Mr. Curry resigned his office in the army In December, 1S64, when his regiment joined Gen. Sherman's forces ia the famous march to the sea. He returned to Indiana and be came a member of the staff of Gov ernor Oliver P. Morton. First Speech in Public. He made his first appearance as a public speaker in Iudiana in 1852 when he spoke in behalf of prohibi tion. He afterwards stumped south ern and middle Indiana in the cause of temperance and often engaged in de bates on the subject. He took an ac tive part In the campaign preceding the second election of Lincoln, and he took a keen interest In the political questions during those stormy days. Slavery was then the principal issue and time and again Mr. Curry en gaged In warm debates with promi nent platform speakers. He was rec ognised as an orator of so much force and ability that his services were in constant demand. His friends urged him to become a candidate for congress while he was a resident of New Albany, and he made the race against Kerr, the Dem ocratic candidate, afterward speaker of the house. Michael C. Kerr car ried the election by only 1.800 votes despite the fact that Judge Davis, the Democratic candidate in the previous election, had carried the district by three thousand votes. Narrowly Escapes Death. While Mr. Curry was making polit ical speeches In Indiana, the Knights !of the Golden Circle made two unsuc Icesful attempts to lynch him. It was i only by the Intervention of a Demo cratic hotel kspper in Orange county, near West Baden, that a dozen mask ed men were but to flight. Another time Mr. Curry was delivering a po litical speech at Leopold, near Evans vllle, when the knights of the Golden Circle threatened to kill him. Feder al officehs came to his rescue at that time and he narrowly escaped being captured. In 1869 Mr. Curry was elected di rector. of the southern Indiana prison at Jeffersonvllle and under his admin istration mechanical employment for convicts was Introduced In Indiana for the first time. Becomes Secretary of State. Two years later he was elected sec retary of state. It was Mr. Curry who made the first public report for a Gov ernor of Indiana. The stato officers were divided in politics when Mr. Cur ry took office in 1872 and the work accomplished during that administra tion was significant. The legislature in aJnuary, 1873. passed the first Indiana law for esti mating the valuation and taxing of corporations. The state officers made up a commission to assess the value of railroads and other companies op erating In the state and their wark was successful from every point of view. It was during the year that Governor Hendricks and his staff paid official visits to tht Governor of Illi nois and the legislature then in ses sion. Tbey afterwards called on Pres ident Ulysses S. Grant in Washington. During subsequent campaigns the Republican chairmei of a number of a number of atates solicited the ser vices of Mr. Curry ; as a platform speaker and he delivered tariff speeches In Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, South Dakota and other states. If a particular district was in doubt and the Republicans needed its vote they would send Mr. Curry to line up the voters. And he seldom failed. He appealed to the masses. Was an "Offensive Partisan." "My ambition waa never to bold of fice," explained Mr. Curry, in speak ing of the days when he took an ac tive part In state an national poli tics, "but It was to shape my language in such a way that every man could understand clearly what 1 waa aaying. I wanted to instruct and educate peo ple. That Is alL" Mr. Curry came to Washington in April, 1881. when he u appointed to fill a position in the pension bureau. Four years later, when President Cleveland took office be waa let out for "offensive partisan sal p." When he was told why he would lose his posi tion. Mr. Curry aald: llr. Cleveland Is right. My partisanship is alwaya offensive. Never defensive." In 1007 Mr. Curry waa returned to the pension bureau and he haa aince held one of the most, responsible places in that department, "I was alwaya too muen of a politi cian to be a prcacber. an too much of a preacher to be a polltlcfcn," said Mr. Curry. J On next Sunday mornfcjg. Mr. Cur ry will deliver a sermon) at the Unl versallst church in Washington, of which he is a member. iS text will I bo "The Whole duty ot Mia to God. James Howarth, C. of W. feb 13-2t At Local Theaters' Spendthrift Here March 1. "The Spendthrift" which comes to the Gennett, Wednesday, March 1st, Is a pulsating vital drama of American life today. Its theme is extravagance. It is written by Porter Browne, an ob serving, skillful playwright who has just arrived at the height of his pow er, it emphasizes the almost criminal wastefullness which is characteristic of the dally lives of many persons men as well as women of a certain stratum of contemporary society. But the play is not a peachment. It teaches Its lesson In an attractive fashion. The strongest situations those which Impress an audience im mediately with their purpose and truth are developed in an atmos phere of high comedy. While "The Spendthrift" has aroused more ser ious discussion than any other play produced in "several years, there are 100 "laughs" in the first act.
