The Snider Gnu and Mr,Hntar
Tronble.
Tho death of Mr. Bnltler. inventor of tho
Bolder gnn, waa recently announced. An
j-ngiun paper giret ino 101 lowing account o I
me treauneni he recciTea in England
"Bo far back as 1830, Mr. Bnlder. it op
eari, presented the Btormiyilemof brecch-
loading to Iho Engllah Oovcrnmcnt. and waa
called on to convert two Ennelda opon that
plan. Sabaeqnently, it waa anfrgeatod that
the ammunition ahonld be made np with Gov.
eminent powder and ballet; and, Mr. Snider
having applied for and received these ar.
tides, the trials duly proceeded 'before the
Ordnance Committee. ,A demand waa then
made upon him for the anm of 1 la. 2d. for
the material thoa famished, and It la affirmed
that the Government actually sned him and
obtained Judgment against him for that
amount. At that time his experiment oc
cupied about eighteen morrtha. Early In
1861 he went to the Continent to purine hit
researchca into the best system of breech.
loading. In 1883 he returned to England
and first exhibited a model of a gun which
formed the basis of his present invention.
Ho was assured that tho Government would
never consent to look at a avstcm of breech.
loading carrying Its own Ignition, but the
scientific persona having the subject in charge
zealously met his views, and after eight years
of labor and heavy expenditure he had tho
satisfaction to see his system practically suc
cessful, and adopted by the State.
"Bat the further pecuniary and painful part
of tho history la described to be as follows:
In Jane last he addressed Lord ITartlngton,
the then Secretary of War, saying ho thought
the time had now como when he ahonld bo
Informed how he was to be dealt with. Tbo
reply was that his claim must be considered
under three heads first, reimbursement for
expenses second, compensation for services
while employed in tho department and third,
reward for tho invention j and it was added
that the first two points coald be speedily
settled without waiting for tho third. Mr.
Snider named 2,700 as duo to him for ex
penditure and services, whereupon ho' was
notified that the matter had been left entirely
in tne nanas ot Mr. tjioae, me uovernment
Solicitor for War, and that his docision was
to give 1,000 and no more. Harassed by
creditors for debts incurred during hia long
ana costly proceedings, ecu aune tame time
helpless from sickness, and being told that
if he did not accept what was offered and give
an acqaittanco in full, he would get nothing,
Mr. Snider, about a fortnight back, consented,
bv the advico of his friends, to take the
amount, the whole of which went immedi
ately to bis creditors, not one farthing Und
ine its wav to his own hands.
" The only mitigation of tho story is that
It is understood he has been informed that
when he shall bo well enough to present him-
eeirat uo war umcouio matter will oe con
sidered and a more fitting allowanco made.
Such aro the facts as they have been con-
veyuu lu answer tu lutjuirics, uui luvru way
oe some minor inaccuracies in mem, as air.
Snider, in his helpless condition, is unable
fully to stato his own cose. Notunfreqncnt
ly tho sorrows of inventors are traceable to
their own improvidence or unfitness for busi
ness, and also to tho inevitable operation of
mo raicni laws; out in mis insianoo tocro is
nothing on tho surface to lead to any such
assumption.
" Apart from his labors on tho Continent,
Mr. Snider was, it is believed, incessantly
engaged for eight months in tho service of

of such an Item to 1,000 ia sufficient to ac
count for the exlstcnco of great pecuniary
distress. In all countries where patents aro

Mm announces the result of the great China
tea race. The race was confined to English
ships, and the premium offered was ten shil
lings atononthe cargo of tho first ship in with
the now tea. Nino ships left Foo-chon-foo
from the 29th of May to tho 6th of June last,
each laden with cargoes from the new crop.
Four of the nine were competitors for the
prize, and made an almost neck-and-neck
race for sixteen thousand miles, finishing the
voyages in ninety days and a fow hours, the
five ships landing, by estimate, fire and a
quarter millions of pounds of tea; tho Tao
ping carrying off the prize, which amounted
to about two thousand five hundred dollars,
she being lighter laden than her closest com
petitor by ono hundred and twenty-two thou
sand one hundred and ninety-ono pounds.
This is the fasting time on record. Tho
average tjno of the English tea-ships is abont
ono hundred and thirty days. Comparo with
this tho figures for the Hong Kong and San
Francisco route. The distance is, in round
nnmbers, seven thonsand miles. Tbo aver
ago time is Irom twenty-fire to twenty-eight
days. The distanco from San Francisco to
New York by railroad is about three thou
sand miles, and the timo will probably bo
about eight days. From New York to Lon
don is under rather than over fifteen days.
So that tea sent by tho way of San Francisco,
will reach tho Enclish market about forty-
five days sooner than if sent by the way of

on Thursday last, arrived In Atchison on
Batur day evening, and spent tho Sabbath

