fe licitous style. He has an arduous campaign , before him, aud will do his duty faithfully. Ternesxre Farmer and Mechanic. The June number of this valuable agricultural jour nal is on our table, and the information it con tains, more especially to the farmer, is alone worth the subscription price for the entire year. We are gratified to find in it important papers from the pens of some of the best in formed and mot practical men in the State. Its conductors certainly understand what is best calculated to promote the interest of Ten nessee farmers as well as their own, and as an evidence of the fact, it need only be re marked that they have secured the aid of cor respondents, whose experience and judgment, . as reeideut, practical farmers, can be relied upon. That this journal is dostinad to be one of the main auxiliaries te the success of the ag riculturists of the State, cannot admit of a doubt. Let all who feel au interest in the cul tivation of the soil, aid in extending its circu lation. Na8Bvillk Female Acibut. The fortieth an nual exhibition of this farorite Institution of Learn iog commences to-day, and will continue three day. Th worthy Principal will be glad to sea a largo re presentation of the friends of Education present each day. A national Convention of Hatters was In sesgioii in Cincinnati last week. The buMncst which occu pied it was, no doubt, quite as important as that which engrossed the attention of the democratic convention. fTNeah the clever 4litjnj" of the Tren ton Journal, is scoring the postmasters in that district in consequence of the irregularity of the mails. The same discrepancy has cant ed some of ur subscribers iu that regions great deal of anuoianre. That's right, Neal, pitch iutothem until the nuisance is aba ted. Scene is Cocut. Aa exciting scene oc curred in the office of Jastioe Ferris, on Satur day last. While a xstponemeat of a cause in dispute was being considered, oue of the parties beoame so enraged at the other in consequence of an allusion made use of, insinnatlng a family disgrace, that be struck l.is aJvciwy with a heavy stick, knocking hiiu down and cutting a severe gaii in his head. He was engaged in shoot ing birds, and setting the gun down with the ham mer tip and the niur.r.le against his side, the force of the concussion caused it to di.charpe the con tent, which passed through his right arm and his bo'iy, causing instant death. Ue was about 14 years of age, and deaf and dumb. "On, VTt Took Nerves." So exclaimed the un. fortunate Jacques Strop, when the unfeeling Macaire had the hardihood to draw that fatal snuff box upon his loth companion. Not Ies ridiculous was the recent attempt of some persons, (who certainly must belong to the Strop family), to compel the interference of the night watch to stop a little amusement In sing'mg, which occurred at a not un seasonable hour, in the lower portion of the city a few nights ego. It is stated in a Philadelphia newspaper that State street, in that city, is five miles long in a straight line from North to South. It Is occupied with retail shops and stores almost exclusively, And is the largest street, so tenanted and used, to be found in the new or old world. The Gospel is said to be preached from the pulpit of Chicago in seven difierent languages. The population of the city is about 50,000. We overheard the following conversation, the other day, says theeditorof the Home Journal, on board the Alida: 4,I met Lord Ellosmere and his party at Niagara, the other day. I knew the ladies were persons of distinction the moment I saw them, because they wore ro jewelry, uor any other ornament whatever!" They cannot be on the best terms with God, who are always quarrelling with mankind. "Oliver Oldsehool" one of the bet correspondents who ever wrote from tho national capital, in a re cent lettirtf) the Philadelphia Bulletin, states the following important facts: The Arneii(tn and anti-Amerinn parties in this city, having cm-h nominated their rumlidates for mavor, aldermen, &c , are in the field preparing for a municipal election which takes place on the first Mnndiiyin Jane. The American candidate for msvor is Mr. Silts II. Hill, formerly a Democrat, and from New IIiiiHhire. His opponent is Dr. Magruder" formerly a Whig. The Americans say that, if "Americans ought to govern America," surely the capital of America our'it not to be plac ed under the control of our foreign friends and brethren, and it is a burning shame that the temple of liberty now being erected here the new winj;s of the capital should be erected by foreigners scarcely a ninglo native born American, except some of the artiats, being employed upon it The case is the eumfl with the extension of the Treas ury Building and the General Tost Office.
