Cow Peas In Corn
t It is still early enough to sow
cow pens in corn The farther

1 havo no hesitancy in saying
that if equal facilities bo given
E corn and cow peas the climate beI
ing suitable for each tho peas will
on an average provo tho more valI
nablo crop A good crop of cow
peas will easily gather from the
nir 100 pounds of nitrogen perSI
acre which is i worth as a fer
tilizer about 15 cents a pound
Consequently when tho vines are
turned under they will carry with
them about f15 worth of nitrogen
per acre to bo drawn on by the
next crop From 550 to 50 bushels
of shelled peas per acre can easily
ho grown worth say 50 cents a
bushel th1Y are now worth 150
Wo thus have a total of 30 per

corn crop of tho United States will
average I

which aro not taken into account
LPeas
1 Peas drilled midway between
wide corn rows can be successfully
J grown with at most but little dej
trimont to the corn Some argue
that peas by shading the ground
are an advantage to corn
When peas aro planted as late
as they willmature they do their
principal growing after the corn
has gono in decline Thorefortj
very nearly a full crop of each can
bo grown For a joint crop of corn
and cow peas the peas may be

In a climato where cow pea
will flourish a row of corn should
never bo planted without making
i proper provisions for peas also
This provision means drilling and
thorough cultivation The cow pea
is too important a crop to broad
cast and leave to take its chance
with grass and weeds A ranki

phoric acid and potash in proper
quantities
After one deep plowing culti
vators may bo principally employ
od for the corn A strip about aj
foot broad midway between the
corn rows is preferably plowed
deep each time up to the time the
peas aro planted A loose bed w thel 1
thus be prepared for the peas It
pays well to plow deep even to

Cultivation should bo continued I
as long as tho pea vines will per
