NASHVILLE; T B. OLSSN, Local and Oommerd.il Editor. Friday Morning, Oct. 3, 185B. To Citizens and Strangers. The pnblicatioa office or the Patriot, No. 16, Dcaderick street, having been enlarged, will be found open at all times, daynd night, where newspapers from all sections' of the country, and the latest telegraphic news will be found upon our tables for the accommodation of visitors. A general invitation is extended to citizens and strangers in the city to call and ' avail themselves of these advantages for ob- taining the latest news. - At ITomk. After an absence of several weeks, daring which tima we hart encounter ed a variety of adventures of travel, among ' the most remarkable of which were a day at Trfrt a I- q i ! I 1 o il ctn.ol. . V I I. . .1 ru'Mu u; , a eiirieaer garner ing, a solitary anguine Democrat, and ten days exploring expedition among the eand btrs on the broad and beautiful, jet treacher ous Ohio, we find ourselves, with no little sat isfaction, at our jxwt again. We liave long thought that there is no place like "good old Tennessee," Dd are more than ever couvinced ol it. The Lutllca. The ladies engaged in agisting the Mass Meeting Committee in preparing lianners for the great Convention, will meet at Wessel & Thompson's (foiinerly Nixon') Ice Cream Sa loon, Union St., this morning at 9 o'clock. We saw yesterday a very beautiful banner, at the room of Mr. Freeman, intended for the Donelson Rangers, at Tunk. The portraits of Fillmore and Don eltson are well executed, and the decorations were fine and appropriate. The patriotic fel lows for whom it is intended are doing good bervice in a gtxd cau-e. Colors for the Sti:ahhtoct.-. A splen did Aug is being made fur the Stmightouts. This company is composed of excellent mate rial. Its officers and men are a gallant set of fellows and none are more deserving of beau tiful colors. We are gratified to know that it will soon (possess them and are sure that they will be borne proudly and succKssfully through the contest. Akuthtb Barb ecu k The citixens of Dickson and Cheatham counties are making arrangements for a grand American Mast meeting and free barba cua on the 16th inst., at the mouth of ITarpetb river. We notice among the names of the speeches aoiL'e of the finest and most gifted young men in the State. Look out for a rousing gathering down there. Deatii or Cait. Nicholas Dati. We learn from the Huntsville (Ala.) Democrat of yester day, that Capt. Nicii. Davis died at his resi dence in L'niestone county, on the 29th ult, Capt, Davis was one of the most n spec table citizens of North Alabama, and for many years pacts ooe of the most prominent Whig politi cians of the State. The Tobaooo Choi. Having recently pass ed through a portion of the fine tobacco region of Kentucky, we know something from observ ation aud ehquiry of the prospects of the pre sent tobacco crop. It is said that the crop this seanon would have fallen fully one third short of an avernge if the tobacco had all ma tured, but the recent frosts have destroyed fully one half of that which had been raided. In Tennessee, the damage done, so fr as we liave been able to Kru, has not been so ex tensive, bnt there will evidently a short crop, and high prices tuny be anticipated. Accident. A few nights since the stage between Soiilhland and Ross' Ferry was capsized and an old peutleman had his tl.ich broken. It was set tv Capt- G. S. Peterson of the Utter place, a fleam boatsman, who made use of the implements of bis craft (ulocke&i-) to raorft eieollent advantage an 1 with a very happy result. Tne old geutletaans whose name we do not recollect, was doing well at last ac counts. lis resides io Roane county of this Slate, and is a farmer. Cit toKRK's M ii.ixekt Establishment. Yes terday wa the Fill opening day of the above establishment, and prompted by a desire to see something verj nice as well as to he in fashion (us nearly every body, we thought, was there,) we went along with the tide aud looked at the large and fine display of millinery and fancy goods there to be aeen. Mr. Crook er has brought on a verj large and varied stock, embracing all the articles belonging to the trade, of every style aud quality. The 6tock of bonnets, flowers, ribbons, trimmings, head dresses, &e. is far beyond what we ex pected to see. The finer qualities of these va rious style of goods are indeed superb, sur passing anything we have ever seen. The bon nets, particularly, we look