He will not be undersold. - JC(T Almost every succeeding day brings something n;w and strange to our piiet little village. We have passod through a series of surprises for the Iat two months, every week giving birth to some new and startling occurrence; but this week has carried off the palm, and left us in greater astonishment than ever. It is no llailroa l, Turnpike or Whisky excite ment; but it has all been caused by the arrival of a large number of iJoxr.s and IJw.r.s at our freight Depot, which have caused no small amount of trou ble to our Dnun.eu to deposit safely in the possesion of I-'i tzpatiiu k A: 1'iMii.u. I'poa examination, they were found to contain a very heavy stock of Stah.i: and Famt dry good. That they are of superior quality and style, we shall only offer this one fact in proof: since they have been o fie red for sale, in order that all the ladies might obtain a position at the counter, crinoline has suffered no ordinary condensation. A Sickles Trasnly in .Mmlifcon. The Times, of yesterday afternoon, states on the authority of a gentleman from Madison, Ind., that the inhabi tants of that city were thrown into a state of excitement by a lamentable affair occurring on Saturday night last. It appears that for some time past a citizen engaged in the saddlery busi ness, has entertained suspicions of the virtue of his wife, and resolved to sat isfy himself in icgard to the matter. Accordingly on Saturday, he informed his family that he should leave in the evening for Cincinnati. About 11 o'clock, however, he returned unex pectedly to his home and found Irs worst fears realized. A neighbor of his who was possessed of considerable means was the intruder. The injured husband found the guilty couple in bed, and without an instant's delay, ho drew a revolver and shot the sedu cer dead. He then left the house and gave himself up to the authorities. Cin. Jazettc. . . iTiT A curious phenomenon was observed during the recent volcanic eruption at the Sandwich Islands. A correspondent of a California paper says: "Once, while standing on a rock with several others, perhaps two hundred feet from the stream, a loud, ringing noise was heard, as if the rock had been struck by an immense sledge hammer. We started, not knowing but Pelo was under and after us, but soon found our alarm groundless, though the noise was probably caused by the liquid lava running under the ground, and suddenly tilling up a cave beneath us. A little after a singular scene presented itself the appearance of a man sitting on a rock, and riding along on the top of the liery lava stream. So deceptive was this illu sion, that several of the party, when it was lirst observed, looked around to see if rne of their number had not, bv accident, got on the stream. The life like image moved slowly along, till suddenly his head tumbled off, and the whole image soon disappeared. Fo ' I-' ivc I'liina at j. !. A. Tin: Srr.rnr.Ns Wii t.-Poisomno Cam:. Thi great agony of the Steph ens wife-poisoning case, that has at tracted the attention of all Xew York during the last fortnight, is at length at an end. The jury brought in a ver dict of guity on Saturday last. The Xew Voik Kxpross relates the following incident as occurring at the close of the trial: 'His infant daughter, Pelli, had attended her father during the entire trial, and at its close; turned toward the prisoner, and. after kissing him, said: 4,Come, pa! Let us go, now. It is all over; see, pa! the people are going." Human nature could not stand this. The sheriif turned awav to hide a tear, and retired, leaving the prisoner alone with his relatives and compel. Pocket handkerchiefs were drawn out by many present, and the attempt of the male portion of the audience to stop up the outlets of the heart's fountains were of no avail." The Kx press says such an effecting scene has rarely been witnessed, and it is earnestly to be hoped that such may never again be seen in New oik. . A Viai. in mi: 1 1 i'.akt ok a Tuns.
