(National Nawa Association) NEW YORK, Feb. 23. With eight babies dead and four dying at the nursery and infant'a nome. 396 Her kimer atreet, Brookly, detectives who are probing the case declared that they ware certain the little victims had ben poisoned. Meantime, a uniformed policeman is on guard in one of the rooms at the home, with Instructions to "keep an eye on" a suspect. Chemical analysis is now being made of the contents of the stomachs of two of the dead infants to deter mine the poison that killed them. Coro ners Physician Wuest who conducted the autopsies on two bodies says that the babies were killed by an' Irritant poison but he could not determine its exact nature. CALLS FOR AID BY THE POOR ANSWERED Many calls for help are being receiv ed from the poor of the city by the sal vation army following the recent cold bpell, and ai far ai possible are being attended to. Capt. Deuter praised the manner in which the citizens of Rich raond had answered the calls for help, and stated that although this had been tb hardest winter of years on the poor, the army had been very success ful in helping out deserving cases call ed to its attention. Township trustee Howard reports many calls for help moat of which were given attention. In one case a woman asked for coal but wanted it delivered after dark, as "the neighbors am always sticking their noses in her business." Her request was not granted. (National News Association) OKLAHOMA CITY, Feb. 23 The Oklahoma Democratic state conven tion after an all night session at 3 o'clock this morning adopted the reso lution of "Alkali Bill" Murray, the Wil son floor leader, providing for a dele gation to the Baltimore convention di vided equally between Clark and Wil- ron, each half to go to the other candi date when it becomes known there is nn hope of nominating that candidate. The convention then adjourned until 10 o'clock. The convention was the final test of strength between the various presiden ilnl candidates In this state. The fight was waged to send the delegation as a unit for one man precipitated one of the hardest political fights in the his tory of the state. ' The Wilson men had won irst blood when they jammed through a resolu tion that committee representation hhould be made from judicial districts instead of from counties. Judge Thomas Doyle, who presided as temporary chairman could not. make himself beard above the distrac tion that accompanied the greater part of the night's proceedings. Following the report of the creden tials committee at midnight pandemo nium broke out over the seating of del egates whose legality was in question. Gov, Cruice, alarmed at the uproar which threatened to wreck the hall, suggested a compromise through in dorsement of Gov. Marshall, of Indi ana, but this suggestion was howled down. Many delegates left the hall and snatched an hour or two of sleep ntd returned to re-enter the fight. RICHMOND BOY SAW A CHINESE BATTLE Atrocities perpetrated by the victori ous Chinese rebels after the six day's battle at Nanking in January, are told in a letter written by Will Fosdick to a cousin, Mrs. Charles Pitman, of this city. The writer, who is master gun ner on the U. S. destroyer Bainbridge, was stationed just out of range during the six days' battle, and said in the letter that the cruelties were terrible. After fighting for three days, the vic torious rebels would lead down to the sea wall along the river Manchua in squads, and, making them mount on top of the sea wall, cut off their heads, and tumble the bodies into the river. He enclosed Bome cards, showing "the burning of cities, and one card, with j a picture of a portion of the Manchu : lines after the battle of Nanking, ' where the wounded and dead laid for days without attention or burial. An appeal for aid was made to the government today by planters who are apprehensive that Col. Arenda, leader of the radicals of the Veterans association, will carry out his threat to precipitate a reign of terror tomorrow. The time given to the government for the expulsion of Guerrillas from government service will expire tomorrow, and civil service will be restorea. The agitators in a manifesto today declared that ropes had been prepared to swing judges if the demands of the veterans are not heeded. Cigar makers are urging a general strike. Lured from his comfortable home in i Dayton by the fascination of the race track, and taken with a string of fast horses all over central Indiana, Wil-1 iam Simpson, 72, an aged colored man who walked from Indianapolis to this city, was stranded here yesterday. He wanted to go back home. He told township trustee Howarth that he had lived here all his life and wanted to go to the poor house. Howarth did not believe his story and took him to the police station where Chief of Police Gormon took him to task. Ho admitted that he had been here only one day, but pleaded that he wanted to go home or get some place to stay and thought himself jus tified in telling an untruth. Howarth refused to give him trans portation but offered to send him to Eaton. The old man demurred, but upon listening to another lecture con sented to go that far at the expense of the tax payers of this county. City Statistics Uoitfon Magaw, a sophomore in the high school; was suspended for the remainder of the year this morning, when found earing a iraternity em blem on his watch fob. Principal Neff learned early this morning that Ma gaw had been wearing the fraternity insignia in violation of the state law. Later in the morning, he saw the young pupil with the forbidden fob, and immediately ordered him out of school for the rest of the year. Magaw is a member of the Beta Phi Sigma fra ternity. Wray Draper, former president of student government, and a prominent leader of school activities, was sus pended Wednesday for violation of the anti-fraternity ruling. The scholars in the high school are quite excited over the activity of the teachers in enforcing the new ruling. Births. The Navy league of the United States, in annual ( convention in this city, held a "peace" session this afternoon with a view to impressing upon the public mind jts belief that "an adequate navy is the only guarantee of peace." President Taft delivered the principal address at the session, which was held in Con tinental Memorial Hall. The other notable speakers included Rear Ad miral Richard Wainwright and Charles Francis Adams of Boston. EIGHT BODIES ARE TAKEN FROM MINE APPOINTMENT OF A RECEIVER IS ASKED (National News Association) PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Feb. 23. Ap plication by stockholders was filed to day for appointment of a receiver for the International Lumber and Develop ment company, capitalized at $6,000, 000, on the grounds that the company was organized to defraud the public. At the offices of the state mine inspector this morning it was stated that eight dead bodies and one living miner had been taken from the coal mine at Le high, and that only one other man is left in the mine. PREPARE 2 REPORTS The public service corporations com mittee of the Commercial Club formu lated a report on the gas franchise and r ity street cars, at its meeting last ev ening. The report on street cars, which wiP be presented at the March meet ins of the board of directors, a week from next Monday, is understood to advocate strongly that the club take steps to secure better city cars for Richmond. The committee on insurance will p,eet at the club rooms this evening tc prepare a report for the directors on the subject of local fire insurance rates.