opon aa the pret tiest thing In that line ever introduced to the notice of the public. Mr. C. is prepared to sell millinery goods at wholesale as well as retail, and oountry deal era desiring to purchase will do well to ex amine his stock. Theatre 1! eke fit of Ma. Waro. The late improvements in the theatre have given it a uiuch more Inviting and pleasant appear ance than it before presented. We were agree ably surprised at what we saw around us the first time we entered il the present season. Good taste, convenience and comfort were ev idently consulted in tho repairs which have re cently been made. Of the company now play lag, we intend to sptak hereafter. Mrs. Ward has a benefit to night. She stands deservedly high in her profession, and we trust she will have a well filled hou-e. The citizens of Louisville recently gave her a routing benefit. Mr. Wenderoth having fonnd'it necessary from engagements elsewhere to abandon his position here, the Messrs. Dodge have associat ed themselves together, and occopy the rooms on the Sq-iare, formerly occupied by Dodge & Wenderoth, aud will continue the prosecntion of the beautiful sister arts of miniature paint ing and photographing. The photographs of these genilemeu are, as works' of art, scarcely less meritorious than their miniatures. The "rhotograjihicand Fine Art Journal ' of New York, excellent authority in all things pertain ing to the fine arts, in its Angnst number, speaks ot their photographs in the following compliuenta-y language: "Messrs. Dodge & Wenderoth, Nashville, Tenneifeee. These gentlemeu have sent us some of the finest views and portraits we have ten executed by American Artists. They ap proach in detail, tifect of light and t-lmtle, sharpness, tone and general execution, nearer those of the French Photographs, than any that huve beeu shown us. Tiiey are such pic tures us we wish to illustrate our Journal with and when we can doso we shall be almost sat isb'ed. Some of them are exquisite." It should be a source of trnuilication to every citizen of Nashville to know that we have in our midst artists who rank so high; whose works linked with the name of our city add to her repute a jroad, and direct to her the at tention of a people of refined and cultivated taste wherever a love of the beautiful in art is cherished. rjLarge droves of mules pats through this city every day or two, for the Gulf States. Dr. R, Hunter and myself have made these diseases our own peculiar study for several years, and we have found that tbe only means whereby these diseases can be reached is by direct local app'ication, or the prescribing of medicines which are breathed into the lungs In the form of vapor, and are consequently brought in contact with the whole internal surfs ce of the lungs. The succest of our treatment has fully sustained the theory. Persons at a distance, sending a full description of their ease, will receive treatment according to their symp'oms. WM HUNTER, M. D., Office Eighth, between Pine and Chesnut streets, west side. sept6-8in Tax Rkiob or Akt. In this wonderful age, Art lays her master touches on almost everything . The ceilings over us and the carpets we tread on, are hallowed by Art. Art winds the railway through the mountains and the mud; makes her machines of wood ard iron, to act as if with knowledge and annihilates spice with lightning tamed down to the tuteledge of a boy. Nothing is too lofty for her touch and nothing too humble. A new proof of this old conviction has just fallen under our notice, in the shape of a Cathar tic Pill, from the Laboratory of that world renowned Chemirt, Dr. C J. A tab. If we understand the subject, he has carried that article to the farthest perfection of which it is capable. Instead of employing Drugs in its composition, a we have always thought the necessary and only way, h has with consum mate skill extracted the eir-hir of the medicine to be em ployed and cmb'ned them alo e in fheir purity together. The composition is then mixed and rolled by machinery and steam power Into a sperold p II which is wrapped in an en velope of gelatine, for protee ion from the effect of weather or time, and then thickly coated with sugar, to serve as it pas; port over the palate. Notwithstanding all the labored perfection they are ofiVred to the Public at less than on cent each. However humble the department, we think this may be safely characterized as the consummation of Art in its line. HoruVig Xnc, &i!t.
