The scheme of connecting the telegraph with the Post Office la now fairly before Con gress tn two Mil reported from two Important committees In both Honics, and will, we trust, receive the attentive consideration to which HI o eminently entitled. The main objection that we have yet heard or seen urged against the adoption of this project Is that It tends to ccntrallratton; that It la an assumption on the part or the Got crnment of dutle with which It properly has nothing to do, and that If the Government should take control of the telegraph line It will not be able to perform the service aa well as It la performed now. Well, these are good objections, aud we hope, aa we aald, to see them discussed In Congress intelligently and front a patriotic standpoint. So far aa we are concerned, we believe that there la nothing whatever In any one of the objection which we hate above enumerated. Tbe talk about centralisation ts all nonsense In view of the history of the last ten year. No great measure baa ever come before the country to which this objec tion baa not Iwcn urged. It first came up ou the question of Internal Improvement, when the spirit of a broad nationality fortunately triumphed. Tbe question again arose In the beginning of our war, when certain advocates of the State's rights theory proclaimed doc trines to which It 1 now unnecessary to re fer. The people our so-called statesmen may aa well once for all understand do not care ten cent about thi cry of central lea tlon. What they want la a strong govern ment, a government under whch they shall hare the largest amount of liberty and the greatest possible amount of happiness, and these end attained, they do not care whether tbe Government 1 centralltcd or not. The great question In which they are Inter ested lai "Will we be better served by a com pany of private Individuals or by the Gev ernment?' The experience ad far Is not well calculated to Impress them very favorably toward tbe present owner of tbe telegraph. They hare seen It grow Into a hug monopoly, stretching out Its anna to control tbe press, to dictate politics, and to crush every opposi tion that dared to raise It head, Tbe tele graph should be as free aa tho air, and when It U placed beyond the reach of any portlou of our people aa It now U the Government baa the right te interfere, and take step toward making It contribute to tho welfare and benefit of the whole people. e are glad to see the New York IhraU throwing Itself Into tbe ranks agatnit the monopolists, la an article yesterday It aaya: u hat la the real Question at Issue T Whether the telegraph which has bvcoine of as much Importance to the iiubllo aa the post ornoe, and which la destined Co become more Important shall be under the control of a company of Indi viduals, and virtually under the preMent of that company, or shall be controlled by the Uovern ment. we refer sometimes to the power of the federal Government, secured by the Constitu tion, to regulate commerce among the Htates of the Union, but no commerce is of such Import ance or so universal aa that Involved m the opei Uoo of the tekoretih. It ha become axtsnalvi tbe medium of communication from oue end of the country to the other, and Is destined to be the principal medium of the business and thought of the whole couiBiunltr, It la absurd to suppose this tnighly agent of modern clvlllxatlon shall continue to be in the hands of a few Indlvldusls or one Individual, of those who can Impose what chargea tbev please. Mr, Orion ssjs a million Kopi la tue L'mteti mates use m iriegrapn, re or ten millions, or the whole population, should Ire able to use it. To restrain the employ ment of It is to clip tbe wings of Intelligence and to arrest the education and progress of the rjeosle. A oomDanv does not rrsard the nubile welfare and only looks to Its own Interests, lu chief study is to make the largest Income by blgh rates of charges and to raise lis sfeU la tbe market. The Uoverament would have no such object, but would necessarily bring the charge for messages down to the lowest price; just as it has brought the postage on letters down to the bare cost of transmission. Then, besides the advantage to the people. Individually and di rectly, of a system of cheap telegraphing, tbe proposed measure of tbe Postmaster Usneral would be a great benefit to the press, and to tbe Eubllo through the press. Any newspaper could ave Its own wires for exclusive use and could thus furnish more ample and important news. Considering the power and usefulness of the modern press, we know of nothing that would tend to extend lis Influence for iroud more thsn this. 'In every point of view the telegraph, un der tbe control of the Government, tn connec tion with the postal service, would be a great benefit to tbe public" ' Tbe advantage to the people and tbe press are clearly and succinctly stated In the above extract, and we commend them to tbe atten tion of the gentlemen who will In a short time pass upon this Important measure. The opposition which the scheme meets In certain Journals Is purely a selfish one. Tbe IltraUl Is too great and too prosperous to bo Influ enced by such consideration, and It Is a good omen when It takes the lead In beating what la fast becoming one of our greatest tyrannies, Tag New Haven Journal suggests tbe name of lion.
