We. 3 Tb. 4 II 1 8 5 6 10 1 7 24 7 HE desperate situation of Democracy is evidenced by thowhen reports from Washington to the effect that Senator Gorman is be ing groomed as a compromise candidate upon whom both the Parker and the Hearst factions may unite.-No man-has~~shown so fixedly opposed to the great policies which the people of the nation have determined to carry out as has Senator Gorman. AMID the multitude of the candidates for railway andware-_ house commissioner none will be stronger in the ninth congres sional district than Ezra G. Val entine, of Breckenridge. Mr. Valentine's boom made great progress some months ago in the north country newspaper and if he goes after the place in earn est he will prove a very formible candidate. SOMEHOW BITS FROM THE Fr. The former rate is so low that it is claimed, that good men cannot be secured especially in those districts where it is most desired to establish the ser vice as an aid to the settlement and development of the country. The smallness of the salary has led the carrier to carry on a private express and messenger business of his own to eke outof his income. This scheme has been warmly commended but it "works in a peculiar manner In thickly settled communities it pays the carrier a good revenue while in thinly settled districts the carrier is but little helped. Consequently the plan is not an equitable solution of the problem of the carrier's salary. It is also claimed that the car rier, hired by the public, is thus made a com$&1iiitti 'ol the public. Se*can be secured to carry par cels for less than postal rates and the postoihee department is thus the loser. Both these considerations would seem to make it desirable that the carrier be paid a stated salary sufficient for a living wage and that he be not allowed to mix his private business with his public duties. all rumors of Japan ese reverses prove to be far otherwise. The play presented on the opening night is one of exceptional interests from the fact that in the role of Florence Grantley, Miss Ober is reviving the part that was in quite a mea sure responsible for being eleva ted to the stellar honors by Man ager Ettmger and moreover from the fact that the play itself is one the brightest and cleverest given to the public. In the revival of this highly successful piece Mr. Ettinger has provided a -very strong supporting cast.including such well known players as Mr. Bruce Deiamater, one of the cleverest young leading men 'on the stage, having been in support of the well known actress, Mrs. Fitz Allan, formerly leading woman for Salvenia & Keen. Mr. T. B. Hitch, a BjfMJ&bftT of the comrjajciy-, was featured for VvVo seasons in a southern tour of Dr. Jekyl and M. Hyde. He was also leading feature with the great Norwegian play "Thelma." Other members of the cast are rant Mallory, Corinne Curtiss, Grace McDowell, J. C. Crippen, Edgar Patterson and Harry Langdon. SOCIAL EVENTS The Saturday Night club gave a very enjoyable dancing party at Peterson's hall Saturday night. Dancing began early and con tinued until after 11 o'clock, refreshments were served and the party broke up. Mrs. J. P. Young was very pleasantly surprised by quite a large party of friends last Satur day night on the occasion of her birthday^ ^jV_tjeJighiiuJsocial "evenhag was spent. Mrs. Young was remembered with a number of very handsome presents and the occasion was a very enjoyable one. Most people liave an idea that rheumatism is contracted like a cold, that the damp, chilly air penetrates the muscles and joints and causes the terrible aches and pains, or that it is something like a skin disease to be rubbed away with lini- ment or drawn out with plasters but Rhuematism originates in the blood and is caused by Urea, or Uric Acid, an irritating, corroding poison that settles in mus- cles, joints and nerves, producing inflammation and soreness and the sharp, cutting pains peculiar to tWadistressing disease.
