Hover's father is a professor in Posen. fWatlonal News Association) LONDON, Oft. 7. Arrangements have been made for furthering the project of a continuous and direct British railroad line from Ksypt to the Indian frontier by way of Northern Arabia and Central Persia, and im portant developments may be expected at any early date. The route has been well known for ft long time to Anglo-India travellers and geographical experts to be the shortest and most direct line of ac cess from the Mediterranean to the Westernmost frontier stations of In dia, but other projected lines travers ing foreign spheres of influence, have monopolized public attention, and the practicability of securing a railroad line to India which shall be exclusive ly under British control has been thus thrust out of sight. Another great advantage of the line referred to it that it will shorten the Journey to India by six whole days, a saving far greater (han could be ob tained by any other conceivable route. It starts from the northern end of the Suez canal at Port Said, and, running Of Akaba, El Jauf, Basra, Shiroz, Her man, Eastern Persia r.nd Seistan. will generally due east by way of the flulf close on to the present Indian rail road at Nushki. The entire length will be about 2,000 miles, while the sea route from Port Said to India is rough ly 3,050 miles, a sufficient indication of the saving in mere mileage, to say nothing of the greater speed of the train, as compared with the steamship. The existing maps of Arabia and Persia, especially the latter, are fairly good enough for a general alignment of the trend of the railroad to be trac ed, but to enable a satisfactory sur vey for railroad purposes a detailed examination of the route from end to end is necessary, and this is being ar ranged. The general subject will be brought forward in an exhausltve pa per to be read before the Royal Un ited Service institution in Whitehall at the opening meeting of the season, next week. Animosities in Ireland. The rancor of religious and politi cal animosities in Ireland has been greatly mitigated in the past dozen years. There la a growing recognition among men of all creeds and all par ties that they have interests in com mon as Irishmen, and that Ireland needs the servic of all her sons. It is true that political opinions still main ly follow the lines of religious belief, a Protestant, that is, is usually a Un ionist and a Roman Catholic is usually Home Ruler. But these old walls of sectarian partition are breaking down. Some of the staunchest Home Rul ers In Dublin are Protestants, who dismiss with scornful contempt the suggestion that there will be religious I 1 . 1 1 1 1 A. 1 jjereeuuuuu u iieiunu nua a native Parliment. There are too, not a few devout Catholics with anti-clerical pro clivities, who desire to prevent the in trusion of the spiritual arm into the secular domain. There is a genuine revival of inter est in the old native language. It is part of that natural renaissance, the workings of whose mighty spirit can be seen In many directions. Every street naraeplate in Dublin now bears the name In Irish as well as English letters, and Irish hsa been made a compulsory subject at the new Roman Catholic university. Yet I have dis covered singularly few signs of popu lar interest in the attempt to galvan ize the old language into new life. Among some scholarly patriots, who regard the native tongue as express ing the Ethos of the nation, there is an intense zeal for Irish, and that splendid Irishman, Dr. Douglas Hyde, has communicated his enthusiasm for the vernacular tongue to an ardent body of disciples. This revival of enthusiasm for the Irish language is a very significant pb- j of the national awakening. A musements practice of giving his Richmond pa trons only the best talent available, j Millie Clarke, the English Soprano ! making her first American tour will ; present an artistic vocal offering. The Liverpool news says of Miss Clarke: "A ducedly handsome and magnetic vocalist with a voice of excellent qual ity and perfect enunciation." Musart, comes billed as the double minded musical artist and is the only one in the world attempting this stunt "When A Woman Wills." The following is brief synopsis of "When A Woman Wills," which comes to the Gennett Monday, Oct. 9. The action of the play takes place in a mining-cattle country in New Mexico. The first scene disclosed is a typical western ranch house lonely surround ed by a dense forest. Here, the pro ducers are said to have excelled in lavish spectacular effects. Following this, this eye of the spectator rests on a real canvas painting of a massive snow capped mountain in the distance, the exterior of a mining shaft which hps been opened in the near proximity of the ranch house. The third acts exhibits the interior of a miners cabin. Next in order is a rapid change from the primitive to a modern sumptuous ly adorned drawing room. The play has to do with an irate bigoted parent, a gambler, yet who happens to be a man. In spite of his calling, a destitute girl and a husband seeking a kindly old maid who, with her idiosyncrasies, keeps the audience merrily chuckling all the while she is on the stage. Right dominates in the end and all terminates happily at the conclusion. which requires a complete division of the mind in the two extremes. His off ering is most unique, artistic and mu sical. Edgar Foreman & Co., present the j ability. The act contains many bright act and it will no doubt win popular high class singing playlet "A Duel of and witty lines and is ably enacted ! favor. Hearts." This play was written by Mr. j by a most excellent cast. There is t Summini up tne sno in genenu Foreman who is aplay-wright of some j plenty of good singing throughout the j looks to be a winner. t i i i I M U R R A-Y ' S wTsamois Arabs II r;i AT 1 w 1EJ WEEK OCTOBER 9 Seven SdlUUlS rtl dUS EVEN I N GS 10-25cts "Baby Mine."