The three Government Commissioners who
went oat to inspect the second section of
twenty miles were on board, as also Senator
Pomeroy, Bishop Vail, and the dignitaries of
Aicuison ana Bt josepn.
The road Ilea through a magnificent sec
tlon of country, chiefly rolling prairie, rather
sparsely timbered, bat wall drained and cov
ered with a rich black soil, ranging from ono
to nine feet In depth. The 0ad la graded to
distanco of sixty miles oui, aboCt forty-live

eighteen miles lies la Atchison connty. Tho
company owns no lands there, bat is com-
Senaatea by a magnificent tract of one hun
red and twenty-five acres In the Kickapoo
Iteserve, just beyond. It la held to be worth
six or seven dollars per acre. The road is
well bailt on easy grade. For the first twenty
miles the surface is Irregular, and there are
many cuttings and embankments ; afterwards
the country is more level. The company ex
pect to Iron tho next fifteen miles by the
middlo of December, and to finish tho re
maining forty next year. A single telegraph
wire runs out forty miles west from Atchison.
The train arrived at the end about ono
o'clock. A little exploration, and theri lun
cheon, at which the tarty waa disturbed by
a sweeping prairie fire, which drove them to
some distance. Short speeches wero made
by General Craig, of the Hannibal and Bt.
Joseph railroad, who invited all hands to St.
Joseph to-morrow; by President Pomeroy;
J. M. Crowell, Mayor of Atchison: Rev. Mr.
Tyng; General Curtis, the hero of Pea Itidge;
Judge Woodson, of St. Joseph; Governor
Smyth, of New Hampshire; Rev. Dr. Webb,
of Boston; Treasurer Nicholls; Mr. Butler;
Colonel Clapp, of Boston, and by Senator
Pomeroy, who exhibited some fine native
cotton, destined for the Paris Exhibition.
The party then returned to Atchison,
halting only abont half way to call on the
old Indian chief, Pettignauk, with his two
squaws and half a dozen papooses. The
Commission have accepted the second section
of twenty miles, reporting it in excellent con
dition. New York Dry Oootla Market.
Tho market is in a stata of chaos. There
is an over-supply of goods, and prices are
lower and very Irregular ; for tha glut la too
great, and holders have no Inducement to
keep their goods if buyers could only bo
found. Soveral failures are announced.
Brown aheotings and shirtings are dull at a
decline, and bleached foods sell very slowly
at a considerable concession, tho etockmeaa
whilo accumulating. Heavy drills aro In
some small request. Canton flannels aro
dull. Stripes aro inactive, and ticks are
steady. Denims are not In demand. In
prints there has been a large addition to the
supply, wnuo tne pneo oas aecnnca iaz cis.,
which has not induced any improvement in
mo aemana. uincnams are in iair request
and steady. Delaines are weak in price,
The demand is hardly equal to tho supply,
ana only very cnoico aiyies realize quota
tions. Coburgs are moderately active.
Shawls of desirable stvle aro in active de
mand. Inferior goods aro much lower.
Broadcloths are inactive. Cassimeres aro
without improvement. A few dcsirablo fancy
styles sell at good prices, but all others aro
negiccicu Bauncis are auu. x.inseys in
active. Blankets are moro active. Im-
fiortcd fabrics are also very dull and mostly
owcr. The demand is but moderate even
for choico goods, such as black and colored
rrcnen merinos, ueiaincs, poplins, ana wool
plaids. Colored fine silks are wanted in
amall nuantitiea onlv. Plain and black silks
aro very dull at a decline. Ribbons and vel
vets are lower, and woolen goods are with
out inquiry.
Tho auction sales are few,' French black
broadcloths, Frenoh doeskins, silk-mixed and
fancy cassimeres sold In small lots. Dress
silk goods, French merinos and delaines, and
velvets havo been offered freely through tho

TiMrirtAt.cz Ann Tikis. The California
Stato Temperance Convention recently met
in San Francisco, and denounced the rapidly
incieasing calturo of vines In that State.
Tho Evening Bulletin criticises this action,
aa follows:
"It was a mistake In tho temperonco con
vention to aim a blow at ono of the great In
dustries of the Stato. Although it will bo
useless to petition Congress to break down
tho wino manufacture in California by oner
ous and partial taxes, the circulation and ad
vocacy of such petitions as proposed, will ex
cite angry criticism and substitute mcro
clamor and discussion for the effective re
formatory labor In which hitherto the tern
Ecranco apostles of California havo been
onorably engaged. Wine-making cannot
bo prevented from becoming a leading in
dustry here. Tho wonderful adaptability of
our soil and climate to tho business, and the
wide market which is afforded at home and
abroad, will cause the valuo of this product
to rank at least equal with that of tho gold
product. If prohibitory laws could totally
stop wine-drinking in our own State, the for
eign demand alone would even now prevent
any cessation in production; and hereafter
tho foreign demand is to be tho great depend
ence of tho wine-trroners. Tho prohibition
ists would therefore be obliged to find some
means of preventing exportation, if they atill
deBircd to prevent wine-making in California;
and in the quest of such means they would
como upon tho immovable obstaclo ot Fed
eral commercial law. Hence It was simply
Idle for the convention to talk of discourag
ing wine-gronmg in uaiitorula."
